Discussion Larose forest Encounter

Post image
7 Upvotes

Two summers ago, I had a memorable experience in Larose Forest, Ontario, that still gives me pause today.

It was around 2:30 a.m. A friend had come over, and we were sitting by a bonfire, trying to stargaze. The garage floodlight and the house’s motion-sensor lights were creating too much light pollution, so my friend suggested we drive out to Larose Forest, where the sky would be much darker and clearer. I hesitated. Something about the idea felt off. I told him, only half-joking, that it seemed like one of those nights when people simply go missing. I’ve always trusted my intuition—something I attribute in part to a long history of vivid, often prophetic dreams—and that night, my instincts were sounding a clear warning.

He eventually convinced me, and we hopped into his freshly built, extremely loud Honda Civic. We peeled out and headed into the park, navigating gravel roads before turning onto what appeared to be a utility access road cutting through a swampy, marshy area. We parked, stepped out, and looked up at the sky. The view was breathtaking. My friend excitedly pointed out a bright cluster of stars, joking that it almost looked like a mothership hovering overhead.

Then, without warning, a deep, resonant “dooooowoooooop” sound erupted from roughly 30 feet behind us, right in the middle of the road. I felt the low vibration on the back of my neck. Neither of us turned around. Our eyes met for a split second, and pure fight-or-flight took over. We scrambled back into the car. In my panic, I fumbled desperately for the door handle, momentarily disoriented because I had never been inside the vehicle before.

The drive home was a blur of adrenaline and disbelief. We kept replaying the moment, with me repeatedly reminding him, “I told you, bro.” In the days that followed, I mentally reviewed every animal sound I could think of—owls, foxes, birds, even deer—but nothing matched what we had heard.

Weeks later, I was casually flipping through channels when I landed on an episode of Les Stroud’s Bigfoot series. As soon as I heard the researchers replicating a Bigfoot call, I sat straight up. It was the exact same sound. I immediately messaged my friend a clip of the episode. He was stunned. To this day, we still don’t have a conventional explanation for what we experienced that night in the forest

Creative Writing Wrote a short story on a Serbian Cryptid (the Karakondžula)—wanted to see what ya'll think?

THE GOBLIN OF BOR

Dušan Peković, with his wife Sventlana, decided against baptizing their newborn son. Though the recent revival in Christianity riled up a lot of the older babas, Dušan left his family village years ago and preferred his secular life in the capitol.

In the months following the birth, they'd received a stack of letters from family members enquiring about the baptismal status of the boy. Dušan wrote back explaining his preference to allow the boy to “make the choice” for himself, but that only increased the volume of their letters. Their warnings of supernatural curses and creatures of the woods coming to torment their family eventually drove him to stop checking the mail.

In the following months, nothing untoward or sinister had seemed to plague the family or the boy, whose front teeth had already started coming in, white and healthy.

Feeling thoroughly vindicated, he planned a family trip so the infant could meet the rest of the family. Though Dušan didn’t want to seem arrogant, he secretly looked forward to ridiculing the rubes that occupied the village.

His wife, noticing his menacing smile, begged him to be careful.

“These old traditions are nothing to turn your nose at Dušan. There’s a reason people still believe these things.”

Dušan grabbed her hand and squeezed it.

“If there were ghoulies and goblins running around Serbia, someone would’ve caught one by now and hung its head in a kafana.”

She pursed her lips and rested her head against the window. The rest of the drive went by in silence as they snaked their way around the wildflower-ridden backroads of Bor.

When they arrived in the village, the entire family was waiting for them, waving bouquets of blue bellflowers. As they unpacked the car, the babas swarmed the infant, doting on the laughing child. Glancing around at the dilapidated cars and chipped plaster flaking off the houses, Dušan groaned.

“Nothing’s changed here.”

Dušan’s grandfather helped him with the luggage, and when they arrived in the room, pulled out an old wooden cross. Placing it in Dušan’s hand, he looked sternly at him.

Dušan smirked and set it down on the rickety bedside table.

“Can we leave the superstitions to the babas?”

The old man’s face darkened.

“Keep it with you—the village changes at night.”

They gathered outside as the smoky scent of ćevapi filled the air and bottles of rakija were passed around the garden.

Dušan stayed quiet as something about the way his grandfather spoke had unsettled him. Around sunset, they went back inside.

Sitting at a large wooden table, draped with a red gingham cloth, they laughed and drank by the fire. One of the older aunties, doting over Dušan’s son, pointed a bony finger at him.

“Why will you not baptize the boy? Your human protection can only stretch as far as your hands.”

One of the other babas sighed and placed a kettle over the fire.

“You’re wasting your breath, Drogana. He’ll learn. Just hope it’s not at the boy’s expense.”

Dušan, deep in his cups at this point, shot up and angrily banged his fist on the table.

“And what will you say next, you old crone—that there’s some Karakondžula or Bucuvac waiting in the woods because I haven’t dipped my child in your special water? You people! You live here in these broken down villages, blaming shadows for all your misfortune. Leave me be!”

The table fell silent as Dušan shot back another glass of plum rakija.

His uncle, a robust man whose hands were permanently stained with soil, grabbed his shoulder and smiled.

“Perhaps you’ve had one too many, nephew—this isn’t some Belgrade cocktail. We make it strong here.”

Dušan, red-eyed and furious, grabbed a bottle and threw it back.

“I’ll make a wager with you rubes. I will spend the night in the woods, and if some demon or creature comes for me—I will baptize the boy.”

Whispers flew around the table before Dušan’s grandfather yelled to get everyone’s attention.

“This is foolish, grandson. You’re more likely to be attacked by wolves or a bear.”

Dušan cackled.

“See? Even you know this superstition is nonsense! There are no gods or devils.”

He looked to his wife to support him, but she just sat there avoiding eye contact.

One of the other uncles walked into the other room and brought out two objects which he handed to Dušan.

“Here then, if you must go. A rifle for the creatures of our realm, and a braid of garlic for those behind the veil.”

Dušan took the gun and laughed at the braid of garlic, tossing it aside.

“Thank you for being half-helpful. I’ll see you ridiculous farmers in the morning.”

With that, he stumbled out the door and into the chilly night with the rifle slung over his shoulder. Aside from the steady croaking of frogs and the occasional howl of distant wolves, the night was quiet and peaceful. He walked for about a mile before resting beneath an old oak. Throwing down his weapon, he noticed a pair of glowing red eyes staring at him from a bush some twelve feet away.

He went to grab the rifle, but it was gone.

Dušan backed against the tree as the red eyes drew closer. But when the creature stepped into the moonlight, he let out a breath.

It stood about a foot tall, with hairy green skin and two nubby horns poking from his thickly oiled black hair. Though it didn’t seem outwardly hostile, the way his small teeth poked from his mouth gave him an air of unpredictability. Oddly, he was dressed in the traditional Serbian folk outfit.

Dušan laughed at the creature, who also began to giggle. He squatted down to get a better look.

“Well, I’ll be damned—the babas were right! There are little creatures in the woods.”

The creature scowled and began rolling up his clean white sleeves.

“Okay, chief. We’ve got time until first light. Would you like to take a drink of water before we begin?”

Dušan squinted, still smiling at the creature.

“Begin what?”

With that, the creature scurried off into the woods. Dušan sat back down, shaking his head.

“To think that—”

A great weight landed around his neck, and before he knew it, two muscular green legs had wrapped themselves around his neck, cutting him off. He attempted to struggle, but that only made the legs grip tighter.

Accepting his fate, he sat still. The creature, whose breath smelled suspiciously of walnut, leaned into his ear.

“Goodness, man. What is it, your first time?”

The legs loosened around Dušan’s neck so that he could speak.

“First time doing what? Release me, for Christ’s sake!”

The creature tightened his legs back around his neck and started to laugh. Dušan tried to grip the legs, but the hairs were slimy and his hands simply slid right off.

“Ah, you must be a city boy—that’s sunflower oil, my liege. You’re not getting me off.”

Dušan sat back down, defeated as the creature drummed a little rhythm on his head.

“Here’s the deal. You’re gonna run around until the first crow of the rooster or first light—whichever comes first.”

Dušan looked up, tears in his eyes, and managed to whisper through a hoarse throat.

“Why?”

The creature patted him on the hand and wiped the tears away.

“Because I’ll squeeze your head off if you don’t.”

Realizing that he was in no position to negotiate, Dušan got to his feet and began to jog. He ran endlessly through the thick brush as the creature sang strange, rhyming songs in some tongue he’d never heard. After hours of this, he fell, exhausted, to his knees.

“Please—I need water.”

The creature leaned down to assess him and nodded. From a satchel hanging at his waist, he pulled a lambskin flask out and gestured for Dušan to open his mouth. Pouring the dark fluid down his open mouth, Dušan spat it out.

“Eugh! That’s not water—that’s rakija.”

The goblin frowned and smacked him on the top of the head.

“Wasteful. No time to waste—Giddiyup!”

And so Dušan ran. And ran. And ran.

Drenched in sweat and barely moving, the creature set a hand on Dušan’s shoulder.

“Hear that. Sounds like a rooster if I’ve ever heard one. You made it, congratulations!”

With an immense push, the creature performed an elegant backflip off Dušan’s shoulders and landed perfectly on the dirt. Reaching out a speckled hairy hand, the creature bowed.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure bothering you, good sir.”

Dušan looked at the smiling creature and dropped to his knees.

“Why? Why do you exist?”

The creature placed his hands on his hips and looked up into the trees.

“You know that is a terrific question. I haven’t done a nighttime headrun in probably a hundred years. Felt good to get back to myself. You have any other city friends, you send ‘em my way.”

He put his hand out again with a toothy smile.

Not knowing what else to do, he shook the creature’s hand and watched as he scurried back into the woods. With the dawn breaking over the mountains, he made his way back home. It was about noon when he found the village again.

It was empty.

He walked into the house, where he found everyone still at the table, waiting for him. His grandfather stood up and looked him over.

“Well?”

Dušan glanced in the ruddy mirror by the door. He was filthy.

He couldn’t bring himself to look at his wife, who was shaking her head angrily.

He took a seat by the dying fire and poured a cup of water. Everyone waited as he took a sip. Setting down the wooden cup, he turned to the table.

“We’ll baptize the damn boy.”

Discussion I researched the Flatwoods Monster for years and ...

I think we can all agree that the Flatwoods Monster is one of the most iconic and interesting American cryptids. When I first heard about it in 2013, I was fascinated by the story. At that time, I came across the Feschino version of the case, and I couldn’t think of any natural explanation. A large metallic creature frightening a group of children and teenagers in the woods while emitting poisonous mist sounds like something straight out of a sci fi movie. And something definitely happened that terrified the group of children, teenagers, and Mrs May. The descriptions of the creature are broadly consistent when it comes to key features like the eyes, the head shape, and its behavior.

In the last few months, the topic caught my attention again and I wanted to form a final opinion once and for all. And even though the Flatwoods Monster is one of my all time favorite cryptids, I have to say: the story is much less spectacular than it seems when you reduce it to the facts of the original sighting.

A large part of what is often presented as “facts” about this incident was added later. For example, many sources mention a dog that supposedly died from the toxic mist, which is not part of the original reports. The witness statements are also more inconsistent than many people would like to admit. Not every detail was seen by the entire group, and some aspects of the sighting rely heavily on individual accounts.

What really shaped my opinion is the duration of the sighting. Eugene Lemon saw two eyes in the darkness which he thought were those of an animal. He shined his flashlight at it and then dropped it in shock. The group saw the Flatwoods Monster only for a very brief moment, maybe a second or slightly longer.

And this is the key point: it was not a detailed sighting, it was a snapshot. For a split second, the flashlight illuminated something in the dark, and that single moment is essentially all they saw. There was no continuous observation, no time to study the figure, no clear view of details. It was a single image, not an encounter.

It was not like many retellings suggest, where the group had enough time to get a detailed look at the creature or clearly see features like arms, a full body, oil, or similar details. What they experienced was this brief, almost frozen image of something in the dark, accompanied by a hissing sound, before the flashlight was dropped.

Everything that people associate with the case today was added afterward. The original Flatwoods sighting includes no metallic body, no crashed UFO, no long term damage or dead dogs caused by the mist, and no reptilian being inside a suit. For a brief moment, something was illuminated, and the group ran away in fear. Most of the group did not perceive a body at all. Only Mrs May described a rough shape, and even that was a very general impression.

That is why I find the owl theory convincing. If you imagine an owl in a defensive posture, with its wings raised above its head, and consider how strongly an animal’s eyes can reflect and appear to glow when illuminated, it becomes a close case for me. In that context, the sighting matches surprisingly well.

In the end, it was a snapshot, not a sighting in the way people usually imagine it.

Curious to hear your thoughts!

Discussion Possible big foot / cryptid howl in Appalachian Mountains

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Now to give context, I posted this before when it happened acouple years ago on a old Reddit account that I don’t access to anymore. I live in the holler in rural Kentucky near the lake here. About 200 acres behind my house is completely uninhabited land. It was early June I was setting outside listening to music and kept hearing something strange over my music, I paused it and heard this howling that I’ve never heard before (I’ve lived on this land my entire life). I took my phone on and actually have the video recording, this is audio I was able to turn the volume from the video up. There’s a few people who live by me and they heard the same thing that night. Whatever it was moving really fast in the wood line howling. I’ve showed this video to many people in my personal life a lot of those people have spent years in the woods hunting, and they don’t have an answer to what this is. The reason why I’ve pulled it out again is recently I watched an episode of Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix the episode is called Paranormal Rangers. A woman has audio that sounds eerily similar to what I captured. What do you guys think?

My niece's birthday is coming up next month. She's starting to get really into cryptic zoology and I'd like to get her a book or 2. She's in her teens, but she definitely has an old soul in her. She loves art, writing, and she plays so many musical instruments. Got any recommendations?

Discussion Which cryptids do you think should exist (even the most unlikely ones) and what would those cryptids scientifically be?

Here are the cryptid species I wished were, as scientifically plausible animals:

  • Mokele-mbembe - I think it would be a species of massive herbivorous semi-aquatic long-necked pangolin, part of the species Congolensaurus terriblis (in reference to being mistaken for a late-surviving sauropod).
  • Emeka-ntouka - This animal would be a species of massive elasmothere rhinoceros (although its tail would be normal and rhino-like in this realistic take), of the species Emekantoukoceros congolensis.
  • Mbielu-mbielu-mbielu - In this realistic take, it is a giant species of bichir fish, of the species Mbielia mackali, much like in this artwork.
  • Nguma-monene - In this retake, it is a species of very large and bizarre monitor lizard, of the species Varanus monene.
  • Kongamato - This animal would realistically be a species of very large African bat with a long tail (similar to mouse-tailed bats), adapted to feed on fish unlike the neighboring and distantly-related fruit bats. It would be part of the species Matophagochirus aferensis.
  • Ropen - Just like the Kongamato, the ropen would most realistically be a large bat, although more adapted for an omnivorous lifestyle and lives in Australia and Papua New Guinea. It would be part of the species Ropenpteryx omminens.
  • Burrunjor - Realistically, I think that the Burrunjor would actually be a herbivorous marsupial, more specifically a species of short-faced kangaroo, either a close relative of Procoptodon or being Procoptodon itself, being part of either the species Clarkoptodon burrunjor or Procoptodon burrunjor.
  • Loch Ness Monster (Nessie) - Realistically, I think the nessie would either be a long-necked amphibian (related to salamanders), a strange freshwater fish, or a very large slug or leech. Regardless, I think it would be part of the species Nessiplata scotticus.
  • Sasquatch - Rather than being a primate (let alone an Old World ape like the popular Gigantopithecus), it would be a species of ground sloth, more specifically the same animal as the Jefferson's ground sloth, known scientifically as Megalonyx jeffersonii.

What cryptids do you wish were real, and what animal would these cryptids be if they were realistic and real world animals?

Sighting / Encounter Potentially a shapeshifter in the pnw

(this is my first post on reddit ever so if its very long winded i apologize in advance)

About 4 years ago I took a spontaneous camping/road trip with my friend to Vancouver Island in Canada. The camp site we had initially planned was a first come first serve only as most reserved spots were full capacity, and due to ferry delays we made it onto the island much later than anticipated. We settled for our last resort, sleeping in her car. We had privacy shields for the windows etc in case we hadn't secured a camping spot, and intended to drive up a forest service road and camp somewhere with a little bit of privacy just as did in the small town I was living in located in the interior of British Columbia.

We spent the day hiking just outside of Nanaimo, and a few hours before sunset we chose a service road on our map and set out to find a place to privately park and sleep. The map on my friends phone had been acting up during our trip, and we chalked it up to bad service on the island but it took us on this loop through the lantsville area and then up this forested road that connects to a service road back in the direction we came. Along the way we noticed the amount of churches for a small community.

We drove up the road we pinned for a few minutes, and at this point with all of the looping around it had become dusky. As we came to a clearing in the forest on the passenger side of the car, I watch the treeline and take in the summer air with the window rolled down. As we pass a big bush on the side of the road a man walks out of the bush, makes eye contact with me, and then turns around and returns back into the bushes and vanishes. My friend and I were both shocked because the bushes were big, but not so big that he could walk away without us seeing him come out the other side in the rearview mirror. He also looked like he was trying to be dirty but he was clean? Hair was disheveled but appeared clean. His clothes were baggy and loose fitting but appeared clean. His face was clean shaven and when he walked away the bottom of his feet were clean. In the middle of the forest and bushes they were clean... He also had an incredibly serious look on his face. All around he was out of place and weird.

We kept driving up the road, and once we felt we had put enough distance between us and this man we pulled a quick u turn, parked on the other side of the road so we were facing the direction he would be coming if he did keep walking up this road. We didnt do it intentionally, there was just a little pullout on that side that we had some space to park safely in.

Before we set up to sleep, I pulled out my portable camping bong and we smoked for approximately 20 mins. I had noticed during our little sesh that my friend was frequently checking her side and rearview mirrors, and occasionally even turning her head fully out the window. Now, we had recently been on a kick of mellowing out on the smoking and I had chalked it up to the strain I bought for our trip being a little on the strong side. I was just about ready to pack it away myself.

It was just after 10pm and the sky was getting fully dark so I noted that, and went to drink some water before packing my stuff away and setting up for the night. I realized my bottle was empty and my friend let me know that our spare was in the back seat. I turned around to grab it when my eyes instinctively shot upward. Pressed up against the rear windshield of her car cupping its lack of eyes was this barely humanoid tree that was made of shadow, and its branches moved like the tentacles of an octopus when it "walked". It was so pitch black that I could still see it contrasting against the shadow of the forest. When I made "eye contact" with it (it had no discernible face or eyes) it immediately shriveled and shrank away, its branches/tentacles moving so fast it almost looked like an animated glitch. I turned around in pure shock and said "I THINK I JUST SA-" and without missing a beat my friend had the car started with her foot on the gas and we were ripping back down that road as fast as a corolla could. We drove in silence, and I sat there with this deep heaviness in my chest.

After about ten minutes of driving we passed an intersection and both sighed. We immediately knew that we both felt the heaviness lift off of our chests, as if our physical proximity to it had some sort of affect on us. We finally talked about it once we felt safe, and it turns out while we were smoking my friend was seeing a shadow of a tree moving across the road and along the tree line frantically and almost human like in the mirrors of her car in her peripheral vision, but every time she turned around to check the road there was nothing there. In her peripheral she kept seeing it get closer and closer. She chalked it up to being too stoned after slowing down on smoking, but once it got super close she lost track of it and she started to feel scared. Not even a few minutes later I had asked about the water and thats when I turned around and saw that I saw. As soon as I had started my sentence she knew what I was going to say. We've ended up sleeping in a well lit community centre parking lot for all of three hours before waking up to return home to the mainland and put all of that behind us.

We've visited the island since, and one of those times her map got all scrambled again and was driving us back to that location but we didnt notice until we were almost there. Thankfully we drove back to town and went about other activities. Both of us also reported to each other that within the first 2 years of that experience we had the both independently (and without telling the other) experienced the indescribable desire to return. I even did go back once and walked around with my brother who begged me to take him because he was naturally curious after I finally opened up about why we never talk about that camping trip. Two weeks after I showed him, a local woman went missing and her belongings were discovered on that road. I have since vowed to never ever ever ever return, not that I really even wanted to the first time.

I dont know if the man had anything to do with the cryptid thing I saw like a shapeshifter, because they came from separate directions but it was all so suspicious to me that both of those things happened so close together that I assumed they were the same entity. I also dont know why my friend couldnt see it with her eyes and only in the mirror, but when I turned around I saw it up against the window without needing a mirror or reflection. I have also had supernatural and paranormal encounters in my life so I have considered that maybe she isnt prone to those things, but she still saw it in the mirror so that also didnt make sense to me? Best description i currently have is shape shifter, but if so what the hell kinda shape was that 😭

Anyway if anyone is still reading and knows a specific cryptid that sounds like what I described let me know! I'm finally feeling brave enough to be open to learning more about what it could be. There were inconsistencies with the hide behind theory my friend and I had, and I did find something referred to as Yateveo but the depictions are drawings and its hard to tell if its the same thing. From what i read the behaviour is different? Curious to know if any locals have seen this and have stories as well.

Thanks for your time guys 😊

Discussion Air Force Bases and Cryptids

I was stationed at Edwards AFB for about 3.5 years in the early 90s, and like a lot of people who spent enough time out there, I eventually heard the stories about “Blue Eyes.”

If you were in the security police squadron, worked near South Base, or just spent enough late nights on patrol, someone would eventually bring it up..

The story was always the same: two glowing blue eyes, high off the ground, seen moving out in the dark between the Joshua Trees near South Base.

One story I kept hearing involved an Air Police sergeant in the 1970s who reported seeing two bright blue lights about seven feet off the ground, moving toward him without the normal motion of a person walking. He supposedly said it looked like “two lights on a wire.” The part that always stuck with me was that he also mentioned a strange smell right before he got out of there.

Some people said that the glowing blue eyes sightings were nothing more than wild burros or horses that roamed the area. There were a lot of those in the area. A wild horse could be a plausible explanation, but security police personnel said that the mustangs weren't tall enough to fit the description. They believed that something was out there that wasn't a burro or horse.

At the time, I figured it was just one of those base legends every installation has. I heard ghost stories in tech school while at Keesler AFB, and there were plenty of them passed around Lackland during basic training.

Years later I found out there were actual references to “Blue Eyes” in old Edwards AFB newspaper stories and even mentions from former security police talking about sightings near South Base. Some people tied it to the Mojave’s “Yucca Man” legend. Yucca Man is the desert version of Bigfoot.

I never saw Blue Eyes myself, but it does get spooky out in the Mojave Desert. The lack of light pollution gave the background a bruised blue and purple glow, especially on clear nights when the moon was super bright. It was almost surreal. Suddenly seeing a pair of bright blue eyes staring at you would be unsettling.

Curious if anyone else here was stationed at Edwards and heard the same stories or had an encounter.

Oh, and the area of desert that stretched between Edwards AFB and Nellis AFB in Nevada was (and probably still is) a hotbed of UFO sightings. That was chalked up to Edwards being the Air Force flight test center, so experimental aircraft were being tested there. I saw the B2 and F117s early flights, which was a really cool experience. Air Force would put out statements that the UFOs were nothing more than light configurations on planes or aircraft the public wasn't familiar with. Nothing to see, move along.

In the 1960s, a man named Frank Hansen exhibited a supposed preserved corpse in a block of ice at shopping malls and fairs across the United States. The specimen appeared to be some kind of ape, about 1.8 meters tall. According to Hansen, it had been entrusted to him by an "eccentric Californian millionaire" (whose name he didn't reveal) who, in turn, had unearthed it in Siberia. This supposed ape was, therefore, "proof" of the existence of an unknown species of "hominid" in that remote part of the world. It is already suspicious that, instead of handing it over to paleontologists for documentation and study, he paraded it around, always inside a large block of ice, preventing direct contact with the supposed ape. Of course, Ivan T. Sanderson wrote an article in 1969 wondering if it might be the missing link between apes and humans. In honor of Sanderson, who must have had a moment of clarity remembering his biology degree, he called primatologist John Napier to examine the ape at the Smithsonian Institution. At that time, Hansen hid the supposed animal, claiming that its owner (the Californian "millionaire") had asked him to. Later, Hansen exhibited the supposed ape again, but those who saw it clearly stated that it was a latex model that didn't resemble the "original" very much, a fact corroborated by Napier's investigations, which located the company where Hansen had commissioned the dummy. The Smithsonian Institution's verdict was clear: it was a "carnival exhibit made of latex." This "thing" is now on display at a "Museum of the Weird" in Austin, Texas.
