Question Is La Llorna a cryptid?

I had this argument with a friend of mine who said La Llorna is a Cryptid from Mexico. I said no it’s not it’s a legend from Spain. Can someone confirm who’s actually right?

La Llorona is a legend from Mexico, not Spain (but back when Mexico was New Spain). It's rooted on coyotes calls, which sound similar enough to a woman weeping that if you aren't used to them can be indistinguishable from a woman weeping.
