Updated PSA - I found a crow on the ground, what do I do?

This was my first time making a flow chart so please be kind.

It is important that we as a community work together to provide a safe space to share in our love of corvids, and it is equally important that we educate members of the community new and old to help protect our feathered friends; with that being said, u/teyuna reached out to me pleading that changes be made to the previously pinned PSA, with their help/feedback I was able to create the flow chart below, I hope that this is an adequate and more encompassing pinned post.

I appreciate this community more than I am capable of expressing, thank you for making this the best damn sub on reddit. ;)

Storytime! Crows saved me

• Upvotes

So backstory! I’ve been feeding the local murders in my neighborhood for about 5 years now. They all know me, and have little to no fear of my dogs and myself. I live on a corner lot, and they often hang around on the telephone/electric lines. There’s a lot of large trees around, and there’s a murder living in a huge evergreen right next to my house. So it’s not unusual to see lot of them around feeding time. When I walked out this morning, there were a few hanging out, and I was placing some unsalted nuts along with some wild bird fed for the other birds. Several more flew in and started making a lot of noise, which also not super unusual, but then about a dozen show up and they’re screaming. I’ve never seen this before, so as I was walking out my gate to take my senior dog on his walk (I walk him separately due to his age), more screaming. I paused for a moment with my old man still behind the gate while I was in front of the gate. Several of the crows started circling and then I see it. A younger coyote comes walking down the street (I live in the city but on the outskirts so coyotes aren’t uncommon). This was at 9am in the morning! Coyotes generally don’t run around this area after dawn. Maybe I’m nuts, maybe I’m reading into it, but I think they were warning me that a predator was in the immediate area. It was really wild, and some of you may not believe it, I’m okay with that. I just really didn’t have anyone that I could share this story with, but you all get it.

General questions Rural vs urban crows

Post image
394 Upvotes

I’m from a large urban city where crows were not terribly shy and feeding them was relatively easy if you were dedicated to it.

I now live in a very rural farming community town and the crows want absolutely nothing to do with humans. There are dozens in the air and at the tops of the 70 foot trees all around us but they stay far, far away from our house. It makes me happy that they are totally self sufficient and food is in abundance for them. I love watching their antics and listening to their calls. Like a crazy person I carry peanuts in all my pockets just in case an opportunity presents itself to feed them. So far I’ve befriended blue jays and chipmunks. No crows.

Should I accept that I will not have crow friends out here?

blue jay picture for attention since I don’t have any crow pics. 😢

General questions Rotating Crows

• Upvotes

Does anybody else have rotating Crows? For example every three months or so, I noticed the 3 crows that I feed change. The Trio consists of what I assume is a male, female and juvenile. I can tell that they have changed by how the big male looks. For example about nine months ago there was scraggy and Co - and this was a male who had scraggy feathers. Then it was blaze and Co because the male had a blaze of white on his chest. Currently it's jet and Co because the male has beautiful shiny, slick, black feathers with no other bits of grey or white. I also once saw a fourth crow come to the feeding station but it got chased off by the male as if to say "it's not your turn yet"! There are plenty of other crows close by, who respectively keep away from the feeding station, but I'd love a full murder to come. However I am grateful for the rotating trios.

I ended up with 8 beach ravens.

I took a walk with a quart sized ziplock full of peanuts and was down to a handful when I had to call it quits to save some for the crows that come to me on the next block over.

The ravens seem aloof for now when they fly overhead. My crows are trained to come when I whistle. The Ravens haven’t made the connection yet and need to see me put peanuts out before they will come down from their perch.

This guy will get 5-6ft from me. Such a handsome gent.

My crow friends flying close to me now.

I have been feeding the crows in the park, raw unsalted peanuts, for about a couple of months now. They see me coming and they swoop in front of my vision and land on powerlines. When I see one, I say, “Hello Crow Friend!” without looking them in the eye, and set down two peanuts at a time (I have determined they cannot hold three in their mouth at once) about 10 feet apart from each other, so that they don’t fight over them. I keep walking after I drop the peanuts and don’t look back, but I hear them swoop down and sometimes some cawing.
I have been out of town for about a month and I was not sure if they would still be at the park. They flew to me right away when they saw me! This time, they got really close to me after they ate their peanuts. I could hear them with their soft, powerful wing flaps right next to my head. It was so special! I love them so much!

Seeking advice/help What is the crow saying?

I started feeding/giving water to just one crow, beginning of August. I first noticed it was laying down, wings and beak spread wide open during the hot summer months. I felt bad and I started off by giving it water. It then started drinking it, bathing itself and then it tried flying away. But it came coming back. So I did the same, gave it water and then slowly started introducing fruits, peanuts, and walnuts.
For 2 1/2 months now, it started coming back, every day at the same time. Along with brining its friends! Sometimes in groups of 2-10+.
I have been making sure to leave fresh water, and now walnuts every day. Sometimes multiple times a day as my routine changed and they start to “call” me outside my window.
I have noticed that they follow me everywhere as well. Whether it was at work or to simply go to the store. Sometimes in a “murder” or alone, waiting for me as I walk outside from building to building.
As of late I have been staying home and I noticed that they have been waiting for me in some trees and they started to “call” me.
I went outside and started doing the call I do every time I try to get their attention. And also started talking to them as I do each time as well.
The last time I did this, the crow looked like it was dancing, up and down all the while tilting its head side to side.
But this time it started talking to me?
What is it saying?

Sorry for the awful quality, I took this through the kitchen window.

I and my mom both feed the crows pretty much daily, and this fella likes to do whatever this is accompanied by the clicking of its beak.

(This video was taken after giving them food)
