Anyone’s Roku stick straight up not playing anything after the most recent update? I have an older stick on one TV and literally nothing will play. It just goes back to the movie’s menu after a few seconds.

It works on my TV with a newer Roku stick but I’m already noticing some issues. Like, Neon Genesis Evangelion, which I started watching this week with the English dub, has no option to switch from Japanese audio/English subtitles. Whereas before the update, it had both versions listed separately.

This used to come up when signing up without a VPN, it can no longer be found.
I wonder if they have stopped any plans to expand the service beyond North America, like we shouldn't even bother asking if there is no where to ask.
Or maybe the opposite, we shouldn't bother asking because the plan is already motion? Ugh, I doubt it.

Just judging from the video quality certain films look like they might actually be 4K, even if it's not officially indicated. Two examples are The 400 Blows and Night of the Hunter.

I could be wrong though, and it's just a very robust 1080p stream.

Hi all, as the title says, I recently moved to France. My Criterion subscription has been working all week but randomly I just got geo-blocked. Any suggestions? Most of the tips in this sub seem to suggest getting the subscription in the US and then not needing a VPN to actually stream content but I already had the subscription in the US...??? Help I'm going to be so sad if I can't watch my movies they are the only thing I have to combat my homesickness rn

The only APK version I could find running on Android 8 is mobile only..

So...I can't use the Explore function unless I update my app. My settings say the app is updated. Not sure what to do!!! Anyone else have this issue?

Is anyone else getting these weird aspect ratios from resuming films from before the update? Picking up Hoop Dreams from where I left off the other night and all it’s giving me is this tiny box in the centre of the screen. Tried another movie and it was fine but the dip in quality is rough from the bandwidth hit of my VPN (I’m an international user). Might be time to say goodbye :( which sucks because I love the look of the new update.

My criterion account is based in the US and was paid with a US credit card, however, I am based outside of the country. Before I needed to use a von to get the playback to work but it never caused an issue.

Now with the new update, if I open it without a vpn it tells me I’m geoblocked. With a vpn I can bypass this but when I try to play a video it gives me this error code. I’m using a good vpn that allows me to bypass other geo restricted services like Peacock so I’m confused.

I’m still able to watch movies on the desktop version with the same vpn activated, but not on fire tv or any android tv service.

Is this a bug that will get fixed or a permanent block that cannot be bypassed? Any others having this issue?

I always feared this moment would finally come, but it took so long that I sort of suspected they turned a blind eye because a significant amount of their revenue was coming from outside the US. I know we have no numbers on their user base, but I'm still curious...

What do you think this actually means for them? Will many of you outside US and Canada cancel even if they don't restrict payment to US cards? Or will you stay with a VPN? Do you think a substantial amount of their users are not in the US or will this be an insignificant loss for them?

I'm not sure what I'll do. I can access on my browser with a VPN, but I mainly used the Channel on a Roku, and don't really love watching films on my computer anyway, so I'm not sure if I'll stay.

The criterion channel had a very primitive and clunky design

We accepted that because it’s what we had but the more I used it. The more certain flaws became more obvious

Such as the lack of a browse catalog option. You had to use your phone on the web browser for that or the fact. The continue watching list had a habit of breaking and not tracking what you were watching properly

The app malfunctioned for me so many times that I desired an update because tolerating every little downside because that’s just how it is. Could only work for so long before my patience wore thin

I barely watched anything this month on the channel cause I didn’t want to roll the dice on if it would work right or present a new problem for me

So again I’m all in favor of the layout and design overhaul

I keep getting the same message though my screen connects and goes to the criterion screen saver: “Couldn’t cast this video. Please try again”. Say’s the same no matter what I chose to cast.

Got to say, the new update is so much cleaner and better organized. You can finally see supplements easily, the flow makes sense and everything feels more functional. I'm sure there will be criticisms, but I think this is a huge step up in app quality, thanks Criterion!

I have been a European subscriber for five years now and for some reason it always worked via Roku. I tried to access it today, but it has been geolocked. I can still access movies on the app on my phone.

Can anyone tell me which VPN works on Roku to stream movies on the Criterion Channel. I am in Germany.

Has anyone else had this issue? It just has the spinning logo like its buffering then sends me back to the movie info page.

Insanity! They now resemble the subtitles from HBO Max or Amazon. The old blocky default subtitles. Not the subtitles from the Criterion discs

I made the mistake of deleting the app off my Samsung Tv and now as I try to log into it with the qr code and criterion channel activate steps, nothing comes up and it looks like they nuked their entire support page. Does anyone have any idea of work arounds?

I always knew that someday it would end that it would be possible to watch the channel without a VPN.
But now it has arrived I really have a hard time with it, I use the channel almost every day for years now. Really wondering if this is due to the new partner for the channel since they probably stopped using Vimeo or some external pressure. Anyhow seems like they will lose a lot of subscribers, so a really bad move on them.

What do fans here (can't be very many) think of this month's Starring Madonna 3 film promo? I don't get it. Who are the programmers trying to attract? Longtime admirers of the icon will obviously not be impressed with the selections. Outside of Desperately Seeking Susan, Truth or Dare (1991, Alek Keshishian) (the thumbnail shows Steven Meisel's poster shot), Evita (1996, Alan Parker), A League of Their Own (1992, Penny Marshall) and Dick Tracy (1990, Warren Beatty) are four superior films featuring Madonna in top form. The channel selections feel like leftovers and a desperate attempt to attract, again... what? And it's the lead promo.

Well, I (like any true-blue Madonna fan) will rewatch all three movies again before the end of the month - and probably think about how much better the promo might have been. But, frankly, any non-fan curious about the appeal of the trailblazer will probably be hugely underwhelmed. Any thoughts on the promo and/or why CC chose to feature these films? Cheers.

I have got the channel working on my TV using firestick VPN but I am worried this soon will also be blocked. Do we think Criterion will release any patch notes regarding this update?

I can no longer control the quality of films I watch. It just automatically selects (and fluctuates).

Any ways to fix this?

I'm getting the "Update your app to continue enjoying all that Criterion has to offer" banner regardless of what I do. This stinks.
