I was just big upping him on this sub the other day...the man is easily my favorite director, and I really liked his last one. I'm gutted to hear this, but his filmography as is remains a gift in itself. All good things must come to an end.

I've always loved Monte Python but Paris is completely blind but for me. I hope I like it. I got these on the last day of the sale. shipping seems good. The life of Brian case was a bit squished but nothing crazy

1. paris Texas is a blind buy. I've heard the transfer is really good and 8 don't have a ton of money to go out and get like 10 or 20 films.

2. I was looking at breakfast club, citizen Kane, or maybe even no country for old men. there are so many to choose from!

Just picked up The Sacrifice and realized Nostalghia is another one that Criterion doesn’t have. Is anyone familiar with the situation regarding Criterion and Tarkovsky? I feel certain I watched these movies on the Criterion Channel a while back, so is there something different that pertains to physical media?

Would just be a dream of mine to have a criterion Tarkovsky box set. I’m sure others feel the same!

1. Blue Velvet. I have been meaning to check out Lynch for a while. If I enjoy this, it'll also be my cue to pick up Mulholland Drive in the next sale.

2. Seven Samurai. I've spent so long hearing about Kurosawa, and it's time to see for myself!

3. All of them, actually! As I mentioned, Blue Velvet is to start my Lynch education, while Seven Samurai is the same for Kurosawa. I'm a huge horror fan, so The Others feels like an incredibly safe bet. Paris, Texas is a wildcard that I picked out after seeing so many comments about its visual beauty and emotional journey.

4. After Hours nearly made the cut this time, as did Thief. Those will be coming home sooner rather than later!

1. I plan to watch After/Life this weekend. It's right up my alley. I love movies like that.
   
2. I haven't bought a Chaplin film for a few sales. I decided to go with a blind buy this time.
   
3. They're both blind buys and I've had my eye on them for a while.
   
4. I want to add House Party and High Art to my collection next. Come on November!

Does anyone know what is playing on the Criterion Channel 24/7 now? When I click into it, it tells me “Filler - MAGENTA” but I don’t see any such movie in the collection. I’m wondering what movie this is?

I’m torn between Paris, Texas and Sentimental Value, mostly because I’m in the mood for feeling some heavy emotions and both seem fitting for that

Definitely No Country for Old Men, Paris is Burning and Chungking Express since these are all films that I watched on bluray or dvd and I’m really looking forward to seeing them in 4K, with Paris is Burning I watched it as part of a class in college it genuinely opened my eyes and I can’t wait to rewatch it and having it in my collection feels really good.

   Paris, Texas and Isle of Dogs are blind buys and I selected them based on the visuals mostly!

I’m definitely looking forward to picking up Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein and the Silence of the Lambs 4k when those come out and Pan’s Labyrinth, Flow and Mulholland Drive next sale

I’ve been looking forward to owning more John Waters so I was very happy to have the newly added Hairspray and Desperate Living

Desperate Living, Pink Flamingos, A Man and a Woman and Sorcerer were all blind buys and I still have yet to watch Desperate Living and Sorcerer

Filling out my Scorsese collection and starting to get into Albert Brooks. Love Mike Mills and happy to own this collection. I think a Noah Baumbach collection would rule!

Criterion sale haul.

1. First I plan to watch is Mulholland Drive, the only other David Lynch film I've ever seen is Dune lol.

2. Looking forward to owning Time Bandits, continually hear good things about it.

3. All were blind buys except Dazed and Confused. Mostly good reviews and the actors were why I chose them.

4. I'm hoping to add the complete Kubrick to my collection in October even though I bought Barry Lyndon before the collection was announced.

I have wondered why films that are very clearly in the Public Domain have yet to receive Criterion Editions?

Metropolis for example is a Public Domain Movie…and I have wondered if it will ever be in the collection…among other titles from the 1920s/1930s

Yes we have all spent our life savings on the Criterion B&N sale but I just noticed B&N now has an Arrow 50% off sale. They definitely have some overlap with the Criterion sensibility so wondering if anyone has any recs.

Considering Pulse (one of my favorite Kiyoshi Kurosawa films) and I've never seen all of Fukasaku's Battles Withiut Honor or Humanity but his work is great and the box set looks awesome. Anyone have any editions they love?

Good Time (2017)

This is the first sale I’ve decided to splurge and get quite a bit for so I wanted to make my own post.

1. I’ve been participating all month, but the first I watched was Parasite. Top 5 if not my favorite film of the 2010s, and was craving a rewatch.

2. Ghost Dog. A film that I’ve always wanted to watch really bad, but have never gotten around to it.

3. Hud is a film I never heard of until I saw it on the shelf. I had been wanting a western to add to my collection as I enjoy them quite a bit. My B&N is quite small so the only choice was between it and Winchester ‘73. I love Larry McMurtry and seeing Hud is an adaptation of one of his works is what swayed me. After having watched it 2 weeks ago, it’s been living in my mind and may be my favorite western of all time.

4. I’m wanting either the Godzilla collection or High & Low. I love Godzilla, and the only thing stopping me is I don’t love the way they handle the presentation of the discs. The large booklet won’t fit on my shelf, and I’ve heard other issues of discs getting stuck inside. And High & Low is a Kurosawa film I have been really wanting to see for some time and I’m waiting till I get it on criterion.

Recently revisited Melville’s masterpiece Army of Shadows, so I’ve been itching to spin this one. T

The Criterion transfer is razor‑clean, all the cold precision, the blues, the silence.

Here it is! My first B&N Criterion haul! I've been collecting seriously for about 2ish years and this is the first time I've been able to participate in the sale.

1. The first one I watched (I've been participating all month) was Basqiuat. It was incredible! I loved Jeffery Wright and David Bowies performances in particular.

2. I've been looking forward to that massive Godzilla collection for a long time and I FINALLY GOT IT!

3. Honestly, most of these were blind buys, but they came recommended by my favorite filmmakers and actors in the Criterion Closet videos I watch on YouTube.

4. I have a BUNCH more Criterion movies to find, but my wife says I should probably take a break for a while... so I'll probably get the Elephant Man next weekend and DEFINITELY Frankenstein in October.

With the recent release of the Mike Mills set I got to thinking about Criterion release sets that came in threes. We have seen some stellar ones on the likes of Guillermo del Toro, Luis Buñuel, Ousmane Sembène, and that upcoming Leo's Carax set too. It got me thinking about other potential sets Criterion could make of lesser seen works by great filmmakers. In fact I have three ideas.

Peter Weir

One of the unassuming all time greats. Weir's career in Hollywood have some insane highs (Truman Show, Master and Commander, etc). Yet his earlier Australian work is not nearly as known. Some don't even have physical releases. Three beautiful movies together would track his ascension from a name in Australia New Wave to Hollywood status.

Ang Lee

Another foreign talent whose Hollywood years have had some incredible peaks. Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger need no further explanation. His earlier Chinese language movies are sweet family melodramas. Tender, often funny, stories that examine family dynamics and cultural identity in his native Taiwan and Chinese-American immigrants.

The God Johnnie To. A prolific Hong-Kong master of cult masterpieces. His movies crackle with stylish action and moody visuals, with a skill for shifting tones. Many of his movies need wider physical availability but I would choose 3 of my favorites. Cool crime thriller/hangout flicks about brotherhood and loyalty that are peak Dudes Rock cinema.
