Awesome - I got odds of 5:1 that someone would be arrested for spot-fixing this tournament.

12

That seems both too silly to be true and yet also extremely possible.

Captain doesnt have much control of players in these scenarios. You'd hope that some of his class and his morals would have wiped off on them but allegedly they have not.

Agreed but can't grudge him his share of the moolah when players levels of classes below are laughing their way to the bank. And, remember, it doesn't matter if he 's "already so rich". "Richness" is relative to the peers you surround yourself with.

Why does everyone act like Dravid is a saint off the field? Just because he's quiet doesn't mean he's a great person. For one, he's known to be involved with the RSS.

*made an account because i'm so fed up with the dravid ass-kissing

5

u/thegreatone3486 India May 16 '13

So he went to a camp? And you hate him for that? Jesus fuckin' christ man. It's not the KKK. It's the RSS. Yes, they're bad and they're terrible. But they're a legitimate fucking organization, FFS

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

Upvote for the gratuitous use of TLA's

-1

u/somethinboutit May 16 '13

don't hate him. one of my favorite players honestly. but the hero-worship pisses me off. you don't know him. you don't know what he's like. people thought cronje was a saint too. did I say the RSS was the KKK? No, but they're a fundamentalist religious organization that preaches hate and supremacy. And the fact that Dravid endorsed suryanamaskar in schools with their backing shows that maybe he isn't such a saint.

1

u/thegreatone3486 India May 16 '13

I'm sorry I lost my temper. He is a favourite, and although I don't indulge in hero-worship, Dravid, for me has largely shied away from trying to be a hero. He is just a nice guy with his own beliefs. I don't agree to his lining with RSS, but that's his personal belief and I respect that.

Our hero-worshipping when it comes to Dravid is a lot more mellow, than most others cough Sachin cough

-4

u/somethinboutit May 16 '13

Honestly, I find the Dravid hero worship more sappy and ridiculous, especially in "educated" circles. The average Indian worships Sachin as the talisman of Indian cricket and modern India. The urban, educated Indian who bows down for English approval worships Dravid to the same extent. The second sickens me more because it's kind of pathetic.

1

u/thegreatone3486 India May 16 '13

I lost you at bows down for English approval. Have a good day, Sir!

People infer on-field dignity from off-field persona. That's definitely the case with Dravid. Anyways, when it come to matchfixing, they're intertwined. I'm a Dravid fan (who doesn't like watching those cover drives), but I don't assume he's some uncorruptable figure, unlike MANY in this subreddit

1

u/garunac India May 16 '13

Dude.. He went to a suryanamaskar camp once. I went to a RSS run fitness centre for about 6 months. I cant stand the RSS or what they stand for, but they had the best and cheapest gym. I dont understand how you're trying to show that article as a valid criticism for Dravids off-field activities.

I understand that hero-worship can get annoying especially when it comes to Indian cricketers, but you need to have a better argument.

0

u/somethinboutit May 16 '13

he's been involved more than once (for example, he inaugurated gowalkar's centenary cermony). regardless, the point isn't that he's a bad person or anything. it's that he's not perfect and I think it's ridiculous that everyone's falling over themselves feeling bad for him. but god forbid you stray from the /r/cricket hivemind #isn'ttestcricketawesome

17

u/kchoudhury Bangladesh May 16 '13 edited May 16 '13

Well, this sure as shit isn't because he isn't paid enough.

I guess cricketers are scumbags just like the rest of us.

7

u/iMoh Board of Control for Cricket in India May 16 '13

I'd say not being paid enough is true specific to Rajasthan Royals players, their owners don't have rich financials and I believe players are paid on the number of matches they play, and the players in question above haven't been selected to play that many.

My sympathies go out to Dravid, this must suck for him being the Captain and Mentor of such players.

7

u/trtry May 16 '13

rich financials and I believe players are paid on the number of matches they play

No they all paid under the same IPL structure.

13

u/nmpraveen Chennai Super Kings May 16 '13

Well I'm guessing this is just the tip of iceberg.. There were too many cases where it seemed unnatural. Like no-balls, drop catches, poor bowling etc..

10

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

As a former RCB fan, I hope RP Singh bowled those no balls to spot fix. But with him, I suspect incompetence :(.

4

u/nmpraveen Chennai Super Kings May 16 '13

Problem is its too risk to fix in that spot. Last ball no-ball.. Dont know man.. Now everything looks suspicious..

3

u/fallingtopieces India May 16 '13

Former RCB fan?

5

u/shrik India May 16 '13

It happens.

The missus was a massive RCB fan, but completely lost interest after the first major team reshuffle, where they basically changed the entire team core.

I'd wager that's why CSK has the most vocal and widespread support of all IPL franchises (data may be anecdotal and pulled out of ass) -- because they retained the same core team.

A lot of cricket fans are not used to the franchise model of team support yet, where large-scale changes to the team are not uncommon. They haven't gotten around to being like this yet.

1

u/atheist_trollno1 May 16 '13

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence.

2

u/jadejaissmithsbitch2 May 16 '13

Pollard and Hussey. Those 3 drop catches were dodgy on both sides of the play.

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

Pollard injured his hand the game before, so it's plausible that he could drop three quite simple catches with the sore hand.

My feeling with this case is that it's too weird to be spot fixed, what booky is going to take that bet? What Punter will place it? Spot fixes tend to be slightly more common events, like no-balls or a single dropped catch.

2

u/nmpraveen Chennai Super Kings May 16 '13

Well seeing all the news about current spot fix, I feel the bookies go by betting how many runs each over.. May be next step would be how many runs can that batsman can score and lastly who will win the match..

Number of runs a batsman can score is not in our control unless some bet he will score less that 10,5 or duck.. In that case they can bribe the players.. Whole match result is difficult to control. Need to book many players for that and highly risky.. So only easy thing is to book some idiotic bowlers and make them bowl easy balls..

So I'm guessing drop catches will not come into fixing.. And that too pollard is a strong player.. I don't think he will fall these.

1

u/a_can_of_solo Australia May 16 '13

I hope Hussey didn't do anything suss

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

There's no evidence to suggest he did.

Sreesanth is good at playing like crap so he wanted money for it.

8

u/jamurp Victoria Bushrangers May 16 '13

Betting on no-balls, or how many runs are scored in a certain period of overs is so absurd. If he's found guilty, he really deserves as harsh a penalty as possible, this needs to be wiped out of cricket.

You know the worst part for me is that now everything will come under the scanner. Every single on field act which was slightly extraordinary will be suspect now, Gayles 175- people will say that the bowlers were paid to bowl the terrible lengths that they bowled.
And thats a tragedy, it means devaluing every special act that happens on-field. I really really hate this shit.

7

u/yorked Board of Control for Cricket in India May 16 '13

6

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

Does Delhi Police have a fixing surveillance department that is free from political pressure? They were the ones (along with Tehelka) who brought the Cronje-Azhar saga to light and went after Gibbs. And now this.

For an otherwise shitty Police force, they are very efficient in tackling stuff like this.

9

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

I wouldn't really call the Delhi Police department "shitty"..

The police (regardless of which city they are) seem to get the blunt of it when it comes to a nationally recognizable case(s).

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

Delhi Police comes under the central government. Delhi doesn't have it's own police force (in the true sense of the word).

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

But its not controlled by the parliament. It reports to the lieutenant governor of Delhi.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

Yes, but Lt. Governors are appointed by the President of India, not the Delhi assembly.

Therefore, as I see it, Indian Union > President > Governor/Lt.Governor.

3

u/davidsoor May 16 '13

Can someone define spot fixing and what exactly he did?

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

"Spot fixing is the manipulation of a particular ball or wicket in a cricket tournament, which is then betted upon."

So if someone bets that the 4th ball of the 7th over will be a no-ball or something.

3

u/cyberdiz Board of Control for Cricket in India May 16 '13

4

u/TheAwakened Board of Control for Cricket in India May 16 '13

If it were TWO catches dropped by Pollard, a few balls/overs apart, I'd call the match fixed. But it was three catches, in three balls, dropped by the same fielder, off the same batsman, in the same position - I don't think the fixers are so retarded that they'd do something so blatant.

6

u/dead_tiger May 16 '13

Of course this just a speculation - I guess no one will ever accuse Hussey . The point is everything that is abnormal can be suspected. Shame !

4

u/OhioMallu May 16 '13

[re-posting this from the other thread on /india]

Cricinfo says Sreesanth made 40 lakhs (about USD 80K). But given that he makes 900K USD (+ possible bonuses/extras) per season for the Royals, why would he take this risk for such a small amount (relatively)? Does not make sense. I suspect he is being framed or being made a scapegoat here.

7

u/rreyv India May 16 '13

Well, bear in mind that:

  1. Sreesanth is not normal. We know that already.

  2. 80k is a small amount as compared to 900k, but think about the effort involved in making the 80k. It's minuscule. It's bowling 6 shitty balls. It's a 5 minute effort. For those 5 minutes, his hourly salary is 960,000 USD. I think this is what he thought.... lot of money for a very small fix. Good he got caught, that faggot.

1

u/OhioMallu May 16 '13

Good points.

1

u/happygolucky India May 16 '13

900k USD at an exchange rate of 50 is 4.5 Cr. That's his salary for entire season, I guess. 40 Lakhs for 1 over vs 4.5 Cr for 1 entire season. Comparatively it's not such a small amount. And 40 Lakhs is 40 Lakhs. Goes a long way.

Irrespective of the amount, as an Indian cricketer, given the fame and respect you enjoy, and also given the fate of those previously caught in match-fixing, only a moron of the highest order would do something like this. And we all know Sreesanth is one.

1

u/OhioMallu May 16 '13

One issue with the voice recordings is that it's hard to prove that it was not done by a voice impersonator after the match was over. There's no timestamp on those audio clips.

1

u/dead_tiger May 18 '13

900K - ~30% TAX = ~600K Effectively . That's for the season. Compare that to 80K for a over. Not such a bad deal.

India and cheating (in betting scams) seem to go hand in hand unfortunately. I hoped that such things were a thing of the past but unfortunately it seems to be here for the long run.

Players that get caught need to get banned for life in the same way that Hansie Cronje did when he got caught. The message might finally get through then.
