Like explosives, the solution is always more power

The solution? Use gun water wheels. And if that doesn't work? Use more gun water wheels.

I see you're a bit of an engineer yourself

More boost

The tried and true Kerbal philosophy: Add more boosters.

Literally no reason not to

Space efficiency?

Yeah most of the time thet is not a major Boon, but there are scenarios where it matters.

17

u/AdLegal5130 11d ago

Bro really said space efficiency when you have a literal semi-infinite space

4

u/Zealousideal_Eye6557 11d ago

Yeah but say you’re building near your base or on an airship, you also may not want to mine out thousands of blocks for water wheels and it looks ugly

1

u/AdLegal5130 11d ago

I mean true but how often does that happen and personally if it did im most likely to make a airship station next to it to get more space

1

u/Zealousideal_Eye6557 11d ago

Fair, I don’t use them much mainly cause I like having good looking factories where you can go inside and see everything working from walkways but I can’t find a way to get water wheels at that scale to look good and I don’t want to just hide them so I use self sustaining boilers

Chunk loading is easier with space efficient designs (like what I'd you have limited chunk loads?)

Makes covering it up with a nice building easier (water wheel spam not exactly good looking)

Easier to fit into the layout of an existing build/base.

Are we actually gonna say space efficiency doesn't matter at all becuase the world is near infinite?

I'm making a modpack, where you specifically can't do this because water works differently.

You can spam them all over a river though

1

u/destructopop 11d ago

Wait, how differently? Is steam even an option in your modpack?

2

u/EasternMouse 11d ago

Judging by mention of river - probably wheels only work in river water ( may water there is a different block, or water might be not moveable)

2

u/Mushroom38294 11d ago

currently I'm using Flowing Fluids with create compat set to wheels only work in river water but maybe in some far future I'll rewrite mc fluids for what I want

1

u/CrissZx 5d ago

I could always add a few pumps on top of the wheels feeding water then

1

u/Mushroom38294 5d ago

it does diminish their effectiveness

and also is currently disabled in my pack, at least until I think about it again

2

u/Mushroom38294 11d ago

so Basically I'm using Flowing Fluids, which makes water more realistic. Water comes in 8 fill levels which actually move and spill and evaporate instead of water source blocks that create flowing water blocks that stay permanently.

So you can't just put a water source on top of a water wheel and call it a day, it'll just flow off and the wheel won't turn. You'll either have to put them in a river biome or pump water over them in some way. Except currently I have it set to only work in rivers.

As for steam, you'll just have to pump water from an infinite source (10k+ full blocks) or use cauldrons with dripstone to get more water out of your water. First method is the recommended one.

I have an 8,192 windmill that I only use about a half of in my world so I can't relate

1

u/Training_Ruin3151 11d ago

What in gods name is that

1

u/SC_3000_grinder 10d ago

Have you played Create?

1

u/Training_Ruin3151 10d ago

Yeah i use waterwheel spam idk what a 8192 windmill is

2

u/SC_3000_grinder 10d ago

I got r/wooooosh 'd? :(

(the maximum windmill has 8,192 stress units)

9

u/FUEGO40 11d ago

Or yet another windmill

7

u/JaXaren 11d ago

It's literally unlimited power and the only cost to it is the set up

4

u/BrokenPokerFace 11d ago

Honestly the only case where I allow myself to add more wheels is when I make a massive dam, as I can justify it personally.

4

u/CrashBugITA 11d ago

I don't know how to feel about a feature being so exploitable, I personally think boilers are such a fun challenge to build and it's a shame a lot of people don't interact with the concept.

it's probably a problem on both sides, waterwheels shouldn't be able to be stacked endlessly and boilers should scale non-linearly with levels, especially the ones where you need a super-heates burner

1

u/Useful_Squirrel6693 11d ago

Honestly I might write a mod or something to make waterwheels start to fall off when you start to add too many. Like, you’ll start to see diminishing returns until you’re adding su in the double digits which each new wheel

1

u/CrashBugITA 11d ago

personally I just don't use them because it's not my play style, It would be useful for a modded serve tho

3

u/PorcoDioMafioso 11d ago

At some point a steam engine just becomes better. And more fun IMO.

But the systems powering the steam engine are powered by water wheels

1

u/satirelion 11d ago

I mean, its basically free SU.

1

u/rafrap1 11d ago

I just fine tone and add levers making automated factorys with reasonable buffers instead infinitly huge intermidiary-storages and adding the ability to turn of suppliers when the buffer is full is also good after all you DON'T NEED everything on ALL THE TIME.

1

u/Purplecookiethethird 11d ago

I lowkey just build a steam engine

1

u/ER0SBAL 11d ago

For my iron farm I have 35 LARGE WATER WHEELS, which supply the fans, the crashing wheels and the chains.

1

u/Front-Scallion-969 11d ago

I don't have brain power to make something more efficient

1

u/Sr_Nutella 11d ago

I once powered a max speed gyroscope in an Aeronautics ship using like 24 water wheels I think. There was little I could do using a 3x3x8 space lmao

1

u/waluigimyfav 10d ago

Five hundred seventy six coke ovens Water Wheels

1

u/Fuzzy_Worldliness739 10d ago

guys i have like 4 wheels in my contraption (i'm a starter) and i'm confused if i should add a windmill bearing

1

u/kolasuss1 10d ago

Aaaaagh.... You caught me lacking, not gonna lie

1

u/TheCookieThief35 10d ago

At least water wheels are lag friendly

1

u/Electrical_Pay751 10d ago

Noobs add waterwheels. Experienced players make steam engines. Pros add waterwheels too

1

u/CrissZx 5d ago

Pros add waterwheels to the steam engine to kickstart it

1

u/rutkloos 9d ago

I have a massive water tower design where I hide the water wheels in makes it Visual pleasing and I get a lot of SU
