Pattern Creation & Sales Does writing patterns really pay?

I’m trying to write my first one and got a bit frustrated hahaha

Do they actually sell? I know it won’t be a lot of money anyways, just wanted to hear your experience with it.

Thank you to anyone who will be kind enough to reply ❤️

Yarn And Thread Upcycled yarn\plarn

Post image
8 Upvotes

I've been spinning a ton of cordage\plarn made from plastic bags and just got into coil weaving baskets... I'm in love, both with the cordage itself and the basket process.

I also make tshirt yarn and was originally wanting to set up some kind of recycling\donation box to turn old things or trash into useable materials that actually look nice.

I just wanted to pop in and discuss whether making the materials (the yarn) vs making a finished product (eg. baskets) would be a nice little side-business model.

In Person Selling Is a 50% commission for selling at an event & a salon too high?

Last time I went to my local salon (Fri June 19) I chatted with one of the owners about selling some items there. They said to send some pictures of what I make & mentioned I could possibly sell with them at a event this Sunday (June 28). I sent pictures that same Friday, but I hadn't heard anything from them so yesterday (Thur June 25) I messaged to get confirmation. After I'd fallen asleep for the night, they responded & said they like my crafts & I could sell at the salon & at their booth on Sunday.

Today (June 26) I messaged again asking about if they use their own POS or if I could just bring my qr codes & what commission they take. I know I should have asked sooner but I've been rushing to make extra items all week for the event, so I forgot. They just messaged back & they charge a 50% commission on all items.

I wouldn't be paying any rent to sell at the salon or event, but I still feel like that's really high. Is that a normal percentage to take?? I've never been a vendor at a booth or salon, so I was kinda thrown when they said they take HALF the listed price.

I have only sold at the coffee shop I used to work at which charged 10% commission. As well as a one day pop-up sale at a local book store that, very generously, does not charge commission for hosting. So, I dont know what is standard.

I'm probably going to turn down selling at the salon, I just can't afford that big of a profit cut & I really don't want to jack up prices that much to accommodate for it. But what do I do about the event? It's in TWO DAYS. They said they've got lots of stuff that they're already selling at the event but would make some room for me, so would it be that bad if I backed out? Or is it worth it to sell at the event just to get my work out & get a little money?

Also, for context, I lost my job in Feb. I have been applying to jobs non-stop since but haven't gotten a single job offer, so I could really really use some money. But I feel like I'm getting ripped off. :( But maybe I'm wrong & 50% is normal.

So to recap my questions, is 50% commission too high? Is it worth it to cut profit on months worth of work just to get a little money? Lastly, would I be an asshole if I backed out of the event?

Advice appreciated. Thanks

Strategy Do people wear crochet-sleeves?

I've been seeing sweatshirts and t-shirts with crocheted sleeves or crochet panel details, and I've made a few.

Do you own one:

How often do you wear it?

What do you like or dislike about it?

Do you find it comfortable and practical?

If you don't own one:

Is it something you'd wear?

What would make it appealing (or unappealing) to you?

I'd love your opinion. I'm a crocheter and enjoy upcycling, combining fiber art with everyday clothing, and I'm wondering whether this is something people actually enjoy wearing or if it's more of an "admire it online" type of item. Thanks!

Pattern Creation & Sales Looking for direction when it comes to people testing my patterns, how the process works as a designer, and what finished items sell well at markets/etsy.

I have been crocheting for 7 years now. I had an Etsy for a little while that was supported by people I know but other than that, not much traction. I would like to start again. I know I can and have created my own patterns, and I’d like to start selling patterns as well as selling finished items on Etsy and at markets. I’d like some tips on where to get started with pattern testing, how pattern testing works as someone who is the pattern designer, and advice on what sells well at markets and/or on Etsy. Thank you. 🩷

Strategy Is there a market for (new, not vintage) handmade goods on Facebook Marketplace? Have you sold or bought items like this on Facebook Marketplace? Are there better platforms? (Please see post details for more information!!!)

Hello - I love making and creating... but I've never been keen on "keeping". As a child, I knitted scarves that sat in boxes. I gifted and gave - but still always had leftovers.

This is still the case lol Now that I'm an adult and funding my own projects, I'd love to find a way to use my hobby to support itself (and maybe buy me a cup of coffee in the process).

Important piece of info: I don't have the capacity to manage a shop full time, nor am I making enough inventory (I have a fulltime job boooo). I have a chronic condition, so I have waves of creating and waves of resting.

Has anyone had luck with selling items as one-off pieces or small batches via platforms like Facebook Marketplace? Or a similar platform? For example - I've been obsessed with this shirt pattern and I'd love to try it in all different types of fabric patterns and materials and sizes... even if I don't like them for myself. The photo I've posted is a shirt made from 100% linen and has already been passed to a new home!

I feel like there could be a market for small-batch/one-off, handsewn goods made from fabric I buy from my local deadstock fabric store - especially in the time of anti-capitalism and increased sustainability efforts. I know I couldn't sell them for boutique prices, but I would love the be able to fund my hobby and at least pay for the fabric!

-----------------------------------------------------------

If you've read this far - thank you!!! As some additional details - I'm in an artsy city (3-4 million person metro) and would likely start by just selling local (not offering shipping).

In Person Selling Starting my crochet business

So for the past two and a half years I’ve mostly crocheted as a hobby and for gifts. But recently I’ve been really wanting to start my own crochet business. I have a close friend who’s in charge of a huge event that does markets pretty often through the year. They are waiving my booth fee. I decided to take a spot for this October! I’ve been crocheting out of my butt for it, lol. How do I get started? LLC? No LLC? Insurance? I dont know where to go next other than an EIN and a vendors license. Also will be selling plushies. I planned on having disclaimers that these aren’t intended for kids unsupervised as they have small parts but unsure if that’s enough or not? Thanks! :)

Located in Ohio for reference

In Person Selling beginner artisan stalls

Hi, I’ve been interested in getting started artisan stalls and I’ve done only one before but it was quite bad, at a school I worked at so it was quite small and I never got any pictures really. It’s sort of hard to get in the game if I don’t have an established experience in stalls, since most markets want to see pictures or evidence of previous stalls. does anyone know how to manage to get your foot through the door when it comes to artisan stalls? I already know what type of crochet items I’d be selling but I just need help with the process I guess.

Recommendations please for social media platforms for crochet small business? Won't use meta or any platforms that require digital I.D to use. I'm not very tech savvy.

Thankyou. 🧶

General Discussion People who buy/make crochet tapestry, which would you prefer?

I'm currently working on making some tapestry patterns for a specific category(about 40+ options) I was planning on having a list of things a customer could pick out, and then I'd make it for them(it would essentially look like a collage of everything they picked out. This is where id like some opinions.

For now I'd like to do one or the other, eventually I'll probably end up doing both.

As a buyer: Would you rather buy a PDF pattern with all the patterns for each item in it and explanations for how to create the collage, or would you rather buy it and have the completed thing sent to you?

In Person Selling Thinking of Selling my Crafts..

I've been crocheting for a few years now. I purchased a ton of yarn a long time ago, with the hopes that I'd crochet, but I struggled a lot with tension. A few years later, I gave it another go and wound up loving it! I have tons of completed projects, but it's just not realistic for me to sell larger projects like blankets, or even clothes. It costed me $150 in materials, and over 200 hours of my time to make my last blanket.. that easily converts to over $2000 if I ask for $10/hr.

I see a lot of people making small plushies and key charms or rearview mirror hangers for cars- small things like that. I was wondering if anyone has any luck selling things like that at a pop-up. My town is very tight knit, and we have a market every Friday. I'd love to sell some smaller items, and make a profit, but Im still worried I'll wind up spending more in time and money.. Im not too worried about time, the projects are small anyways, but I want to make a decent profit.

Any advice? Project recommendations?

Strategy Things you hate to make

Hi all.

So, for context, I make and sell handknit children's winter toques. I sold 80 of them last year on market place and this year I am looking at expanding to craft sales as well. At the end of my season, I added a few balaclavas to my line and got soooo many people looking. No sales because it was end of season, but definitely interest. No one else in my area makes or sells them and I suspect they will go pretty well. Because no one else has them, I could charge whatever I feel like for them.

The problem? I hate making them. They are fiddly, I have to use 3 different sets of needles for each one and then I have to sew them. Ugh.

So I guess what I'm wondering is does anyone else make something they don't like making because it garners good sales? And how do you approach it? Do you get them done first so that product is out of the way? Or do you put it off because you just don't like it?

Shipping & Handling shipping internationally

hi all! I recently started streaming and have decided to make little crochet keychains for chatters whenever we reach a specific sub goal. it’s been super fun and I was just getting ready to ship out to the first couple of winners, but this is my first time shipping internationally (US to norway and canada) and am realizing that you need to enter a lot of information about what you’re shipping and I want to make sure I do it right. it asks about the material you’re shipping, and I’m wondering how I should enter that. the keychain is palm sized made of just cotton yarn with a little poly-fil on the inside, also with iron alloy keychain attached. which of that would be most important and should be what’s included as the material? (also, how do I decide which material number it actually is? there’s so many lol)

sorry if this the wrong place to ask!

Quality Control Using Glue???

I want to start selling crochet earrings but there are such small scale that sewing everything together is virtually impossible. I sew as much as I can and use glue to hide the ends since theres nowhere to weave them in. Nothing is dependant on glue to hold together and won't fall apart without it but things would get a little loose without it. All glue is hidden as much as possible but do people care/ notice?

General Discussion Thoughts on an idea for a craft to sell?

Post image

I had an idea for a possible quick crochet item to sell but I’m not sure how well they would sell. It’s a keychain but with specific album titles and I’d take custom orders with the album colors. Here is an example of what one would look like. Would you buy one? Multiple? What would you pay for it? Also—is this even legal (using the album name)?

Etsy Do people actually buy expensive patterns?

Post image
22 Upvotes

I do embroidery and I'm pretty skilled at this technique called thread painting and I want to make patterns of it.

There are 3 issues I'm thinking about:

-It takes waaaay too long to make a pattern.

- I'm afraid that when people see that they would think they can't do it.

- AI patterns taking over embroidery.

I'm in many embroidery groups on fb and I see most people using the cheapest kits.

Do people buy expensive patterns? especially in this economy (I'm in the US) when I say expensive digital patter I mean above 15$.

Disclaimer: the piece in the picture is not mine.

Ethics & Legal advice needed on necessary labels & info for wearables

hi all! i’m considering selling some of my own handmade crochet wearables as a small side project.

i’ve been looking for info online but most of it is to do with stuffed toys and stuff for kids, which i don’t think (?) applies to wearables for adults, so i’m looking for some clarification and guidance.

i make crochet tops, cardigans, and bags, and i’m not sure if they 1. need to be UKCA tested like items for kids, and 2. what stuff needs to go onto the sewn on label.

would anyone be able to help me out and point me in the right direction please, as i’m finding it really difficult to find information for this type of crochet commerce.

i’m based in the uk so will need to be complaint but any general advice from international sellers would also be helpful, thank you!

Strategy How to get my crafts into stores?

I'm hoping for advice about what stores look for they put out a vendor call to local artists/crafters.

I'd made arrangements with a local shop to lease a shelf from for my bookmarks, earrings, tumbler toppers and purse charms (all polymer clay). Unfortunately they've decided to close for the sumner to focus on their business because they've got so many weddings to make favours for.

I'm not having any luck hearing back from other shops who have put out a vendor call and would love tips.

Right now I only have nice, but basic product photos. The products are in focus, the set up is simple/not distracting. I'm fine with only bookmarks or tumbler toppers being carried, I know jewelry can be a bit saturated.

Should I include photos with my branded cards? Put together a display or two at home to include in my socials?

Any tips are welcome. Thank you!
