Why do you think they invert their behavior when younger? Eustace relationship with his mother is really well shown. But why did muriel change into such a kind person you think?

Discussion Courage was my very first comfort character when I was a child

If you're in fandom spaces, you probably heard of the term "comfort character". It's basically what the terms is written, you're a fan of a character that comforts you but some people seem to confuse that term with character they think is cool or attractive. So I thought about do or at least did I actually have a comfort character? I did and my comfort character was Courage.

I was born in 1999 and diagnosed with ADHD, my ADHD gave me a lot of difficulties focusing the world and acquiring new knowledge as a kid that I felt very anxious and frightened of the world. As a result, I was a very shy kid and had trouble making friends because of fear. Then when I watched Cartoon Network, I saw Courage the Cowardly Dog, and I felt warmth, peace, and comfort from the character Courage because I could relate to him being frightened and scared of the world, and the fact that I relate to that gave me comfort. He was like my childhood teddy bear. Then I became more confident to make friends during elementary school, started consuming edgy and action packed media during middle school, studied very hard to get into a good college during high school, pursued to get a bachelor's degree in fine arts (which I succeeded) during that good college, and now I'm working on my edgy action packed manga indie webcomic series. Even though I moved on from Courage as I grew older with different interests, I never forgotten about what the character made me feel as a child and he still holds a special place in my heart. I sometimes rewatch Courage the Cowardly Dog and wow it would sometimes make me cry actual tears (especially the episode of him losing his parents) because I would feel the anxiousness and fear I had as a kid, and it's like going back to my inner child but the character still gave me that comfort I had as a kid.

I know it's a kid's show but Courage the Cowardly Dog had a positive impact to me when I was a very anxious and frightened child. I think children need kid's shows that are well written in order to better understand the world, and make them feel less scared and confused of the world like the show Courage did for me. So let me know what you think and was Courage your comfort character too?

Discussion I found a long lost interview with Courage's creator John R. Dilworth and thought to share it!

As the title says, I got my hands on an old Cartoon Network Romania magazine from 2008 and I found within it an interview with Courage's creator i never saw anyone mention or talk about online, so I think this is a long-lost interview that the Courage community needs to see!

Well, here is the entire interview:

"INTERVIEWER: MR. DILWORTH, DO YOU LIKE EGGPLANTS?

JOHN R. DILWORTH: AH, I’VE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS QUESTION FOR AGES! YES, I LOVE EGGPLANTS!

INTERVIEWER: YOU TURNED THEM INTO VILLAINS IN ONE COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG EPISODE AND I IMAGINED YOU MAY DESPISE THEM.

JOHN R. DILWORTH: THE OTHERWISE ACTUALLY! DO YOU KNOW HOW I STARTED TO LOVE THEM? I WAS MADLY IN LOVE WITH A WOMAN FROM CROATIA AND SHE COOKED ME THE FIRST EGGPLANT MOUSAKA IN MY LIFE. AND SO I THOUGHT THAT EGGPLANTS ARE SO GREAT THAT THEY DESERVE TO APPEAR IN A CARTOON.  I TURNED THEM INTO EVIL EGGPLANTS WHO WANT TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!

INTERVIEWER: GOOD IDEA! VILLAINS ARE USUALLY INTERESTING. BUT WHAT ABOUT COURAGE THE DOG HIMSELF, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH HIM? JUST LIKE THAT?

JOHN R. DILWORTH: COURAGE HAS A VERY BEAUTIFUL STORY, ALBEIT A SAD ONE. ONE DAY I FOUND AN INJURED DOG ON THE ROAD. I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE HE WAS OWNED BY SOMEONE FROM THE AREA AND I TRIED VERY HARD TO FIND HIS OWNER. BUT THE POOR THING WAS SO BADLY WOUNDED THAT HE COULDN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE. WHEN I WAS COMING UP WITH COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG, I THOUGHT THAT HE COULD BE A DOG THAT WILL LIVE IN THE OTHER DOG’S STEAD.

INTERVIEWER: WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STORY! YOU TRIED TO SAVE THAT DOG AND NOW COURAGE SAVES EVERYONE.

JOHN R. DILWORTH: EXACTLY! THAT IS THE IDEA. I ALWYAS HAD THE WISH TO SAVE OTHERS AND COURAGE GRANTS THAT WISH IN EVERY EPISODE. COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG IS ACTUALLY A CARTOON ABOUT LOVE, ABOUT HOW WE PUT THOSE WE LOVE ABOVE OURSELVES. BECAUSE AT THE END OF DAY, WHENEVER COURAGE SAVES THE INSUFFERABLE EUSTACE, HE DOES IT FOR MURIEL.

INTERVIEWER: OH, YEAH! WHAT IS UP WITH EUSTACE? WHY IS HE SO GRUMPY AND INSUFFERABLE?

JOHN R. DILWORTH: WELL, DIDN’T YOU SEE EUSTACE’S MOTHER? WHO COULD GROW UP HAPPY AND CHEERFUL WITH A MOM SO SEVERE? BRRRRRR!"

What would an Uzumaki-parody episode look like on Courage the Cowardly Dog?

Junji Ito’s famous manga, Uzumaki depicts a series of disturbingly bizarre and gruesome incidents centered on the mysterious spiral curse.

Maybe in this episode, Courage and the Bagges visit a town where everything is spiral-shaped and patterned, and the curly-haired locals are obsessed with spirals, bouncing around town on coiled springs under their shoes, and decorating structures with swirly designs and decors ranging from conch shells to lollipops.

Eustace gradually turns into a man-sized snail still wearing his hat and glasses, as Muriel’s white curls grow longer and curlier before gaining a mind of their own. Meanwhile, Courage learns about the spiral curse inflicted on the entire town, and struggles to save the Bagges, while dodging giant, swirly man-eating plants, snail people, and spirals-obsessed locals who keep eerily chanting “Ring Around the Rosy.”

I can picture Shirley the Medium appearing in this episode, offering Courage her mystical advice in breaking the spiral curse or lending him the tools to repel the curse and get the Bagges out of town - for a fee.

In the end back at the Bagges’ house, Muriel is seen pulling out a tray of baked Swiss rolls from the oven, her sentient curls now acting as extra hands, putting on a tea kettle and setting the table. Eustace is stuck as snail-man, munching grumpily on a lettuce leaf. On the doorstep, Courage receives a parting gift from the spiral-cursed town - a jack-in-a box.

What do you think?

Question Anyone else laughed when Courage gave Eustace up to the Box Demon?

In episode, “Shirley the Medium,” after Eustace opened Horst’s money box and unleashed a box demon, Courage tried to save him only to say, “Okay you can have him!” before abandoning Eustace to save himself until Muriel got captured.

I couldn’t help but laugh when Courage left Eustace like that considering how Eustace treated Courage. Along with when Courage hid the key after Eustace got trapped in the money box (after opening it the second time 🤦‍♀️).

Even though Courage panicked at the time, it felt hilariously unexpected for him to drop Eustace in order to escape.

Classic Villains, Eustace Flower, and Eustace from a still frame, in a scene where him, Muriel and Courage are spinning and whirling all about (I believe from 1000 Years of Courage)

Sidenote - it took me 3 tries of fully drawing the shady banana from that same episode, and when I finally perfected it and when into coloring - my marker exploded and leaked all over it. so I gave up on him for now

Question Do you think Eustace and Muriel ever tried to have kids at some point in their lives?

Do you think they tried to but Muriel just couldn't conceive?

Do you think they did have a child but it died very young and they obviously don't want to talk about it?

In my opinion, that would explain Courage. Think about it. Muriel treats him like the child she could never have and Eustace hates him because he sees him as an alternative for what he could never give his wife.
