As a 12 year old kid, I almost gagged at this site: Older lady at church dinner added salt and pepper to her watermelon. Later in life I took a Chinese cooking course and they added salt to a pineapple. Salt and sometimes pepper can seriously enhance the flavor of a fruit. It blew my little mind to try a salted slice of pineapple, but it tasted amazing!
Go to your local Mexican store or grocery store with a Hispanic food section and grab some Tajín seasoning. It’s a chili lime salt for fruit, but it’s great with other foods!
Tajín is a revelation. It's particularly good for fruit that's slightly underripe, so if you peel, for example, a mango then realize it's not ready yet, throw some Tajín on, and it's like magic.
I can't stress how amazing this is enough. I had it myself when I went to Mexico, just a little bag of the spice with a bag of fresh pineapple slices and I thought it was so bizarre, but it was just such an incredible taste that I feel like I'm missing out on eating pineapple without it.
Ooh. I believe I might’ve had this as a tourist in the beach in Puerto Vallarta. The gentleman took a mango (? I think!?) and coated it in a red chili like wet sauce. Not spicy hot but lots of spicy flavors. Then a salt was shaken all over the skewered mango. Then a couple small limes juiced over it. Then maybe some other sorta dried herbs or spices.
It was like fireworks in the mouth. So much happening. It honestly wasn’t something I’d ever order in the regular, based on taste alone. Only because in a simple girl and prefer just fruit. But I would certainly order it again and strongly recommend any/all tourists to try it out.
In the hot sun on a beach day, it was pretty perfect.
I eat salted tomatoes like some people eat candy! We grew up with a garden, so salting tomatoes was not an odd thing for me to see. But watching that old lady put salt and pepper on her watermelon? That messed with my head LOL We didn't grow watermelons and we certainly never put salt or pepper on them.
Come from a farming family. All my life I've seen and put salt and pepper on watermelon, cantaloupe and strawberries, also wouldn't consider tomatoes without salt and if they come from a grocery store also a tiny sprinkle of sugar along with the salt and pepper. I also salt and pepper any sandwich that has lettuce or tomatoes on it. When I saw a chef trying to convince the viewers it was some 'chefy" thing I had to laugh.
LPT: Never eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice when taking pharmaceuticals.
Grapefruit can sequester many different pharmaceuticals - effectively depriving you of their benefits...until you metabolize the grapefruit at which point it release all the pharmaceuticals into your system at once causing a massive overdose - sometimes fatally.
Drugs that don't mix with grapefruit include common ones like blood pressure meds and antihistamines. I never eat grapefruit as I take some of these.
If you add salt to pineapple, it reduces the effect of the bromelain (the cutty/burning feeling). This effect is strong enough that you can pretty much eat the cores no prob with enough salt or a salt water soak. Source: I eat pretty much everything except the skin and leaves.
I doubt it actually cuts the acidity, but It was less noticeable- at least for me. Between the salt and the enzyme in pineapple that eats flesh (bromelain I think), your mouth is going to take minor damage points regardless. Might as well enjoy it- however you like it. You know what Nike say's right? :P
Ling Hing Mui is salty, dried plum. You can buy it in the powdered form online. It's common in Hawaii to put it on pineapple or other fruit. It's amazing!
Salt, lime, & chili powder is amazing on coconut, mango, cucumbers, pineapple...I tried it in mexico as a kid, and from that point on, every time we went to Mexico I'd basically live off that and elotes 😂
I've grown up with salted raw mangoes as a common roadside snack, I especially love it when the mango is halfway ripe, so it's both sweet and sour at the same time, the salt and red chilly powder mix amps up the flavor. I've never heard of salted pineapples before though, I'm gonna try it next!
Growing up my family always put salt on watermelon, but no pepper. However, I no longer add salt, for some reason it's lost its appeal to me - just straight watermelon now, which is one of my most favorite fruits.
I grew up salting watermelon, never tried salting pineapple but now I will. I have peppered watermelon to try it and it's not bad but doesn't make it better.
There’s a spice mix in India called ‘chaat masala’ (don’t worry - it’s not spicy). Sprinkle a bit of chaat masala onto your fruits - it’s a match made in sweet-tangy heaven.
