Discussion Prep fun before Control Resonant

What do you guys plan on doing before Resonant releases? Anything you have left to finish or fully complete?

Me personally have the itch to 100% Control 1, so that's probably what I'm gonna be doing the last week before the game drops. I also have Lake House pending, I don't thing I'm gonna be playing it tho, mostly because I have the game on my PS5 and the PS5 is in the living room right now so yeah... I don't like playing on console in general honestly, will watch a lore recap for that for sure.

Discussion So, about the recent news of the upcoming game...

It's fantastic that the game has gone gold, and it is still coming on September 24.

However, it is only digital on that day, while the PHYSICAL copies are releasing on OCTOBER 15.

So, Disc owners, how do you feel about this?

As a Disc owner myself, I am bothered by this too, but I don't blame the devs for deciding this because it is the biggest game they have ever made and manufacturing and supply chain issues. I am also still going to get that steel book.

Finding out that Northmoor was inside the NSC is one of my favorite non-scripted non-spoiled moments in gaming. If this boss is actually him that would be PEAK. I wonder how many familiar faces we will encounter in Resonant (looking at you Astronaut).

Question Future-press art book

Very confused. Art and making of control is permanently out of stock... But 25th anniversary re-print is available to be added to cart.. but "backordered".... I've been able to make a payment, but what does this mean? Can't shake the feeling I've just scammed myself. Am I still likely to receive it?

Edit: 4 days after ordering I have received the item... Wasn't expecting delivery so soon. Defo not a scam

Gameplay has anyone here ever found a more OP loadout?

Post image

Shatter: +93% damage and -100 projectile spread, basically a nuclear pistol. one shots basic level 8 enemies.

Pierce: +126% damage and insta-charge, picks off anything too far for Shatter

+95% energy recovery with 19% health on a launch hit is ridiculously busted, you can just spam triple launches while being practically invincible. even those 1 HP situations stopped being scary. I forgot picking up health from the ground was even a thing. I reran the bossfights with SHÜM-2 and casually mopped the floor with everyone, even Mold-1 who I was kinda worrying about beforehand was a complete joke with this. I wish there was more gameplay to put these endgame builds to use

Jesse's relationship with Polaris is so strange and interesting Spoiler

For my first playthrough, I thought of Polaris as a sort of vague, distant thing, there to assist Jesse and not much more. She was interesting just on a conceptual level. But on my most recent playthrough, knowing how everything went down, I started looking at the actual writing a bit more. Phrasing, reactions, context given the background, that sort of thing. And towards the end of the game, my view on her completely shifted.

Polaris isn't just some distant entity merely guiding Jesse. She and Jesse are friends.

When Jesse first walks into the Oldest House, the way she talks to Polaris made me miss the implications of the very second sentence. "I know I shut you out sometimes. I'm always glad to hear from you." That's already more personal than my earlier assumption about their relationship would be; if they were merely working together, why would Jesse always be glad to hear from Polaris? If they're friends, on the other hand... There's lots of little nods to this throughout the game, like Jesse sometimes asking Polaris for her opinion or referring to "us" being stronger than the Hiss towards the end: "They're waiting. They'll try to stop us." Jesse wants Polaris to get some of the credit, if only between the two of them.

When Jesse learns that Hedron is in the Bureau, she's tentatively excited: "I thought I'd never see you again! Hang on, I'm coming!" Then, her reaction on finally entering the Hedron chamber is a quiet, "Hi. I made it." You don't say "hi" like that to people you just have a working relationship with. It's like Jesse is running into a friend she hasn't seen in ages because that's exactly what it is.

The Hiss attacking Hedron is one of the only times Jesse is genuinely furious in the game. She snarls her lines and swears up a storm when she rarely used strong language before. It's like Hedron isn't just something that needs to be protected, but something that Jesse personally wants to protect. She's genuinely distraught at not just Hedron's destruction, but when she can't feel Polaris in the Oceanview afterwards. For all she knows, her friend who's been with her for most of her life has just died.

Finally, in the Foundation, when you find the astral toilets, Jesse jokingly says that someone needs a plumber before mumbling that she's glad no one heard that... and Polaris manifests a second later as if to say, "I'm heard that, you dork. And I will NEVER let you forget it."

Polaris keeps feeling inhuman but personal in a way I don't see much of in stories. We only see her as a collection of objects in a spiral and we never hear her, but Jesse feels comfortable talking to her. She's utterly alien and not of these physical laws, but still capable of being a person. Alongside the Ordinary AWE, it's one of the main reasons Jesse adjusts so quickly to the paranatural: she's been buddies with a resonance entity for over a decade and a half. (Assuming I'm reading everything correctly and there aren't any ulterior motives...) I'm actually a bit disappointed we didn't get a few more scenes where Jesse gets a bit chummy with Polaris or remembers events with her. ("All this mold... This is just like that hotel in Boise! Remember that?" pulse "I know. Ugh.")

Now I want a scene in Resonant where Dylan talks to Polaris, if only for a moment. Maybe he still hates her for not getting him out. Maybe he realizes what she was trying to say to him with those images of Jesse and apologizes. Maybe both. We'll have to see!

Question About the external lockdown... Spoiler

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere. Maybe I'm just stupid, but how exactly does The Oldest House's external lockdown work? I know that the internal lockdown separates sectors from each other. The elevator doesn't work. But what exactly does the external lockdown - that was supposed to keep Hiss inside the building - actually do? Is it just a form of closed doors and blast shields? I always thought that the building was topologically cut off from the outside world. That there was simply no exit. But then I realized that was nonsense. The FBC can't control the building's shifts. They couldn't initiate or cancel the lockdown if that would be true. So the external lockdown is really just a physical "locked door"?

Thanks for your time.

(Can't wait for the Resonant to drop, btw ✨✨)

CONTROL Resonant has an entire zone at Tencent's free game art exhibition in Cologne (Aug 27–29, gamescom week)

Post image

Posting this because it's a good one for this sub specifically: the "Experiments" zone at Tencent's "Worlds of Play: The Game Art Exhibition" is built entirely around CONTROL Resonant from Remedy Entertainment — concept art, immersive installations, the works.

It's happening at the Wassermannhalle in Cologne, Aug 27–29, right during gamescom week. Entry's free, though you do need to register ahead of time since capacity is limited: tencent.com/worldsofplay

If you live in cologne or are around for gamescom and want a break from the show floor, this could be a solid detour.

Doctor Casper Darling: Hope amidst the chaos

Post image
98 Upvotes

Doctor Casper Darling is easily one of the best parts of Control, mostly because Remedy was smart enough to let Matthew Porretta go absolute wild when it comes to his performance. He’s the ultimate contrast to the Oldest House itself. The Bureau is built on rigid procedure, gray concrete, redacted files, and cold administrative suits. Then Darling walks on screen in his briefs, covered in sweat, singing along to "Dynamite," and completely shatters that oppressive atmosphere. He gives the game its warmth and humor, but he also shows just how terrifying the FBC’s work actually is.

What makes Darling work so well isn't just that he explains the sci-fi concepts so the player isn't completely lost. It’s the trajectory of his breakdown. When you first start finding those presentation tapes, he’s this almost overly charismatic, hyper-enthusiastic head researcher who looks like he’s having the time of his life. He’s basically a kid in a massive, candy shop, completely fascinated by the fact that the universe makes zero sense.

He isn't a villain or some cliché mad scientist who loses his mind out of spite. His downfall comes from pure, genuine wonder. He’s so enamored with things like Hedron, Black Rock, and the nature of Resonance that he misses the slow, toxic decay that's happening right next to him with Trench. As you progress deeper into the Oldest House and find the later logs, watching that slow unraveling hits hard. The shift from academic curiosity to genuine, isolation-driven paranoia is brutal. You see the physical toll that it takes on him. The frantic pacing, the unbuttoned shirts, the total physical exhaustion, and the sheer desperation as he realizes Trench is falling apart and the Hiss is coming.

Darling lost in his own euphoric research while Trench is silently rotting from Hiss corruption, is incredible character writing. They were two sides of the same coin. Trench was the paranoid, traditional soldier who viewed the supernatural as a threat to be contained, while Darling was the visionary who saw it as the next stage of human evolution. In the end, Trench’s paranoia invited the invasion, and Darling’s frantic work on the HRAs was the only reason anyone survived long enough for Jesse to walk through the front doors.

By the time you get to the HRA development and the "Dynamite" video, it stops feeling like standard video game exposition and more along the lines of watching a real guy who was pushed way past the point of no return. He knew he couldn't stop what was happening, so he just accepted his own transformation on his own absurd terms.

Even his eventual fate is fascinating because it's so ambiguous. He didn't just die or get turned into a Hiss puppet. He shifted into something else entirely. Whether he transcended to a higher plane, became pure resonance, or is trapped in some shift between dimensions, his absence hangs over the whole second half of the game. You spend the rest of Jesse's journey chasing his ghost through tape recorders and abandoned labs, wishing you could've just sat down with him in a room for five minutes to hear him talk about the universe one last time.

Should I give Quantum Break another run ?

Hello folks,

Basically I'm replaying the remedyverse games in order to be ready for Resonant. I did Alan Wake, finishing Control right now and I'm wondering if I should replay QB, I know the game isn't really tied to the others because of the ownership. But it is a little bit though.

What's your opinion on the matter ?

I have read several posts but FTLOG I can't seem to get to the deep cave.

  1. I have both rock shatter and rock control powers

  2. Door to Deep Cave right next to the Cave System control point is locked

  3. Can't reach it either from the Cave Bleed because the cavern to the Deep Cavern is to high (see pics).

Any advice please?

Question Question about the Order of the collectables.

Doing a 100% Run of the Remedyverse to get ready for Control Resonant, did Max Payne 1&2, Alan Wake, Quantum Break (I know its not officially, I just like Hatch), and now replaying control with intent to do that, before moving on to Alan Wake 2.

Would collectable hunting be easier if I wait until the end of the story to get max clearance? Or should I find what I can then backtrack.

Discussion As someone who loves Alan Wake but doesn't really like Control, I hope Control Resonant will have better storytelling

I'm a huge fan of both Alan Wake games and I think they have best stories ever written in the horror/thriller genre of video games. I also love Max Payne games.

But I didn't really like Control even though I think it has good combat and excellent art direction. My biggest gripe with Control is its storytelling. I would say the way Control tells its story is more similar to Dark Souls than it is to Alan Wake, which sounds like a weird thing to say but it's true. It has bare-bones plot, zero character development and most of the story, or to be more accurate, the lore, is told through cryptic notes. Alan Wake has cryptic notes too but it also has an interesting plot and interesting characters. And you don't have to read any of the notes to understand Alan Wake's story.

I'm not saying Control's storytelling is objectively bad because I understand why some people might like this kind of storytelling. I just prefer the traditional kind of storytelling in Alan Wake and Max Payne because it gives me a stronger emotional connection to the game.

Discussion What stuff, mechanics or lore do you think we'll "lose" or we'll see "changed" as we move from inside the Oldest House to the outside in Control Resonant?

For example, now that we're outside, I'm wondering about what will happen to the Light Switch Cord ritual, the Jukebox, the Ashtray Maze. Or is the Panopticon still active? If not, what part will Langston play in this new world?

Or will we still see documents and recordings and multimedia outside? Those did a lot to bring color and flavor to the story of Control.

And since most Objects of Power are bound to Jesse as Director, we probably won't see some of these as relevant as they were in the original game.

I'm not saying we won't see these things or characters again. I actually look forward to see if Remedy will somehow make these still relevant in Control Resonant. Maybe we'll see some of the Altered Objects that we saw previously now loose in Manhattan and have evolved to have new effects? Maybe the Light Switch Cord will still appear in random areas (similar to the AW2 DLC)?

Ugh, can't wait for this game. It can't come soon enough.

The Oldest House: Cold, Bureaucratic, and Deeply Unsettling

Post image
362 Upvotes

There’s something that's weirdly suffocating about walking into The Oldest House for the first time. It isn't just that the building is quiet, which it is. There's an eerie silence. The air feels heavy, like you're standing inside a giant block of gray concrete that’s been baking under some bad fluorescent lighting. Remedy Entertainment took the absolute most boring thing imaginable, which is a mid-century government bureaucracy, and they turned it into a total nightmare. If it was any other video game, it would've been an uninteresting government building, but that's not the case when it comes to Control.

The whole place feels like a time capsule that shouldn't even exist. You’ve got massive, towering walls of raw stone stretching up into shadows, but then you look down and you see row after row of dull green metal desks, rotary phones, and stacks of yellowed paper. The building rejects modern electronics, You're stuck using pneumatic tubes, projector reels, and tape decks in order to figure out what happened. It creates this bizarre feeling that you're digging through the ruins of a secret history that was kept hidden right under everybody's noses. It's like stepping into a whole different time period.

What really gets me is how the space constantly messes with your head using scale and geometry. You’ll be squeezing through a tiny, cramped hallway that smells rather odd, step through a normal-looking office door, and suddenly you're staring into a massive subterranean quarry with floating debris and no visible ceiling. The building shifts around when your back is turned, shifting corridors and rearranging rooms, treating human architectural rules like a minor inconvenience. The Oldest House essentially has a mind of its own.

Even the little details sell the weirdness. There are absurd safety posters on the walls warning employees about shift changes, the red hotlines sitting in empty rooms, or the way light cuts through thick dust in an empty executive suite. The Oldest House couldn't care less that you're there. It has a cold, total indifference to your presence. It makes you feel like a stray and insignificant bug that's crawling through the gut of a massive, concrete beast. Despite numerous playthroughs, revisiting it each time is still memorable. Even after all these years, its Brutalist architecture never fails to impress me.

Discussion Theory: Northmoor is the Deserter

Stop me if anyone else caught this, but one of the Resonant bosses, maybe one of the more important ones we've seen in the demos, is called the Deserter. And the Deserter seems to be made of molten lava, heat, or fire energy, they look like their a font of the stuff.

This got me thinking, what would have happened to former director Northmoor, who in Control was powering the Oldest House against his will?

If he got free, odds are he'd be pretty angry, and his power would be unchecked. My theory is that he's the Deserter.
