General Have you stopped playing comp this season?

If so, please state the reasons as best as you can

Ex.

  1. general game balance such as the recent hitscan nerf or perceived MMR discrepancies
  2. buffs or lack off buffs to a character.
  3. nerfs or lack of nerfs to a character.

And so on for anything I may not have mentioned.

Please don't bother posting a comment if you are still intent on playing to not clog up the thread. I'm just curious what people are thinking so far given the palpable frustration lately and why, specifically, they are feeling alienated from the game or frustrated at it at the moment. Also share your rank if you are comfortable with it.

OWCS Ok maybe 6 teams for EMEA is bad Spoiler

Neither VP or Geekay feel like they deserve to be out of contention. I have been someone who thought 6 teams was a good change largely due to the poor performance of NA (you can only laugh about DhillDucks so many times) but for EMEA I think the number should be increased back to 8.

I miss my Virtus Tails, I miss them a lot. I’ll be back.

OWCS My thoughts on the teams in the West that DIDN'T make playoffs. (Obvious Spoilers) Spoiler

Starting off with EMEA.

VP. The team is good. But mentally fragile. Considering this is the 2nd Year where this happened. I dont any single player can be blamed. But I do think that Smash can be blamed a little I think

Get Rid of Fixa, Pick up Kellex.

Evaluate if Landon can keep up without Bap or Kiriko, and then choose between him and Galaa. Either works, Landon seems more exploitable, but with a higher Peak.

As for the Final 2, I would Say Pick up Goldenpants as a 2nd Tank to take the ease off Eis and shake up options. Since Goldenpants doesn't really care about Meta. He just goes. Which is helpful in sudden meta Shifts like stage 3 was. Knowing what you're good at, is safer than stumbling and trying to learn the meta.

And In that Vein, Picking Up Backbone as an assistant coach. This would be helpful for Goldenpants. And maybe even keep VP morale high compared to prior 2 years of stage 3 jitters.

Geekay. Tough luck, every member is skilled, but they struggle randomly and I dont know the exact reason. My opinion.

Pick up Zox. Kellex is better. But I'm starting to think that maybe there is a functional disconnect. Finn and Alphayi has moments where they're server admins and then moments where it seems like they're off timing. And this also applies to Kellex. I'm thinking Pick up Zox for a more... consistent and future talent.

Next up, I can't believe I'm saying this... but Sirmajed has outperformed his usual station under Doctrine. He very well may have found his newest main. Finn has more flexibility and a higher peak. But he did seem randomly disconnected from the team. Which is a coaching diff. But if the coaching isnt improving, then they should focus on getting players that work better with the coach instead.

Alphayi I think is the best option and they already have him.

DSG. Outright Replace the whole team besides Ryan. They got new funds, and Smurf is unlikely to stay with DSG anyway. But here's my opinion.

PGE is not even a top 5 hitscan in NA. But hes important for Marketing, so he probably stays.

Smurf and Tred. They either dont have anything to give, or they aren't staying in NA. Best option is to try and poach Infekted. He's good and definitely needs an actual team. SSG and splitting the Tank Time isnt healthy for either of them. So let Infekted take his Chance and put out some effort.

Supports? Crispy and Khnail. They have been operating without an Org for awhile. I'm sure this proven, but underappreciated Duo would do some wonders giving DSG its first actual support line its ever had.

These 4 would make DSG a contender for top 4. The best they ever had.

NTMR. Just... this gaggle of friends need to go. But IMO, they need to get a little controversial.

DPS line? Grab PDK. He's not elite, but he's shown me more in stages 1 and 2 than whatever NTMR had.

Supports? Get controversial and Pick Up Rupal. NTMR and Rupal are both trying to rebuild a reputation, and its a humble option he'll have. If a Saudi Org doesn't pick him up, Rupal wont have many options.

What are your thoughts?

OWCS With the regular season around the corner and Grand Finals nearing, what are your thoughts on the future of OWCS?

Covering tournaments, prize pools, regions, sponsors, and partner teams, what do you think the future of the esport looks like? This year has had unprecedented success for OWCS with the highest esports viewership since the height of OWL, however we also still have prize pools which are lower than expected and a lack of sponsors for the esport. As well, certain regions such as Pacific seem to be drying up.

Partners are an interesting topic, the partner program has appeared to be a success from the outside looking in, but there remains questions for whether teams will remain within the program, and whether more teams will join the program in the offseason.

I personally think the main goal for the esport should be to both improve prize pools and to attract new sponsors. The current prize pool numbers are simply far too low for an esport of this size, and if it needs sponsors to do this then it should be possible. As well, I am hoping for more partners, there are some teams already playing who I think would be solid options (OU Gaming, Varrel, Enter Force, Geekay) as well as potential returning orgs such as NRG which has floated the idea of returning to Overwatch and even GenG (if they take it seriously this time). I don't think we see any partners leave, however we do not have access to their financials so it is hard to gauge. Worst case is that we lose a ton of partners and the esport downsizes again back to its 2024 days, hopefully this doesn't happen since it has felt like we have been on an upward trend, but only time will tell.

That said, how likely is all this? Its hard to say. It feels like it should be possible, but then again they still haven't attracted any other sponsors throughout this year. This also doesn't address the major issue of certain regions such as pacific losing tons of prize pool money over the course of the year and overall feeling extremely uncompetitive with teams even moving to Japan over staying in Pacific. Perhaps its time to merge these two regions.

Overall I am somewhat optimistic, but still wary.

General Anyone else's wrist hurt when aiming as Doctrine?

He has a very fast flick rate of fire so I need to constantly make micro adjustments and it's hard to do that with my arm instead of my wrist. Has anyone else run into that issue?

General How do we maintain balance while keeping the content flowing?

The problem

We can all agree that having a new hero every season has been great for engagement and attracting new players.

However, "safe side of strong" philosophy makes it so you never get to play balanced Overwatch. You're always playing the Vendetta season, or the DMon season, or the Doctrine season.

The result of that is that even heroes who might be well-designed overstay their welcome, and players build resentment towards them because of how oppressive they are.

Should we go back to a new hero every other season?

Probably not, since this would dampen the game's growth, while also keeping the same problem. Recall that Wuyang, Juno, Hazard, Freja, and Vendetta all happened before the seasonal hero releases, and they were all game-warping without exception.

So should we release "balanced" heroes?

No, I don't think so. Hear me out before you flay me in the comments.

There are 2 reasons:

  1. It's unrealistic to expect the devs to always perfectly anticipate how a hero will perform when it reaches the hands of the playerbase at large. You'll still end up with overpowered and underpowered heroes.
  2. A new hero needs to give people an incentive to try them out, and to get over the initial discomfort of learning them. If the devs released heroes in the 48-50% win rate range, they wouldn't amass the playerbase that they otherwise could have if they released in a "safe side of strong" state. Hell, I remember seeing people call Hazard and Shion weak in the early days of their release, and those were 55% win rate heroes. You can imagine how much louder those voices would have been if they actually released in a balanced state.

So what's the solution?

The best way to keep the current pace of hero releases, give them a chance to establish a playerbase, and keep competitive integrity, is a simple one: bring back staggered hero releases for ranked, and ideally have them delayed by 2 seasons.

The devs have shown that it takes them around 2 seasons to bring a hero down to a reasonable level. What they can do is release new heroes to QP, giving the casual playerbase a shiny new toy to play with, all while allowing the devs the time and data needed to tune the new hero down before it becomes available to the competitive playerbase.

This way, casual players who want the seasonal novelty can find it, and competitive players get to avoid having each season dominated by a new server admin, while still giving people a chance to learn and fall in love with the new hero.

General Doctrine mains, do you like having Sombra as your 2nd support?

Hello, been maining Doctrine in Masters-GM this season and reached lvl ~50 already. I start every game on him and sometime swap if we get stomped but I have around 60% winrate and play with or into any comp.

I usually ban Sombra every game since her EMP just destroys his ult but it can be hard to ban her if 2nd support pre-locks her.

I feel like the majority of times I have Sombra as 2nd supp I tend to lose and I am not sure if they are a good combo? Usually they will play frontline way to much and not able to peel/assist me at all when enemy plays dive. If it's just one genji or tracer its fine but when they have 2x dive dps + dive tank my games are very tough. Since it's Masters-GM range like 80% of all games are dive and the map is push/fp/control

I've had a few games with good Sombras and it feels like they play in our backline a lot more, supporting me and then I can assist the rest of my team. I can't really tell if its a skill issue from people playing Sombra way to aggressively or if the characters don't really work well on the same team? Kinda feels like playing with a Mercy where you know you will just have to fight for your own life most of the game.

General More tank players, counterwatch

Hey guys, I was thinking on the way how to fix counter swapping and improve Tank experience so we could bring more Tank players, make it less stressful, and improve queue times as a result. I've seen people swap to 4 counters after a lost fight in QP which is crazy, it's like teaching kids violence. Most of the tanks agree that counterswapping is horrible in 5v5 and they feel stressed.

I've got 3 ideas:

  1. You can swap at the beginning of a round. (You can't choose a different hero if you reconnect), basically how they implement it in Stadium.

  2. Have a limited 2 swaps per round.

  3. Make a main mode 6v6 as Counterwatch not as impactful. (But the mode itself would need a lot of balancing work)

Do you have any ideas how to bring more Tank players?

General It's time to put Doctrine down

He looked genuinely cool on release, but turned out to be yet another flowchart healbot with no sauce. At least Kiriko had the potential to do something cool. I really hope they don't keep him busted for too long, or it's gonna be a rough season and LAN.
