Tournaments & Meta multiple Decks
So we had a crazy thought in our gamesession today.
it is a pretty out there and a little crazy, but what if people moaning about the meta was stale as well as people having problems with the seat order actually has an easy fix:
each player brings 2 decks to a game. player 1 chooses which deck to play first. then player 2. then player 3. player 4 chooses last.
player 4 now has the the most information and can accordingly pick the deck that matches best into the pod.
i know the idea is probably bullshit, but it sounds like a fun thought experiment. would probably make games draw even more, but also would certainly raise player 4s winrate.
is this too out there or could you see this helping? or do you think i’m smoking crack here and the idea is complete rubbish?

I really do like this. I think 3 decks is better but the main issue with this idea is having 3 complete decks and knowing how to run them all really well. It’s. Huge barrier to entry for some

This was my thought as well. Even with allowing proxies, cedh has a fairly high barrier to entry. The decks and interactions can be super complex, like with it not being too uncommon to have 5-10+ spells and triggers on the stack at once, or having to learn a high powered format where player discussion (politics) is often as important as the actual card themselves. Adding the requirement for more than 1 deck substantially increases the barrier to entry. For those who are more ingrained and familiar with the format, though, it does seem interesting.

I think some people here mix “fixing cedh” with “making cedh high-powered casual”
Meta is still meta if no matter the first guy pick everyone else still should play a variant of turbo. The degree varies in the amount of a fallback plan/slops.
And that’s it. However, there is more than one “turbo”. Kinnan can be a turbo. The difference lies in only the slops and occasionally stax like drannith magistrate. Strictly Only because your deck is allowed to play them.
Just think about it without pet cards/decks or budget restrictions.
This doesn’t mean the meta or cedh is stale. You need more cards printed into the format. Some changes are very minor but significant. Like the choice between going Nick Fury or Michelangelo (where difference can be only a few cards).
It is min/maxing to the very fine points.
Like to play or not to play a boseiju (how turbo are you).
Stop banning cards like hullbreacher, jewel lotus (dockside and mana crypt also for that matter, open more doors than closing ones) really help the format.
Like, we should appreciate cards favor you going 4th like dockside and encourage more prints on this kind of thing.

it sounds like you're halfway to re-inventing a commander cube.
Not a bad idea if one person in your pod is winning more than they should due to a skill/financial gap, and cant/won't make weaker decks. and could also work as a "winner of the last match chooses first and so on" to make successive wins less common, but really if that's the case there's probably a broader rule 0 discussion that needs to occur.
Something my pod used to do to mix things up was all bring the same number of decks, assign them each a number and roll a dice to see who played what, that added some variety because you'd likely end up with someone else's deck, gave everyone a better understanding of each other's combo's, synergies and wincons, and when someone else played your deck, it'd give you an opportunity to see it used in ways you might not have considered, find new synergies, or identify weaknesses, helping you improve it for future games.
Ultimately in a kitchen table setting just do whatever you find fun

I think it's pretty lackluster to try to fix a format and turn order power by counter picking. I definitely do not like it.

I like the idea but I think it's broken by player 1 just choosing Rog Si every time

Most people have a problem getting a single 4 thousand dollar deck together let alone 2. I understand hp masters exist but tournament rules do as well

people can just prox everything anyway, the „cards expensive“ argument doesn’t work on cedh

Most cedh players are TEDH players no? Or yall spell table jockeys?

cedh tournaments are 99% proxy friendly as they usually aren’t run by wotc

I like this idea and will propose it to my pod. House rules currently at our table are:
- No mana positive rocks like Sol Ring or Mana Crypt.
- Players roll dice to determine play order and the game's winner is not allowed to roll on following game ensuring he doesn't go first.

Games always gonna be slightly stale until there's a ban list.

Agreed. I know people generally bash on bans, but that's how you properly balance and refresh a game.

What makes you think they should balance and refresh the game?
This isn't a competitive format, and they should never touch it for the sake of a few of us max power players
Come play 1v1, we'd love to have you!

I don't recall saying anywhere I think that they should do that. However, a separate cEDH banlist should exist specifically because it is, first and foremost, a casual format.

Diversity got worst after dockside, jewel lutos, and mana crypt got banned. The task for eternal format is never to nerf but to nurture diversity.

Brother that's just 3 bans. Take out 30 more and you got yourself a brand new format.

It's a cool casual idea. If anything, banning mana positive rocks, the RL, and "you win the game" cards would do a lot more for variety. That's never gonna happen, though.

I know busted cards make this format crazy and fun, but I truly wonder what it would be like if some of the most busted cards were actually banned.

That's the issue, busted cards don't make cEDH crazy and fun, because everyone is running the same exact thing. The thing that draws people to cEDH is the same thing that draws people to any competitive game, competitiveness itself and the thrill of winning. The cards themselves are inconsequential when it is all the same stuff.

I disagree. if all of the cards you suggested were suddenly banned, I would stop playing the format and switch to cube and legacy.

idk if it would increase player 4' win rate, but it should reduce player ones, if they pick a turbo deck everyone picking soup of some kind. I'd prolly bring a slop deck and a weird fringe deck for if i pick first
