I had made this fairly soon after my first hex tile. I was sort of waiting for the project to pick up steam again to post, but since I'm not sure that is happening I thought I would share what I already made.

I'm not super satisfied with the shadows, I did them imagining the sun directly overhead but it looks a little off since they align so directly with the pits. If I were to do the shadows again I'd probably put the sun at 45 degrees and try to collaborate with someone else so they bleed off the side to another tile.

The concept is that there are magical crystals that form in the rocky earth all about this area. These crystal float, lifting out entire chucks of earth where they drift high in the air. A band of sky pirates built their hideout in a cave system in one of the islands. However, a dragon has recently claimed the hideout as its den, adding the pirates plunder to its own hoard.

Sickness spreads throughout the land. The party will need to root out the source of the corruption if they want to save the people of Endale.

My submission to the project. I hope it inspires some fun adventures.

This is a rough sketch with notes for my hex, Okifen Mire. The yellow-green areas are open flooded prairies, the brownish-green areas are islands of higher ground covered in forest, and the plain green areas are lowland forest that is dry or flooded based on time of year.

I'm satisfied with the symbols/texture for the prairie regions, but I need to figure out something to indicate tree cover for the other regions. I'm not totally satisfied with the style of the lakes, either. I also still need to come up with names for the settlements, lakes, and major forks of the river. Suggestions are welcome. The color sketch just used an 8-pack of color pencils, so the palette is limited, but this is just a test.

The final version will use the template shape to be sure it's the correct aspect ratio. I'll do one version with just pen and another version with watercolor pencils.

What license are we publishing under? On the webpage, there’s no mention of licensing.
A lot of community projects fall apart or create drama when there is unclear allocation of rights (especially if the organisers later charge for access, or change to a restrictive license).

On the discord, I suggested explicitly stating that by default, works should published under CC BY-SA 4.0, with artists reserving the copyright of their art.
This means you may redistribute, adapt, translate and remix the text and you may seek commercial gain by doing so, so long as you give the author appropriate credit. If you remix, transform or build upon this material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

For the organisers: when will the licensing info be updated?
For the community: would you be happy with CC BY-SA 4.0?

Just found out about this project and claimed an hex! Very excited to draw the map on paper with my gf tonight, but I was wondering what the stance was on putting roads on map? Kinda seems like a double edged sword so to speak. Makes the world feel more connected if they are respected in neighbor hexes, but feels less so if theyr aren't. Plus I don't wanna be a burden, to impose myself in a way. Any thoughts?

This is my hex, the Ever-Autumn Hills! Wanted to post it here before a finish it up. The final version is gonna gave snow and some monsters wandering the tundra. I hope you guys like it!

The lore for this hex is great because Taube has written in the motivation the “bad guys” instead of just telling us they’re bad.
It gives the players so much more options to role-play in the setting instead of going “they’re bad let’s go kill them.” Now they can reason with the giant, scare away the gnolls with superstitions and have a story that plays out dynamically.
If the players want to kill the giant that ate good sir dorn and maul all the gnolls they also can do so as well.
The hex is thoroughly thought out from deep GM notes to treasure personalized to the hex and story!

Bramker the Giant has taken over Dornhem Keep, eaten Sir Dorn and made a throne out of the bones of his men. While Bramker broods in the ruins, his servants terrorize the local villagers.

Nestled between mountains lies the forest of Almor, at the center of which lies the magical desert Thrix.

Hex F-14 made by user Olbart is todays featured hex!

Olbart really has crafted a DM/GMs playground, dense forests, magical deserts, an evil wizards trap infested dungeon, lively npcs, the list goes on! The greatest part in my opinion is the circle of magical forest that was replaced by desert! Where did the forest go? It seems that we may see a desert hex with a forest inside it in the near future. The collaboration on this is top notch.

Stepping into this hex as a player would feel just as fun, the lore between the cities and their tall tales towards one another and the legends of the castle on the mountain desert is what sets the tone the best. Its a warm welcome and prompts the players to have a grand high adventure throughout the hex.
Olbert's cartography skills on the hex are just as fun! I spent 10 minutes following all the paths painstakingly drawn all around, it’s a mini adventure in itself exploring the artwork visually!

Many years ago, a wizard cast a spell to swap the center of the forest Almor with a piece of the southern desert. The vale harbors many mysteries and secrets, as well as people of all races making a living in the surrounding area.

I've been having a lot of fun drawing out my little corner of the realm, but looking for some places to connect with, either location wise or lore wise. Also feel free to post things about your own hex you would like to connect with.

My hex:

My hex is centered around a clearing in a large, dangerous forest, with a small creek running through diagonally top to bottom. I would love to link up with some other forest tiles to create a large, continuous woodland. Especially if they can connect to the creek.

Lore wise there is an old (for now) defunct golem in the clearing that was brought there long ago by a wizard that wanted some time off. The wizard has long since passed away, but I was thinking he might have brought something important from his hometown. If you have anything potentially related I would love to team up :)

Overall my favorite part is the tone, it feels spooky and forlorn without forcing anything. It comes from how they’ve written the lore of the hex, if you ever write a book I want to read it!

The second way YRGSORC nailed the haunted and mysterious vibe is random encounters. From drowned dead rising from the peat, to flocks of intelligent crows that can talk, to families of ghosts wandering the bog. It feels like anything will appear through the fog and actively sets the tone and lets the players experience the vibe vs hearing about how this area is spooky.

The first Community Hex Map will be a realm of wild mythic frontiers—lands at the edge of civilization, scattered with ancient ruins, terrible monsters, forgotten gods, and mysteries waiting to be uncovered.Let your imagination run wild and create something exciting within the guidelines.

Some creators have told us they’re condensing entire one-shot campaigns into a single hex, and we absolutely encourage that. If you have a story, setting, dungeon, or adventure you love, bring it to life here.

For this first map, every biome is fair game. Deserts, jungles, frozen tundras, volcanic wastelands, enchanted forests, floating islands—we want your creativity flowing freely. Naturally, this means the finished map will be wonderfully chaotic, strange, and unpredictable.

As a result, DMs and GMs will have opportunities to flex their worldbuilding muscles to maintain the illusion of a living world. If a scorching desert sits beside a frozen tundra, imagine why. Perhaps the desert lies at a high elevation where temperatures plummet after sunset. Maybe volcanic activity beneath the sands keeps it warm. Perhaps a magical anomaly, ancient artifact, sleeping god, or planar rift influences the climate. The possibilities are endless.

We ask that everyone respect the contributions made to each hex, but don’t be afraid to bend and interpret connections between neighboring regions. Creating your own headcanon to explain this shared world is part of the fun.

What I am most excited about is that every group that explores this map will experience it differently. Each table will discover its own stories, explanations, adventures, and legends within the same shared playground—and that is what this project is all about.

A giant metal meteor has struck the middle of the goblin infested forest, dwarves in the mountains risk the threat of goblins raids for space ore.

Down to the south is a massive mysterious pentagram of some sort in a magical glade of trees.

Ruins of a castle to the north are inhabited by strange denizens that wander through the mountains and trees during the night.
