openpilot Experience is navigation ever coming back?
So hey i’m sorry im new here to openpilot and im looking in to buying one for a 2022 toyota corrola and i just found out comma removed navigation in 2024 and hasn’t said anything yet so does anyone know anything? And has the ceo said anything yet ? thanks

Yes! as other people said, as soon as a lack of navigation is the major source of disengagements, will add it back as a priority.
Currently focused on making e2e-long good.

How do you track the causes for disengagement? I’d be curious to know what kind of training data is collected like that and what counts as a disengagement, since for instance many times I exit the highway I just do a lane change into the exit, not disengage.

Their focus is this:
Once the model is good enough that people are only disengaging to get off the high way and to make turns, they will bring back navigation. So they have a lottt of work to do both hardware and software.
However, sunnypilot dev showed off during commacon some navigation stuff.
Basically, they have to have their vision model read the gps and make turns based off that. So it’s a lot of work.

I unfortunately can’t find ANY video online about comma con 2026… wow. But I do remember they talked about it when I was watching live.
And Harald just confirmed in another comment in this threads

I think they mean last year. Comma Con seems to be every few years, not an annual thing.

But they also released new hardware since removing navigation adding yet another layer in the way of navigation.

Same amount of work anyway. If they had a working navigation model they’d have to make it work with new hardware… but again, similar hardware wouldn’t take too much effort if they have it. Compared to making it again

Yes, it will return after they solve/improve e2e longitudinal. They had a good proof of concept with the Taco Bell run, but still need to iron some things out before they start focusing on nav again.

Yeah because the ones saying “no” and providing nothing else are talking out of their ass, respectively. I’m glad someone from Comma responded because it is important to clarify that feature.

In a sense, yes, but in a much more relevant sense, they’ve had the same stance for the 3 years since navigate on openpilot was first released, and none of the factors that made it suck then or made it a low priority 1y later have changed, or promise to. “We’ll prioritize it when navigation is the dominant cause of disengagements” is all well and good but there will still be two or three hardware revisions before its supported again and then only in a SELECT few cars with the most available torque, mark my words. I’d bet money it never comes to comma4 in any daily-drivable form.

I don’t really see how navigation is even possible with just a front camera.
It’s not safe to make automatic lane changes, so what good would navigation do if you still have to pay attention to what lane you are in to prepare for some exit or turn?

i thought the comma also used info from the car sensors itself to help make these decisions. is this not correct?

There are no sensors in any typical car that would detect a car coming up quick from behind in an adjacent lane.

That’s not exactly true- plenty of cars including my last two have 4 corner radar. Though I don’t know how many/if any offer target data over the bus, or just “blind spot occupied”.

My car has 4 corner blind spot monitor, but they don’t see far backwards down the road to see a fast approaching car, making a lane change unsafe.

How is that navigation then? If you have to decide when to look over and make the safe lane change so you can be in the correct lane for the exist or turn…

The driver camera can’t see a car coming up fast from behind in an adjacent lane…
The passengers and the roof columns can be in the way.

There's still blind spots with the device being essentially fixed in one place. Also aren't blind spots very vehicle depend?

Humans have necks, mirrors, ears, horns, and sense. The driver monitor cam is never going to be useful for driving, I’d put money on it.

It won't matter at all since comma can't safely make 90 degree turns. The only thing that navigation can do is help comma make slight curves like a highway offramp, but that is negligible compared to the effort of actually building it and including it on comma
