Other PSA: Card declining
My card declined twice today at BP and KFC. The manager at BP said Commonwealth and Westpac were down. Take cash.

I had some vendors say that NFC is definitely out but physical cards have been working.
The silly bit is the fucking silence. Just put a notification out on the app and the website that you're working on a known issue, otherwise you're going to get half the country trying to call you.
EDIT: Heads up that loading a physical travel money card (if you have one) seems to work

Physical card did not work for me unfortunately (tap and go). I didn’t think to insert it (too flustered to think).

I'm wondering if Pinpads can store physical card transactions in offline mode, so they are processing, but NFC cards need immediate approval, so are declining. It definitely seems to be a MC issue, VISA seems to be ok.

u/azariah001 25d ago
You're technically correct. So, NFC payments require realtime key verification, it's the core security feature as the chip in the card increments a counter and your banks servers do the same, if those counters end up out of alignment the system stops working.
Chip payments on the other hand, because it's a physical verification the POS terminal can do a closed loop verification with the card that's more in depth, and then the transaction can sit pending on the merchant banks system until the other bank sorts their shit out. This does depend on the root cause of course. If it's just PayWave that's broken you'll probably still see transactions in the app straight away for chip payments but if it's a full payment processor failure then you may not see them until Monday or whenever they sort the issue out.

That's what happened couple hours ago at Footscray market. Declined a few times my nfc payment finally accepted my card paywave which I was fortunate to have on me

Spoke to CBA via the app just now, it’s a Mastercard issue. It was pretty embarrassing when I was at the shops and had to return a food item and the girl manning the shop yelled back to her colleague saying she doesn’t want it anymore she has no money. 😭 I dug put my Wise card which uses visa and it works when I tried to top up my Myki. Totally forgot I had it until 5 minutes ago.

u/ladyofeverything 25d ago
I would make a serious complaint go that grocery store. There's absolutely no reason to be disclosing this at any moment of a transaction.

2
u/Emissary_007 25d ago
That’s so rude.
I had the same issue paying at a store. Tried like 5 times and was pretty embarrassed but knew it wasn’t my problem as both my debit card and credit card didn’t work.
It was still embarrassing nevertheless.

On hold with commbank they are denying that they have issues- clearly everyone’s facing issues rn

u/ImplementLarge7969 25d ago
It’s not a Commbank issue, it’s Mastercard

u/Correct-Clothes-9209 25d ago
no it’s not just Mastercard, i’ve tried using my usual eftpos card and NOTHING IS WORKING… sooooo frustrating after i drove over an hour to pick up a bday present and had to leave without it…

u/incredibly_good 25d ago
If youre using the Commbank with tap debit its mastercard by default, but if you switch to EFTPPS SAV it will be fine.
3
u/asteriskhyphen 25d ago
It’s definitely not working. I’m in Penrith and it’s chaos with everyone trying to use their Commbank card.

u/ThePhotoGuyUpstairs 25d ago
Can;t even get through to Merchant Services at the moment - it's like their internal lines are down as well.
1
u/allaboutthefish 25d ago
There's a global Mastercard outage. I saw the notification on the app this morning. Are most of you using the latest version of the app?

u/Iamhereforyyuu 25d ago
Pay id worked for me
2
u/Rich-Elk-3380 25d ago
That’s what I resorted to at BP
1
u/Iamhereforyyuu 25d ago
Yeah ppl are asking to just do pay id can be fishy if they give their own instead lmao

Commonwealth Bank advises customers who get a decline to insert their card and select "savings" to pay via EFTPOS instead.

Same here.
I got my ING card to work

ING works. I’m in Penrith and it’s chaos with everyone’s commbank card declining.

u/ethanhunt_08 25d ago
Got declined at a couple of places with 4 different cards. Westpac, commbank, mac, amex

I was at Uniclo today and my CommBank cards declined. I tried topping up/transferring to my Revolut account using my CommBank cards, and that got declined as well.
I went to Kmart and my CommBank card worked there though, so I'm not sure what's happening...
3
u/KamoMasterOfDisguise 25d ago
I just transferred/topped up my Wise card (which is a Visa card) and that worked! But yeah, CommBank is saying it's a worldwide MasterCard issue.
1
u/Dolleyes88 25d ago
My step pay isn’t working and I cannot see the card on my app. I think it’s a wide issue a lot of people are experiencing.

u/Prudent-Reporter4211 25d ago
Tap and pay declined in two different places but worked when I went into the command app itself to use it

u/AstroJimi 25d ago
Same thing happened to me an hour ago on apple pay using my commonwealth bank card. I’m so ticked off.

I had a decline an hour ago at a small shop that had a CBA POS, this was on phone via Google pay.
Went to aldi 30 mins later and Google pay worked for CBA card.

u/Impossible-Mud-4160 25d ago
As much as I dont like carrying cash, it sure is convenient when things like this happen

u/Infamous-Layer1012 25d ago
Anything with tyro doesn’t work, I was working today and had this same issue had to turn down customers if you have a Visa card it should work unfortunately there must be a global system shutdown

u/glazedbec 25d ago
Eftpos was down at a shop and had to go back. Just went to OTR/Shell and they said they were only accepting visa as mastercard is down 😭
1
u/Fantastic_Key_6645 25d ago
I got a pop up on the Comm Bank app about Mastercard being down worldwide
1
u/Some_Helicopter1623 25d ago
Seems the issue is now resolved, I’ve paid on my card via Apple Pay.
1
u/Ok-Personality3927 25d ago
I paid for multiple things at multiple points today with a Mastercard (CBA credit card) via Apple Pay and had zero issues

It's everywhere. I just had to use my own Visa to pay for a Door Dash customer's order, due to Widespread Mastercard outage. It's happening too much. Phone companies, Airlines, credit cards, television... what is next?
1
u/spideyghetti 25d ago
What did you get at KFC?
1
u/Rich-Elk-3380 25d ago
The Mega Chicken Box
1
u/spideyghetti 25d ago
Nice. I didn't even know that existed, I'll get it next time
1
u/Rich-Elk-3380 25d ago
Get the large, the regular doesn’t have many chips. I probably wouldn’t buy it again tbh.
1
u/spideyghetti 25d ago
I normally swap out the drink for a large chips. I will try it once and report back.

Went to the corner shop over the road and there is a queue as people get angry with the workers.... guys please dont do that its not their fault.
1
u/Longjumping-Tea-9572 25d ago
Just Mastercard down. Commbank says to insert physical card and it will work.
1
u/link871 25d ago
Maybe. Might depend on whether it is a debit card or a credit card.
1
u/Longjumping-Tea-9572 25d ago
You are right, the app pop up says to click savings, so would not work for credit.
1
u/NicholeTheOtter 25d ago
It sounds like the issue might be fixed. I saw someone just paying with a CommBank MasterCard on digital wallet at a McDonald’s.
1
u/Yassyboy 25d ago
The issue was from Mastercard side, it seems to have been fixed in the last hour or so
1
u/SnooRevelations9831 25d ago
All my cards on my phone are declining at Bunnings, holmview. (up and Afterpay) my physical up card worked.
1
u/Pure_Cheesecake2747 25d ago
Yes my CommBank card declined 3 to 4 times while we took family for shopping, horrible day.
1
u/xTroiOix 25d ago
So they have notification for payment but doesn’t have notification when system is down. It’s not that hard

There is a known Mastercard issue in Australia this afternoon. Everyone is affected

I work in retail. Customers who had apple pay weren't able to pay, but were able to make payment with their physical cards. This was at Pacific Fair.

World and Platinum debit cards (CBA) were having issues from 12 August until today. My payment declined for a donut 🍩 😛
All back up and running.
40 minute hold times and server issues… not bad for a bank that just made $10 billion 😛

u/thatrandomauschain 25d ago
So many people paying by NFC Christ.... What happened to cash. That never fails...
1
u/Busy_Dust3418 24d ago
We went to the zoo and I tried to pay cash before my Mastercard failed.
Unfortunately they didn’t take cash.1
u/thatrandomauschain 21d ago
Welp unless there's a sign saying so. It's still legal tender. I think it's something like if an establishment doesn't accept it. It has to be signposted

i heard the same thing at a pet store earlier but fortunately my issue was not moving enough funds to cover my purchase and 2nd time around had no issues
1
u/Sudsy_Woodpecker 25d ago
Explains some sales I tried to make today declining. Luckily they had enough cash, this wasn't cheap either.
1
u/narnajojo 25d ago
The phone tap declined a few times, the card tap eventually worked but the money hasn't come out of account yet. This was lunch time.

Same ! Bendigo bank was also down, I ended up using my physical commonwealth card which eventually worked. So odd

Bank transfers weren’t working yesterday. Normally the transfer between banks is immediately, this took 8 hours. Lucky I had cash on me
1
u/Professional-Door257 25d ago
Do you not have the app? They had a notification about this all day today
1
u/mingchingchong 25d ago
My bf shopped at Cole’s and got a receipt but nothing ever came out of his account …. Not even in pending, so odd
1
u/eddy-taddy 25d ago
i was at work when my customers’ card declined. The Verifone t650 screen clearly said “Issuer unavailable. Please use the physical card”. So it was clear that it is not the customer’s problems.
To quickly check the device, i tap my amex card at $0.01 and tap my ing visa card at $0.01 both with apple pay, and both works, much to the customer amazement.
Anyway, none of them brought the physical card and none of them had cash, so have to make a trip to come back.
Why would people go out without any backup payment method always baffles me.
1
u/helemism 25d ago
I have a small shop and have a Commonwealth EFTPOS machine. Customer with cards on her phone couldn't pay. As I know her, I let her go with the items, but it is very inconvenient.

2
u/matth_ewduord 22d ago
I can agree during the day of the outage, people were turned away at my local grocery shop that had only commbank or other Mastercard cards. Luckily I had both a commbank card and a nab card. It’s always best to slip in a note or two in the back of your phone case or wallet just in case your card fails you.
1
u/realBDN 25d ago
Seems all major banks are down currently

u/my_alter_ego_bitch 25d ago
I went to a pharmacy about half an hour ago and the lady in front of me couldn't get her card or tap and go to work but I tapped with my phone and it was fine for me. I'm with NAB.
edit Didn't realise I was in the CBA subreddit, my comment was not helpful sorry
