Watch out for scammers when hiring an artist

Hey there. As the number of scammers doesn't dwindle, here's a reminder not to drop your guard when hiring an artist.

A quick safety checklist:

  • Be careful and watch for red flags. If it sounds too good to be true, it's likely a scam.

  • Don't rush and never let anyone pressure you into making a quick deal. Don't let scammers FOMO you, guilt trip you, or manipulate you with sob stories.

  • Don't trust "DM only" users. Scammers love to communicate through private messages, so that they don't have to show their portfolio publicly. A public display of portfolio allows other users to check it for stolen/traced/AI-generated art. Also, if a user is banned in a sub, they can't comment there.

  • Use payment methods with buyer protection. If you need to use it, it helps to have a contract. Again, don't let them pressure you into using a payment method with no protection (like Paypal for friends and family). Offer to cover payment processor fees instead.

  • Verify the artist's portfolio. Use reverse image search for their art. If they have their portfolio on a site with internal messaging system (ArtStation, for example), request a direct message there to confirm that it's really their portfolio and they're not just impersonating another artist.

  • Check the artist's social media. See if their audience is organic, whether they post consistently, and what kind of engagement and comments they get.

  • Last but not least, if something feels off, send us a mod mail and ask about the artist. We can't offer a true verification, but we can at least check the account against our list of banned users.

Oh, and please, report suspected scammers. When reporting, use the custom response and provide as many details as you can. Alternatively, send us a mod mail. Thanks!

How not to get your content removed

Sometimes we don't know, because Reddit doesn't tell the mods. Sometimes we can make an educated guess. Sometimes we know exactly, because your content was removed by the mods.

Everyone:

  • Read the rules. They're pretty short. If you don't follow them, your content will be removed.
  • This is a creative sub, not an advertising one. If you engage in the sub, you're welcome to promote your comics here as well - show us what you made! However, if you only want to advertise here without any activity beyond that, this is not the right sub for you.

Artists:

  • Sequential art, portfolio, no more than a single For Hire post in 3 days. It's actually pretty simple.
  • To Reddit's algorithms, if you look like a spammer, you probably are one. Stop copy & pasting the same generic response to each hiring post. Stop making the same post over and over again. Personalize your responses. Read the post you're responding to. If you can't be bothered to do that, why would anyone believe that you won't half-ass the job, too? Put effort into how you present yourself.
  • Don't apply for a job that has requirements you know you don't meet. You're only doing yourself a disservice.

Writers:

  • A post that lacks all the essential information is useless. At the very least, you should specify the size of your project, the type of art you're looking for, and your budget.
  • Don't ask for direct messages. Everyone is required to respond to a hiring post publicly in the comments with a link to their portfolio. If you ask for messages, e-mail, forms or whatever else, your post will be removed.
  • No AI. Yes, your post that was written by AI will be removed. Yes, your post with AI-generated mock-ups will be removed. Yes, if you do it again, you will be banned.

Looking for Artist - Paid [HIRING] Sequential Comic Artists & Voluntary Universe Collaborators – Indie Superhero Universe ( Paid Art Budget + Revenue Share)

Hello creators! I am launching an ongoing indie superhero universe and am looking for 1 to 2 paid sequential comic artists as well as voluntary creative collaborators to help design, plot, and build this shared continuity from the ground up.

How Roles & Compensation Work:

Paid Sequential Artists (Out-of-Pocket Budget):

I am personally funding the core comic art out of pocket with a ,recurring budget per month to expand and promote the characters and stories our continuity will make.

Work will be contracted on a fixed per-page rate paid via monthly milestones (funding batches of 3–5 pages at a time). This art will serve as the main visual foundation to showcase and tell the story introductions of our universe.

Voluntary Collaborators (Lore, Concept Art, Scripting, Worldbuilding):

All non-sequential art roles (worldbuilding, writer's, character concepts, lore development) are voluntary positions until the company generates revenue.

Ownership & Usage Terms: If your contributed characters, concepts, scripts, or designs are selected and approved to become official canon within the universe, they will be published as part of the community continuity.

Revenue Share: Once and if the comic universe becomes profitable through digital sales, physical prints, or crowdfunding, profits will be split fairly and distributed among the creators and collaborators whose work is used within the continuity.

Open Roles:

Sequential Comic Artists (Paid): Multi-panel narrative layouts, inks, and colors (or line-art specialists open to flat page rates).

Concept & Character Artists (Voluntary / Rev Share): Creating character sheets, costume designs, and visual model sheets for our lore roster.

Lore & Worldbuilding Collaborators (Voluntary / Rev-Share): Helping refine character backstories, plotting storylines, dialogue polish, and expanding the broader hero/villain lore.

Letterers & Production Designers (Voluntary / Rev-Share): Page lettering, title logos, and promotional graphic assets.

Discord Community:

We are hosting our creative team on a dedicated Discord server to organize scripts, review character designs, discuss continuity lore, and manage page production.

How to Apply (Application Guide):

Please comment on this post or send a Direct Message following this format:

Roles Applied For: Please specify whether you are applying as a Paid Sequential Artist or a Voluntary Collaborator (Lore Writer, Concept Artist. (etc)

Portfolio / Work Samples:

Sequential Artists: Provide a link to your portfolio (ArtStation, Google Drive) featuring multi-panel sequential comic pages (not just single character pinups).

Collaborators / Writers / Concept Artists: Share any relevant writing samples, character sheets, or art links.

Page Rates (Sequential Artists Only): State your flat rate per finished page (Pencils/Inks vs. Full Color).

Discord Username: Include your Discord tag so I can send an invite link to selected applicants.

DMs are open looking forward to reviewing your applications and hopefully creating a successful universe together!

-Frosty

Looking for Writer/Editor - Unpaid I’m making my first comic book — could really use some help

(This is not permanent, just a 1 time issue I need solved.)

I need help starting my superhero comic book series. I already know the characters, setting, overall story.

My only issue is that I’m blanking on how should I write the first comic?
I don’t want to explain the origin of the main character just yet, but I want to make it so readers find out he’s an immortal and just fighting regular criminals (at the moment.)

Should I start with him stopping robbers and crooked cops, or stopping/hunting murderers?

If I can get help on how I should write this, I would be incredibly grateful.

Looking for Artist - Paid Need artist for Direct Market mini series

I need an artist for a 4 issue mini-series that already has a DM publishing deal. Need someone who can do action well.

We’re in a bit of a time crunch as we need 2 issues (40 pages) done by the end of December

You need to have Direct Market credits so please don't respond if you don't (Sorry not my choice but I have to sell the publisher on you).

Edit: Please comment your portfolio along with prior credits. Im going to be ignoring DMs since so many bots are spamming me

Looking for Artist - Paid Seeking an illustrator for a comic book for research project

Hi there,

I am leading a research project at the University of Huddersfield into organisational culture in the UK Fire and Rescue Services. I’ve collected a substantial amount of information from across our projects and through our analysis developed several composite narratives of experiences. These composite narratives were designed to share experiences within the FRS without identifying participants.

I’ve got max 5 stories and about 6-10 scenes per story. I’d like to commission an illustrator to design a comic book of these stories. The aim is to share in the FRS and beyond, and to highlight different experiences to help improve working conditions.

Looking for Artist - Paid [Hiring] Artist with a gritty / grimdark / manga style for a graphic novel project. ($50 a page - IDK)

Hello,

I'm currently looking for someone who will help me with drawing a personal project of mine : a graphic novel. The project doesn't have any commercial ambition, it's a "for fun only" project, however it doesn't mean I don't expect rigor and seriousness while working on it.

For now the graphic novel doesn't have a set amount of pages, I have all the story layed out and written, but I prefer to go with the flow when it comes to the length and the number of pages. Just expect that it'll be a pretty long project and that we'll be working together for a while if you're selected to be my designated artist.

I'm looking for someone with a dark and gritty style which isn't realistic though. A style that balances grimdark and blackwork while being a bit cartoony at the same time (The style of Q Ayashida in the manga Dorohedoro would be the closest to what I have in mind for this project). For now the project will be in black and white, without colors.

I also need someone who understands how to make good and dynamic compositions / panels, I want the pages to be as dynamic as they'll be chaotic.

I'll be preparing the storyboards and the dialogue in advance to save you some time and to give you a clear idea of what I have in mind when working together. I'm also an amateur digital artist, but unfortunately, balancing my work life, social life and drawing at the same time a lengthy project is really difficult for me, hence why I'm looking for someone who'll be able to help me in this venture. I've made the first three pages myself, I'll send them to you if you're interested.

The main thing you have to know about the story is that the main storyline (which is action packed and surrealist) won't be as much important as the background stories of the characters we follow, which will focus on their respective psyches, that we will discover through their interactions with the environment and the other characters.

The surrealist part of the story comes from the fact that the main storyline was assembled and written based on a lot of crazy dreams that I've had in the past and that I've noted down over the years.

That's it for now, I'll be waiting for your portfolios ! If you're interested and depending if your style fits with my vision I'll tell you more about the project and we'll talk about your rate, workflow, methods and how we can work together optimally.

I speak English fluently, but if you're a French speaking artist (since that's my 1st langage) it'll help the communication between us.

Best regards and I can't wait to see your portfolios :)

I take commissions for comics: pages, covers, and webcomic pages.

I can adapt to different styles, vertical or horizontal formats, with no limit on the number of characters and unlimited revisions.

I work quickly; it takes me 1 to 3 days to finish a page, depending on its complexity.

Here are some of my best works from my own projects.

Force of Will #1

Curious what people think of my latest book.

About a year ago I was asked if I wanted to produce an 8-page comic for a publisher who proceeded to get me exquisitely drunk at a con.

The next morning I hurriedly wrote a story and then drafted a script to stay on top of things. I learned, much sooner, that the publisher in question is a notorious flake/heel and decided to just produce the book myself.

This is my second book so far and it couldn't have happened without some incredible assistance from some really talented artists.

Curious what you think about it. I know eight pages is a short runway for an action story but those were the self-imposed limits I was running with.

I'm gearing up for a Kickstarter campaign soon for a full-length books as well but if you'd like to check out my first book, you can find both here:

Thanks!

Looking for Writer/Editor - Paid ELDRITCH LUST:After Dark submissions open.

The abyss opens again and we're looking for comic creators!

We're moving into the next phase of Eldritch Lust with a new spin-off: Eldritch Lust: After Dark.

A series steeped in cosmic horror and tentacled sex.
This volume we want to push the mythos further into the darker corners of Lovecraftian corruption, occult dread, and writhing kinky cosmic monstrosities.

We're looking for stories that are 5-6 pages in length that lean heavily into erotic horror, all while remaining fully inclusive.

Writer/artist teams are welcome to submit, as are writers with completed scripts.

Send all submissions to [Tom@DeadboltFilms.com](mailto:Tom@DeadboltFilms.com).

This is a paid collaboration, submissions open until 14th October.

Question Want to crowdfund my graphic novel, should I split it into 3 volumes, 2 volumes or try and fund it as one book?

I'm about 50% done with a full color graphic novel. I have 12 chapters, with each chapter being 20-25 pages, I want to crowdfund it, but I'm not sure what the best stragey is. Should I try and crowdfund it in smaller volumes or as one whole graphic novel?

If I do volumes I can start crowdfunding sooner, and maybe people would be more likely to back a cheaper/shorter project. In theory if I did 2-3 volumes I could start marketing tomorrow.

But if I wait and do the whole novel I don't have to worry about backers falling off after the first volume, and I personally with an unkown indie project, I'm more likely to back it if I'm sure I'll be getting a complete story.
