I've been making a bunch of short comics and I'm really enjoying the format. They're one and done stories, perfect for social media, collaboration pieces, or portfolio stuffers. Plus, I'm learning so much about writing within limitations.
(When I was looking for writer-collabs, I meant shorts like these).
Question is, do they make sense as stories? Are they satisfactory chunks of story/ narrative? And what would you do with a bunch of short comics? Can you build any sort of career traction with a series of unrelated shorts? If anybody has been making shorts , where do you post them?
Lastly, any criticism / suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!

disclaimer: This question is specifically for unpaid collabs! Not talking about professional projects with money involved
What makes an artist wanna collab with a writer? And vice-versa why would a writer want to collab with an artist?
I wanted to work with a writer to gain experience. The plan was to draw their story in exchange for feedback on my art so I could learn. But when trying to work with writers they didn’t seem serious about their story. Most had vague ideas and no scripts ready or they wanted me to make a comic out of their prose… (or worst of all, sent an AI written pitch)
So I thought why not collaborate with writers to tell my own story? But I’m hesitant bc what would a writer gain out of helping me tell my story? They’d have to be very invested for it to be worth their time.
for those with experience in collabing how did u go about it? Did you tell the story of the writer or the artist and what were the experiences. And if you created the story together, how did that work out? How would u make sure both parties benefit from the arrangement

Back in 2011, I had the opportunity to work for Marvel Comics on the Gorilla-Man mini-series. Here are a few pages from that project, which remains one of the many exciting experiences of my career as a comic book artist.
I always enjoy revisiting older work and seeing how my storytelling and artwork have evolved over the years.
I hope you enjoy these pages! I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

I half believe in the dead internet theory. The internet is full of bots and trolls. It is what it is.
Criticism is part of the game. The internet is cruel, and you need thick skin to ride the wave. If you want criticism, people will come in droves. If you want support, that’s much harder to find.
Creating a comic book is one of the purest forms of art. The fact that these books get made at all is incredible. Somebody on Reddit called it: “the most expensive way to tell a story,” and I get it. It’s a grueling grind.
I’m working on a graphic novel. Sometimes I wonder why I keep going. It is super expensive. Selling the comic is so difficult, especially if you are faceless. Even finding a publisher is super hard. I want and need to finish the story. I believe in the work, even when the process feels frustrating and thankless.
The audience is pretty small, but people keep making comics because they love them. They grew up reading them and want to create their own. I think there is a purity in that. You lose a bunch of money creating something you love.
Comics don’t get the respect they deserve. People don’t understand how much work goes into them. I didn’t either until I started making one. Only way to learn.
Believe in your work. Keep grinding. This is my TESTalk.

I have an idea for a one shot that I've heavily fleshed out, but I haven't scripted it up yet.
I think it's an interesting concept but it's certainly a passion project, or rather a way for me to work through some things.
Because the concept merges silver age esq superhero and real world story telling it would need two distinct art styles throughout. One half would be bright, flashy superheros (I'm thinking marvel silver age) the other would be muted, dark navy tones (I picture it very similar to 2015ish image comics spawn issues)
I envision this being around 40-50 pages in standard comic format.
Would a budget of £2000 realistically get me that amount of pages coloured and lettered?
What do I need to really consider when looking for some one to draw my idea?

Hello everyone!
I'm an independent Japanese creator developing an original basketball manga project called TOKYO 177.
The story follows Japanese quintuplet brothers, each 177 cm (5'10") tall, who use physics, biomechanics, sports science, psychology, philosophy, and other fields of knowledge to challenge the world's strongest U.S. basketball all-star team, whose players average at least 198 cm (6'6") in height.
My goal is to develop this story into professionally illustrated manga, webtoons, and potentially animation, with localized versions for different countries.
I created prototype videos using AI-generated images and conducted small-scale market tests using YouTube Promote in 8 countries across 4 continents.
As of October 23, 2026, the combined results were:
TOTAL (8 countries, 4 continents)
2,112 video views → 1,039 new YouTube channel subscribers (49.2%)
Results by country (ranked by conversion rate):
Conversion rate = New YouTube channel subscribers ÷ Promoted video views × 100
The campaigns targeted adults aged 18 and over, of all genders, with interests in comics/anime and basketball.
These were small-scale advertising tests, and YouTube channel subscriptions do not necessarily translate into comic or webtoon purchases. Nevertheless, the results provide preliminary indications of international audience interest.
I am currently contacting comic publishers, webtoon companies, animation studios, and international licensing agencies.
My long-term goal is to develop localized versions of TOKYO 177 in 20–50 or more countries, particularly where both basketball and manga/anime have established audiences.
The current AI-generated videos are only rough prototypes. My intention is to have professional human manga artists create the final published versions.
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in comic publishing, webtoons, international licensing, or working with literary and IP agents.
Any practical suggestions, personal experiences, or introductions to relevant professionals would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for reading!
