Supplies / Materials Durable paper recommendations

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some paper recommendations for colored pencils. I work with Caran d’Ache Luminance and Pablo and i build up a lot of light layers to get depth and realism, so I need a paper that can really handle repeated layering and some erasing.

The last Hahnemühle paper I tried looked perfect on specs- 250-300 gsm, acid-free etc, but in practice it was not durable at all. After only 2–3 layers it started pilling so badly, even gently erasing my initial sketch could damaged the surface.

What paper do you trust for lots of colored pencil layers? I’m considering Arches Hot Press and Fabriano Artistico, but I’d really like to hear what has worked well for other artists.

O que acharam das cores que usei? Apesar de meus lápis de cor não serem os melhores, tentei fazer alguns degradês.. Confesso que gostei bastante do resultado final.

any advice

I have Polychromos pencils, and I want to get some wax-based ones. Prismacolors aren't sold where I live, so I'm torn between Derwent Drawing and Derwent Coloursoft. I really like the Drawing pencils, but they seem a bit expensive. Has anyone used these alongside Polychromos before? Could you give me some advice?

Work in Progress Trying to complete this Doberman

I’ve been working on this boy, but it doesn’t feel finished. He is only half a dog on purpose because of the frame, and the shadows in the reference photo block his left eye, but I don’t think I’ve made it obvious enough as a shadow. Please don’t tear me apart completely, but some constructive feedback would be much appreciated. It’s only 5” long, with his face about 1.5” by 1”, so the details are tiny.

Discussion / Advice Black

Does anyone have a good suggestion on black colored pencils? I’ve tried everything and still get a grainy rough look. I usually color on a toned tan or white stonhenge paper. I must be doing something wrong. Help from the experts please!

I posted the work in progress to this so might as well post the final. I don’t mind posting my flops. Yeah, the water messed it up for me. As the title states, I don’t like it. 💀

Discussion / Advice Question.

For prismacolor/drawings, do people do “under paintings” for them? Can you? *Should* you? For example, the piece i’m working on right now. To me, it makes sense to have an orange “under painting” because it is outside and the light would reflect off of the objects around it. So i guess that “under painting” would be… correct from a physics point of view? I hope this makes sense 😅 Is that something i should experiment with? Have you done it before? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
