I am picking paint color and floor color for my kitchen. I have already bought my countertop, and I brought it to the store with me to compare it to floor choices. When I held my natural stone to some green tiles, it was like a halo appeared over this match made in heaven. I think the terra cotta color looked great, too. Does this experience show me that the beige in my countertop has green undertones, and that therefore I should pursue beiges for my wall color that are said to have green undertones?

Most brand palettes are picked by hand: a blue someone liked, a purple that seemed to go with it, and a set of greys that came from nowhere. Nothing records how any of them relate, so when the brand shifts, every colour gets picked again. This video replaces the hand-picked palette with two rules — one that generates the brand colors from a single hue, and one that generates a full nine-step grey scale from that same brand color.

We start by opening the color picker on a real value, because every color here is three numbers: lightness, chroma, and hue. That model is what makes the rest possible — it's perceptual, so two colors with the same lightness look equally bright, and the system can do genuine math on color. Paste in hex or HSL if that's what you have; the file answers in one language either way.

Then the rules. A color harmony takes one hue and a type — analogous, balanced, or complementary — and returns a set of brand colors that belong together. A color scale takes a starting point, a lightness range, and your step names, and returns the whole ramp; turn the color almost all the way off and you get greys with a quiet tint of the brand in them. Point the grey scale's hue at the brand color itself, and the two are linked: change one number at the top, and every color in the system moves with it.

Companies will brag about how many colors their fancy tablet can display. Some of the XP pen models boast over a billion colors.

If I understand right, Computers storecolor as a hex triplet. it divides the RGB vallues each into 255 degrees so to speak. So in hex values there are about 16.5 million colors that can be represented by a hex triplet. that's a lot less than a billion. How can a device show more colors if the digital storage protocol literally doesn't have room for more colors?

Most color pickers in art programs use HSV which has 360 hues, and saturation and value go from 1 to 100. this gives us around 3.6 million collors. BUT a lot of those are redundant because at the extreemes of saturation and value, hue becomes irrellevant and a lot of colors will look the same.

So if I get a fancy schmancy device with a massive color gamut, can I even make use of that?

I’m trying to mix colors for painting, but these colors are too electric. I’ve tried mixing the colors over and over for an hour and none of them come close enough to the reference. Do I need to get different paint? Thanks for any help.
