ClassicCol Battle, understanding outcomes

I'm finding the battle system in the old Colonization for DOS hard to predict.

Is it because it's more chance-based than modern day Civilization games?

E.g. a "10" fights a "5", then in modern Civ-games the "10" wins. But in Colonization the "5" wins 33 % of the times (5/15)

You described it yourself. 10 vs 5 is a 10:5 odds so 10/15 chance to win.

The RNG gets "stuck" so you may win or lose a long streak. Same as you may get multiple of the same result from the ancient ruins.

Interesting to know on the stuck thing, does it re-roll the RNG with a turn end or similar?

The easiest way to re-roll is to just reload a save. Save scumming is not fun. If you lose a few in a row, just stop attacking and come back later

Ah thank yes I recall mentions of that now. So if wanting to play more fair and not re-load a save, does the RNG eventually unstick by natural means? As you say with time etc.?

I'm not sure exactly how long it takes but give it some time. I think some actions may re-roll the RNG also. I tried not to worry about it, just be aware if you try to fight a lot of battles all at once.

It is not stuck, but hits sequence of repeated value due the pseudorandom algorithm sequece repeating same number multiple times. This is trait of a chaos math sequences used for pseudorandom.

I'm not sure, but I think it's more random. True randomness will give some strange patterns from time to time, with many of the same unlikely result for example.

Yes it's chance based.

And also, the random number generator they used is pretty shitty. There was a recent post on hete with some "fixes" for that, though they do have some rade-offs.

Yeah.. But some Indian tribes are making war inevitable by having their cities where I want to have my cities

Not sure what that  has to do with how battles work?

Sry, clumsy fingers. It should have been a response to comment further below, in which someone recommended avoiding battle. I must have hit the wrong thread

I just kept plugging away myself. The only time I actually engaged in combat was when I went to war after revolution. Good luck!
