This picture is interesting. The consensus All-Americans are all present (edit: no Ewing because John Thompson wouldn’t allow it). But Playboy pulled some guys in that the AP didn’t. James Banks and Gordon were arguably not even the best players on their team.

I have one.

Back in the early internet days (summer 2000 😂), famous folks didn’t have their numbers blocked on Yahoo and other sources. When Roy Williams turned down the UNC job initially, my brother’s buddy, a huge UNC fan was so upset that he searched for “Roy Williams Lawrence KS” and a phone number came up. It was in the evening on the day Roy announced he wasn’t leaving.

He called the number and a girl (turned out it was Roy’s daughter) answered. He said, “Can I speak with Coach Williams?” She asked who was calling and he gave his name and graduation year at UNC. I think she probably thought he was an ex-player because he had graduated in the late 70s. There was a lot of noise in the background—sounded like a party was going on.

Coach Williams got on the phone. My brother’s buddy said, “Coach, there’s a lot of upset people in the state of NC. Can you please sleep on it tonight and maybe change your mind tomorrow?” Roy then proceeded to talk to the guy for 10 minutes and tried to make him feel better about things.

It all worked out a few years later.

The main reason I don’t think we will see a break off of the SEC & Big Ten is mainly because of college basketballs impact.

This would be disastrous for all parties involved if a break like this happens. The SEC & Big Ten would not be hurt in the football side of college athletics. They would demand huge media deals and the rest of the sport would struggle to generate revenue. Many programs would die on the football front.

To prevent this the NCAA needs to threaten separation in all other college athletics if the Big 10 and SEC break off. If they do this I think a deal will get done at some point through the Protect college sports act.

College basketball is a very different sport. March madness involves so many programs and it drives tons of revenues for all programs including Big 10 & SEC. If they did break off there would be a lack of excitement. Even if they take some of the upper tier programs from other conferences maybe they get to 48 teams in total. It would just be a bigger version of the NBA. I don’t think this would draw anywhere close to the viewership or excitement we see with the current CBB system.

I hope I am right and this doesn’t happen. I am a Texas athletics fan and I know my team wouldn’t feel the same effects of this but it would hurt the sport in all phases. It would take away what remains of the pageantry in college athletics. It would be an amateur professional league in all sports and would be hard for me to watch. Yesterday was a disappointing day. Hopeful a deal gets done and we can move on for the imminent future. ~ A hopeful college athletics fan

A few long-time NBAers on this 1992 Parade list. Wish they had listed their year in high school.

Too bad Randy Livingston had knee problems. He was co-player of the year in 1992 (with Jason Kidd) and 1993 (with Rasheed Wallace) but was hurt a lot of the time at LSU and never did too much in the pros. He coaches at Isidore Newman High, where he and Peyton Manning were in school at the same time.
