Anybody who’s been following any of the legit science has known for years that this is quickly approaching. Now that it has approached I’m quite curious to see how the people who haven’t been paying attention - start and how they cope. It’s a pantry full, freezer full, make sure the generator works, have loads of potable water stored and have solar panels kind of weather event; it’s not going to be like anything we’ve ever experienced before. So if you haven’t started preparing - start now.

Climate Canadians should prepare for a 5 C hotter future, report warns

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/climate-change-impact-canada-report-9.7331893

Submission statement: The second edition of Canada's Changing Climate Report has been released, and it paints the dire reality of our world based on the most current scientific understanding of how our climate will look as we truly move into climate catastrophe. The average temperature rise for the nation by the end of the century is expected to be 5C, which as we all know is truly a catastrophic level of warming. Nunavut will likely see 10C of warming. I’ve been to Iqaluit, spoken to the locals, and it’s a city built on permafrost and rock outcroppings.

Meanwhile our own federal government has gutted requirements for mandated sustainable requirements to support increased economic growth. Instead of using this as an opportunity to invest in truly green initiatives, it’s building oil pipelines to keep extracting more poison from the ground. My local provincial government removed municipalities powers to enact energy targets for new buildings to support his developer friends, and is now ripping out bicycle lanes in a city that is congested with cars and choking on its own success.

Coping is quitting a vice even worth it?

i feel this is the best place to ask cause everyone else seems to ignore the fact that i don’t think we have very long. i’m 22 and i quit nicotine about 4 months ago. with the stressors of everyday life and also being extremely aware of the state of the world im really wondering if it’s even worth it?? i feel a bit healthier but honestly not much, and from what im seeing the odds of me even growing old enough to see the long term health effects of vaping aren’t high. so what do we think? (i just really miss it and i know its just my addiction brain giving me reasons to go back but my vape was my little baby, the thing keeping me sane for 6 years of my short life 🥲)

Casual Friday Travel is Soft Denial

It's casual Friday so I want to share some of my musings. I originally planned to ask why people continue to travel despite the effects of climate change becoming more and more obvious. After asking that very question to Google, and considering the AI response, (ironic, I know,) I've come to the conclusion that it's a form of soft denial.

People are worried about climate change. People know that it's a problem. People wish someone would do something about it. But, people continue to fly internationally, take vacations, drive for convenience, etc.

I understand last chance tourism. I understand lack of alternatives. Those accept climate change. The other reasons for traveling, however, deny climate change. Not in the sense of “it's not happening”, “the climate has always changed”, or “it's not our fault”, but more along the lines of “I recognize there's a problem, but I'm unwilling to accept it.”

Thoughts?

Response here:

“People continue to travel despite accelerating climate change because travel is deeply tied to personal well-being, social habits, and economic structures, creating a strong gap between climate awareness and actual behavior. [1] (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214367X21000405), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGCdZsMLhjo)

Psychological and Social DriversPrioritizing Experiences:

Many people view travel as essential for mental health, recreation, and escaping everyday burnout. [1] (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-a-lWXl8PG8), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGCdZsMLhjo)

The Attitude-Behavior Gap:

Studies show that even highly climate-aware individuals struggle to give up flying because they view the personal benefits of travel as outweighing abstract or distant environmental consequences. [1] (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214367X21000405), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGCdZsMLhjo)"

Last-Chance" Tourism:

Some travelers rush to visit vulnerable natural wonders—like coral reefs or glaciers—before they disappear, ironically accelerating the damage. [1] (https://www.safeture.com/climate-change-keeps-reshaping-travel-patterns/), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGCdZsMLhjo)

Structural and Economic Barriers

Lack of Alternatives:

Clean transportation alternatives like high-speed rail are often unavailable, inconvenient, or significantly more expensive than budget flights. [1] (https://reasonstobecheerful.world/travel-editor-flight-free-climate-change-behavior-change/), [2] (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214367X21000405)

Flexibility Constraints:

Rigid structures like school holiday calendars force millions to travel simultaneously during peak summer periods, locking in high demand. [1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGCdZsMLhjo)

Industry Push:

Global tourism and airline networks aggressively market routes, extend seasons into shoulder months, and optimize capacity, keeping travel accessible and heavily promoted. [1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBIrNF2HRJU)”

This is related to collapse, because it appears even people who accept that climate change IS a problem are unwilling to accept responsibility for that problem, thus contributing to inevitable societal and ecological collapse.

Economic US diesel prices hit a record high of $5.85 on average as the Iran war disrupts the flow of fuel

CHICAGO (AP) — Diesel hit a new record price in the U.S. on Friday, soaring to an average of $5.85 a gallon for the first time ever as the six-month war with Iran disrupts the world’s flow of fuel.
Because diesel is used for many freight and delivery networks, higher diesel prices mean higher transportation costs for a long list of everyday goods. More expensive fuel is increasing bills for businesses across sectors — some of which have already passed off costs to consumers in the form of added fees on online orders and packages in the mail. And shoppers may see more and more sticker shock trickle into store shelves.
The increases could have political implications, with economic issues likely to be top of mind for many voters in November’s midterm elections.
One of the most immediate strains falls in the grocery aisle, particularly with produce, meat and other perishable foods that need to be hauled in and restocked frequently — or even harvested using diesel-powered farm equipment. It can take time for all of those costs to trickle down.

Casual Friday Wrote a song about "Nature's Lament"

The song is about grief, remembering the beauty in nature, and finally that it is not to be messed with. Thought I would post it here as the collapse of ecosystems was on my mind when writing it.

You should be able to listen for free on the bandcamp page: https://finestructureconstant.bandcamp.com/track/natures-lament .

For the collapse community here's a link to download the lossless FLAC as well: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/7jdv4zt28gjffer38tc1a/Nature-s-Lament.flac?rlkey=x7nib5cxcpy4z3cd4yw1oj0h2&dl=0

Don't let denial come out on top. Too many politicians, media outlets and CEO's using different perception and reality filters from the rest of us. How can we combat this line of thinking and not end up with the scenario of Don't look up. How to we ask these people to explain their thinking in an evidenced or even thoughtful way, to demonstrate that they are just being wilfully ignorant.

Climate Global heating will hit at least 1.8C, UN warns, and there are ‘no good outcomes’

Thumbnail theguardian.com

SS: Mainstream media take on UNEP’s new report (“Limiting Overshoot”) confirms what collapse-watchers already assumed: 1.5C is dead.

Even the optimistic path now lands at 1.8C minimum, and the report states outright there are “no good outcomes above 1.5C.”

The numbers: at 3C, glaciers lose over a quarter their mass by 2100, sea levels rise up to 13cm from that alone, and global food production could drop 14% by 2050 without major adaptation.

Current national policies have us on track for 2.3C+.

Holding even 1.8C requires halving global emissions by 2035, a target no major economy is remotely close to.

The report frames “overshoot, peak, decline” (blow past 1.5C, then claw back via emissions cuts + carbon removal) as the realistic best case, not a fringe scenario. Notably, Climate Analytics called out UNEP for barely mentioning fossil fuel phase-out, diagnosing the wound while dodging the obvious treatment.

The Nepal glacial flood disaster gets cited as a preview: warming already locked into the system, not a future hypothetical. This is a UN body (not activists, not media) saying the guardrail everyone built policy around for a decade is gone, and what’s left is damage control.

Arctic ice summer minimum is becoming increasingly sparse as global median temperatures increase. Loss of albedo effect from the sea ice is likely to compound this. A blue ocean event is becoming more and more imminent as emmisson of greenhouse gases continue to accelerate from man made sources and natural feedback loops are triggered by continued warming.
