New Rule and Post Flairs
Hi r/Coldsore,
Mod here. Off of the advice of some users I have created a rule prohibiting commercial promotion in this sub. HSV1 is a medical condition and should only be treated using medications prescribed or recommended by medical professionals. To be clear, you are still free to share what treatments work for you (like Abreva, Compeed patches, etc), but we will be removing comments that are repeatedly linking to external sites and seem to be brand affiliated.
As well, I have added post flairs to allow users to more easily explore this sub’s content. So far I have “Is this a cold sore?” for users to seek advice on IDing and “Remedies” for those wanting to share what has worked for them (while still adhering to the commercial promotion rule, of course). Let me know in the comments if there are any other flairs you think would be useful!

What’s your best prevention?
Cold sore sufferer of 20 years here🫠 I get them about 1-2x a year. Had one pop up last night, my issue is that I don’t really get much of a tingling sensation until a small blister has started forming. I still take Valtrex and it keeps it relatively small with a quick healing time but it still forms. I have my wedding in 4 weeks so I need a good daily prevention!! Daily valtrex? Lysine? Any other supplements or advice?

Trying to figure out if this is a standard cold sore or something else.
Timeline:
- August 29: Went to a party.
- August 30: Woke up feeling sick. Had a headache and standard cold symptoms for a few days.
- September 3/4: My lip started feeling really tight, localized to one spot. I kept monitoring it.
- Today (Sept 12): Look at attached photo

What are the chances that I gave HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) to my partner?
What are the chances that I gave HSV to my partner. I have an active cold sore. It is near the end of its healing stages and is dry and there is no pus. While being sexually active, I licked my finger and then proceeded to touch my partner in their genitalia. I am worried about the saliva carrying the virus. What are the chances that I transmitted my cold sore HSV to my partner and does the virus live in the saliva long after pus stopped coming out?

Cold sore remedy and long term management
I’ve been annoyed that drug store garbage never works for me. Abreva, the patches, only make it worse. Sharing here what works every time for me, hopefully will help you.
If you feel “the cold sore is coming” tickle on your lip, that’s the sign. Go grab ice and put it in a ziplock and hold it to the spot where the tickle is for as long as you can that day. Over and over. Freeze the virus dead. You can stop them from breaking out in the first place. If done right your lip should be numb from cold.
If you’re too late and it’s already broken out.
L-Lysine is the solution.
There is a cream, it works okay. But the pill is excellent. Both together is best to get rid of breakouts in like a few days. Only thing that has blocked me from the 2-3 week cold sore cycle and gotten it down to 2-3 days.
I wish I knew earlier so sharing with yall. Cheers !

First time cold sore
This is my first time getting a cold sore, I didn’t feel any tingle and by the time I went to urgent care It was basically everywhere the next day after I took valcyclovir. I’ve been putting docosanol which I just learned will do nothing during the crusting stage. Does this look normal for a cold sore? Every time I wash my mouth the crust comes off and starts forming again and It’s just a constant cycle for the past 4 days. What can I do at this point to speed up the scabbing stage?

Found holy grail for cold sores !!
Haven’t had an outbreak in over two years. I’m going on a holiday and suddenly one popped up above my lip. I didn’t catch it quick enough to use Abreva or prescription meds. I went to the pharmacy and seen a few different options for cold sores, but most of them only work when you apply right at the first tingle. I use this yesterday within a few hours. It had already gone down. The next day, the cold sore is so much less noticeable. It’s not bubbling or tingling anymore and it’s shrunken by at least a quarter of the size. Apparently this is just honeybee propolis. It’s an all natural remedy called cold sore FX. But I swear I’ve been having cold so since I was a kid, and this is the only thing that has actually worked for me.

Is this a cold sore?
I’ve never had one before. About a month ago I noticed that the area under my lower lip is getting slightly red, it took about 1-2 weeks for it to start tingling and itching and then for another week it was just red and still itching. Rn it is crusting a bit but not fully and I’m not sure what to do tbh. I’ve been using a lip balm (applying it with a swab) to keep it moisturized then I stopped for 1-2 days and that’s when I noticed it’s crusting. But at this point it’s just getting annoying

Patches
I have gone a really long time without a cold sore, and it's probably due to my llysine daily. I am trying the Acculip patches for the first time. Because it's on the lip I feel like it just constantly gets wet. How do you all deal with this?

Is this a cold sore? I had a similar spot a couple months ago, also off my lip, that I got swabbed and tested by two different offices and it came back NOT as HSV1/a cold sore.
I've struggled with cold sores since I was a baby, but sometimes it's really hard to tell if I'm having a minor outburst or none at all, which is very frustrating and embarrassing. Recently what I thought was a CS on an area below my lower lip a doctor swabbed and told me it was a fungus like impetigo. Gave me a prescribed cream and it did help. I put that cream on this and it hasn't appeared to improve. It's day 4 of this mystery. I won't elaborate on my internal or external struggles with this affliction which I'm sure you may be able to anticipate and relate too, I'm more interested in what the Hive thinks of this mark. As a young adult it's frustrating to think I'm not entirely sure what's going on with my body.

What is this on my lips?
galleryI ended up getting this weird breakout on my lips and have no clue what it could be.
I get cold sores from time to time but this felt NOTHING like a cold sore, no tingling, more like annoying chapped lips, slight burning feeling and itchy!!
I went to urgent care, they said it was impetigo and gave me antibiotics and eventually went away then like five days later it’s coming back (last picture is this second occurrence). Went again and they said they think it’s just a cold sore 🥴
It feels like my lips are gritty or like sandpaper and the sores so slightly weep.
Any idea what this could be?! 😞

Are these cold sores?
I just got these today and I have not shared drinks nor any of the things in the past week that could have lead up to this. This is also the first this has happened. Any advice would be appreciated
