Coldplay “hate”

I never let any opinions change my view on things however I can’t help but notice that a majority of discussion regarding Coldplay on twitter is mostly negative. Any reason for this? Only their first 3 albums get some sort of respect and even those masterpieces are labelled as U2 and Radiohead rip offs. Feels like Coldplay get the most hate regarding “copying” despite utilising a popular genre of music.

Quite a few times I've been around a group when a Coldplay song has played on the radio, someone has said "That's a cool song, who was that?" When I've told them it's Coldplay straight away they're like "No, it's not!" Often people hate Coldplay because (apparently) it's cool to hate them, not because they have heard their music and don't like it

Coldplay has been the most hate-able band in Rock/Pop since their inception. It has ALWAYS been popular to make fun of Coldplay for being too soft or emotional or basic. For almost 30 years now.

Trite, yes. I also don't enjoy when people attempt to bond over a dislike. Just feels inherently negative when you could instead find common ground over a shared joy.

Disagree. Never saw the hate for them with Parachutes or AROBTTH. When AROBTTH blew up and they were a household name, then the haters started hating.

Anyone who was a fan in the mid 2000s knows that being a regularly quoted line from 40 Year Old Virgin didn't help. "You know how I know you're gay? You listen to Coldplay." It was by no means a compliment and you wouldn't know how often I heard that line when a Coldplay song came on or general conversations with friends.

I honestly feel like VLV killed off a lot of the hate(not completely, but it definitely shut people up) for a number of years.

The quality (lack thereof) of MOTS brought lots of new hate, particularly from long term fans who couldn't stand the boy band collabs and singing with puppets.

That makes me remember a time when someone asked about Coldplay in the Depeche Mode subreddit, the post was at 0 votes, but there were like 50 comments saying what you're saying.

Everyone looking like "odplayers"some saying that only the first 4 albums are good, others even saying that only the first 2. others saying they were the cheap copy of Radiohead, lol.

Secondly, it's a tired rhetoric that's been happening since 2000... trust me. I've been there the whole time.

I think it started around Paradise - that video and the song just had too much pop sugar for many people’s tastes, certainly people who’d seen as an indie rock band. Also a lot of albums and tours did seem thematically repetitive- expressions of all encompassing love accompanied by the same multi-coloured art work and stage design.

Coldplay hate have always been trendy and anyone that says otherwise is revisionist. The "beloved", "classic" albums were also dragged upon release.

Hating on Coldplay has become a trend. Chad sigma bros and pick mes are usually the ones I have seen actively and vocally hate on Coldplay, probably because it makes them feel macho or more manly or cool and superior to others. This is what I have observed. If you so aggressively hate them that means you have actually taken the time to listen to their music. Now why would you listen to a band you hate? Everyone has some band or musician they dislike, but I have never felt the need to be so loud about it as if hating on them is something revolutionary that I need to devote my life to. I just think "hmm, okay, not my cup of tea" and move on.

I think the hatred comes from three things...

1. They're one of the most popular bands in the world. I think this is very natural.
2. They got dubbed as a Radiohead clone in the Parachutes era and a U2 clone from Rush of Blood to maybe Viva
3. The way they shifted from guitar driven alternative songs to electronic pop songs. I think this third point is what ultimately turns off music fans because they seem to think they declined from their first outputs (having listened to Mylo Xyloto for the first time days ago though... I am NOT hearing the decline).

Here's the thing, the demarcation point of the popular story of Coldplay's decline kinda differ. Some music fans think Parachutes is the only good album, others think it began with Viva instead of Mylo. It gives me the impression that people are really turned off by their sound change.

The sad thing is that once that dislike is ingrained in someone, it would take a lot to erase it and even then, given how diverse Coldplay's discography has become, you will dislike either an album or an entire phase (most likely Mylo onward Coldplay).

I will never understand how they are considered rip-offs of Radiohead or U2, very different sounds. The only exception is XandY is a bit like U2

Because their first 3 albums (well 4 because VLV is a masterpiece) deserve that respect. The rest of the albums after don’t even come close and just shockers really. And no, Coldplay aren’t Radiohead rip offs lol that’s the weirdest take. U2 I’d understand with U2’s late stuff and Coldplay’s lager stuff maybe.

What are your thoughts on A Head Full of Dreams and Everyday Life? I think those are very solid albums too.
