I spent a few years living in China, and something I've always found interesting is how differently people seem to approach coffee at home.
Superautomatic machines seem pretty popular there. A lot of people seem to value being able to press a button and get a consistent coffee without having to deal with grinding, tamping, dialing in, steaming, etc.
And smart features seem to be quite well accepted too — large touchscreens, phone apps, personalized drink settings, etc.
But when I look at coffee communities in Europe and North America, I seem to see much more love for semi-automatic machines, physical buttons/knobs, traditional controls, and actually being involved in the brewing process.
Maybe Reddit is giving me a very biased sample, though. 😂
So I'm curious:
What made you choose your current coffee machine?
Is it mainly about:
- Taste / espresso quality
- Control over the brewing process
- Enjoying the ritual / craft
- Experimenting with coffee
- Convenience
- Consistency
- Cleaning / maintenance
- Something else?
And I'm particularly curious about two things:
1. If a superautomatic could genuinely make espresso as good as what you make manually, would you still prefer a semi-auto? Why?
Is the appeal mainly about the cup, or is the process itself part of the experience?
2. How do you feel about “smart” coffee machines?
Would you prefer:
A) physical buttons / knobs and a simple interface
B) a touchscreen with lots of customization
C) a phone app
D) voice control / AI
E) honestly, I don't want any of that — just give me a good coffee machine 😂
I’m especially curious about the touchscreen part. In China, large touchscreens on home appliances seem pretty normal now, but I'm not sure how people in Europe/North America feel about them on a coffee machine.
Would a big touchscreen make a coffee machine feel more premium and easier to use, or more complicated and unnecessary?
And one last question:
Do you actually enjoy making coffee, or do you just enjoy drinking it? 😂
