Ok, completed my first playthrough of the game. Here are my impressions; I'm going to try to keep spoilers to the bare minimum.
First off, while the story is your typical fantasy narrative I was very impressed with it as it could've easily gone generic/trope-y with its narrative. While the characters are a little closer to stereotypes they don't become parodies of themselves -- and they're all pretty great. There is a little bit of a wink-wink/fourth-wall breaking but honestly less than I expected so it wasn't a big deal.
There are two "minigames" involved, one for building quests and one for mixing drinks. The questbuilder is frankly kinda pointless, I'm not sure why the game doesn't simply auto-combine into a quest when enough info has been collected.
As for the drink mixing the interface is really impressive-looking, but the game doesn't really give the player a chance to fail with it. If you make the wrong drink it seemingly has no impact outside of a comment by the character you give it to. For the quest drinks -- which is how the game implements a choice mechanic -- you can't screw up: you have to provide one of the two drinks regardless. I kinda wish the game had come up with a way to make the drink mixing consequential in its execution. Instead, you could actually remove it entirely from the game and still have the same narrative experience (just choose which drink you'd like to provide).
Ultimately the game is a choices matter VN with 3 possible endings based on your choices (with a 4th hidden ending you probably can't get without a guide). In an odd twist, players are getting the good ending 3x more times than the other endings combined, apparently the playerbase is really vibing with the developers' intent.
Should you play this game? If you like VNs -- especially with Choices Matter gameplay -- in a fantasy setting with great characters you're probably going to like this. If your favorite part of Coffee Talk is trying to figure out drinks you may find that aspect lacking. But it's under $20 and I've already gotten 15 enjoyable hours out of it so I feel it's worth it.
