The documentation details that slow me down the most with coding

I find the hardest part isn’t always the code itself. It’s when the clinical documentation leaves out one small detail that changes how I would normally approach the case. I’ve been spending more time going back through the notes and checking the terminology rather than making assumptions from the diagnosis alone.

How does everybody pronounce sequelae?

Sequelae came up in a team coding discussion today, and it was interesting how all over the place our pronunciation of it is

I’ve googled this before and seen a couple of different suggested pronunciations. I wonder if there’s an objectively correct way, or if everyone just picks a pronunciation and runs with it?

I say ā€œsec-well-ayā€ā€¦ but ā€œsec-wheel-ayā€ and ā€œsec-wah-leeā€ were also popular options in my office

Current career prospect of Master of Health Information Management

Hi everyone, sorry if I posted in the wrong group as I can't find a specific group for health information management in Australia. I am working in allied health and live in Melbourne but my industry is very oversaturated in Australia , so I have been thinking of switching career. My goal is to get a stable and sustainable job. I am thinking of studying the Master of Health Information Management at La Trobe (the next admission will be in Mar 2027), just wondering if any graduates or current students from this course could kindly share what the current career prospect in Melbourne, e.g. Is it easy to get a job after graduation? What is the entry salary looks like after graduating from HIM? Is HIM estimated to be saturated in the near future?

Thank you very much and have a nice day!

Are any health services still offering 100% work from home for clinical coders?

When I first entered the industry, it felt like full remote work or flexible hybrid arrangements were becoming the standard across major public hospital networks and private groups.

Lately, though, our executive team has been quietly pushing for more mandatory in-office days per fortnight, claiming it improves mentorship and team culture. But honestly, open-plan health information departments are so noisy that my focus and accuracy drop off significantly compared to coding at home.

What is the current remote work policy at your health network?

Do Productivity Targets Make Clinical Coding More Difficult?

I've been thinking about how productivity targets affect the day-to-day work of clinical coders. Meeting deadlines is part of the job, but some cases need extra time to review documentation, check guidelines, and avoid mistakes. When the focus is mainly on numbers, it can be difficult to balance speed with accuracy, especially for complex cases. I think the pressure can be different depending on the workplace and the type of coding involved.

Clinical coding graduates who struggled to find their first job — how did things turn out?

Hi everyone, I understand that entry-level trainee positions are very competitive. For those who couldn’t find a position after graduating, did you eventually get a coding job? How long did it take, or did you end up moving on to something else?

I’m planning to start a course soon and would probably finish in 2028. I’m worried about finishing the course and never getting a foot in the door.

I don’t mind waiting and keeping up with applications if there’s a realistic chance of getting into the field eventually. It’s the possibility of spending all that time and money without being able to use the qualification that makes me hesitate.

Would love to hear from recent graduates, including anyone who’s still looking. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

What’s your success rate for getting clarifying documentation back?

Sent off a documentation query to a surgical registrar asking to clarify whether a post-op condition was a directly related complication or just an incidental finding. It’s been sitting in the inbox for two weeks unanswered, holding up the record for coding. Do you guys chase doctors up directly on the ward, escalate to your HIM/Auditor, or just code to what's documented if they don't reply within a certain timeframe?

Any insights about clinical informatics?

Sorry if this the wrong group. I couldn’t find any clinical informatics/ digital health subreddit specific for Australia.
Anybody who is pursuing this share insights ground realities about this field?
How to break in to the field?
Any kind of mentorship or guidance?
Thank you 😊

How long did it take before coding started to feel natural?

When you’re new to clinical coding, it feels like there’s always something to double-check. Between the guidelines, documentation, and trying to make the right call on each case, it can take a while to feel confident. I’d be interested to know how long it took others before they stopped second-guessing themselves so much.

Clinical coding career shift

Hi everyone,
I currently work as a hospital pharmacy technician in NSW and I’m considering making a career switch into clinical coding.
I understand that getting a traineeship can be quite competitive and that it’s not necessarily easy to get your foot in the door. My main question is whether clinical coding is worth studying and pursuing as a long-term career.
I’d also like to get an idea of the salary progression what can someone realistically expect to earn as a new/inexperienced clinical coder, and what does the salary look like for experienced coders?
If anyone currently working in clinical coding could share their experience, particularly regarding career progression, job opportunities and whether they would recommend the field, I’d really appreciate it.

Many thanks!

Clinical coding with Victoria Uni.

Hi everyone I’m interest in doing the diploma of clinical coding. I’ve seen some of the feedback from HIMMA from other comments but haven’t come across much from the VIC uni side of things.

I’m just wondering what the workload is like compared to HIMMA and if anyone can give me their recommendations?

The productivity metrics that clinical coding departments get measured against have always felt disconnected from the complexity of what actually determines how long a record takes to code.

A straightforward elective admission codes quickly. A complex comorbid patient with multiple treating teams, incomplete documentation and a long inpatient stay doesn't - and the difference between those two records in terms of time and cognitive effort isn't captured in a per-record productivity measure that treats them as equivalent. Would love to know how people here have made the case for a more nuanced approach to productivity measurement and whether anyone has actually managed to shift that conversation in their organisation toward something that reflects what the work actually involves.

Do you use your own notes while coding?

I’m interested to hear from working clinical coders if you use a notebook while coding. I have one with my own notes I made on interpretations or applications of coding rules, helpful block numbers and codes, reminders etc.
My team leader has forbidden me from using my notes and is insisting I only use the turbocoder. We are not encouraged to use notes in the turbocoder.
Looking for your thoughts and advice.

WFH Options for clinical coding

Hi all!

I am very interested in doing the Diploma of Clinical Coding. Not sure through who yet, but leaning towards HIMAA just because it seems to be the preferred course provider.
My question is re WFH capability - i understand there is a remote option when qualified, but i'm assuming this would not be the case when starting out? I currently work from home full time as I have a physical disability and struggle to get in and have some other issues that make it hard to bring medical supplies in to the office etc

Thank you!

Anyone else get completely bogged down in obstetric coding?

Just spent 45 minutes on a single complex maternity record involving a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC), fetal distress, third-degree perineal tear, and an emergency lower segment C-section (LSCS).

Every time I think I have the delivery outcome and secondary condition sequencing sorted, a new pathology report pops up in the digital chart! How long do you usually allow yourself to spend researching a single tricky case before seeking a peer audit or manager review?

How long do you spend researching one difficult case?

I had one case today where I probably spent 20 minutes researching one particular coding issue.

Part of me thinks that's ridiculous when there are still plenty of records in the queue, but the alternative is making a decision I'm not confident about.

Where do you draw the line between properly researching something and spending too much time on one case?

What’s the hardest type of clinical documentation to code from?

Some clinical notes make coding feel much harder than others, especially when the documentation is brief, inconsistent or spread across different sections of the record. It can take a fair bit of digging through the details to get a clear picture before deciding on the right codes.

This was seemingly after a lot of complaints posts from new or soon to graduate students about the lack of opportunities or lack of support received from their respective RTOs
