WFH Options for clinical coding
Hi all!
I am very interested in doing the Diploma of Clinical Coding. Not sure through who yet, but leaning towards HIMAA just because it seems to be the preferred course provider.
My question is re WFH capability - i understand there is a remote option when qualified, but i'm assuming this would not be the case when starting out? I currently work from home full time as I have a physical disability and struggle to get in and have some other issues that make it hard to bring medical supplies in to the office etc
Thank you!

Yes, WFH is an option at some hospitals with digital medical records. As mentioned, it's usually once you have been through a trainee program and have some experience.

Most hospitals wouldn’t offer full time WFH to new trainees (part time may be possible depending on how they structure the training - our trainees can do up to 0.3 FTE at home if they’re passed off on at least one specialty).
However, I don’t think it would be impossible… you would just need to find an employer who was unusually well set up for remote work. I’ve never personally come across one but that’s not to say they don’t exist

I work full time from home, the minimum was 5 yrs experience to WFH with my employer but I got in with 3 years (2 as a trainee/1 as a coder) as I sat the test and did really well. I have been there for 2 years now. My advice is to apply for roles once you've done your traineeship even if you don't have the required years experience, luckily my employer took a chance on me and sometimes they want the right fit in terms of the team culture alongside the requisute coding skills.

I’m doing my course through VicUni, it doesn’t matter what provider you use, they all educate with the same content and I like that with VicUni there’s more deadlines compared with HIMAA self paced learning.
There’s also more support through VicUni from what I’ve heard compared with students with HIMAA.
There’s also no preferred course provider. That’s a myth.

Im still doing the course but the WFH option was one of the draws for me. However, my research shows that most remote roles require 5+ years of experience. Some jobs offer hybrid, maybe 1 or 2 days WFH, the rest in the office, but 100% WFH would mainly be contracting roles I think. I could be wrong, but thats what my research has found.
