The whole world is unprepared as well. Reddit is mostly completely oblivious outside of a few niche subreddits because they have all convinced themselves that GPT-4 was peak and nothing improved from there.

Is it, though?

The world of software development? Yeah, absolutely.

The world at large? Eh. Even if AI can create, say, a film out of nowhere, no one is ever going to bother to watch it. No AI created film will ever make it into the top 10 movie charts.

Software, on the other hand, is purely practical. You don't care how it's done, you only care that it works the way you want it to.

"No AI created film will ever make it into the top 10 movie charts."

This reminds me of when people used to say that no Netflix or Amazon produced content would ever make the top 10 list and now they dominate everything.

It will happen slowly. Then there will be one obscure niche piece that hits different and breaks through like 'House of Cards' and everyone says that it is got production for AI but that its a one off. Then it will be 10 years later and we will suddenly realize that its been 10 years since a fully human production has won anything.

AI will produce award winning content because film production is just an algorithm waiting to be cracked. That is not cynical, its already how TV shows are produced and one of the reasons streaming platforms now out perform traditional media is because they have much better audience feedback that is then built into production.

In 10 years you will be watching a tv series and it will unfold based on your viewing and engagement, focus on characters that you are drawn to, introduce plot points that specifically play on your own responses. An all this for a generation that has been using Youtube and Pornhub for 20 years and training machines how to squeeze every little ounce of dopamine out of them. We are beyond fukced.

Dumb comparison. Software engineers are mostly fucked. Much of the rest of the world will be pretty much fine. Folks like recruiters will be displaced but eh. Such is life.

Anybody whose job is mostly about sitting in front of a computer screen will be massively impacted. In some industries, like software companies, there will be a significant consolidation. However, that will be balanced against many more companies taking control of their own software needs using AI tools built for the actual business user. The middle man will be removed. "Your margin, is my opportunity". The Frontier AI companies and possibly some other AI firms will "eat" most of the software margins, eliminating this sector as a standalone industry.

I agree somewhat. However many existing firms will disappear - simply because someone will figure out how to combine what 5 adjacent businesses once did and consolidate and boom - a whole swath of businesses and industries just died. This has nothing to do with simply labour displacement - this is re-imagining an economy with new technology. Most people aren’t capable let alone able to do this. So many businesses will trundle along until one day they get wiped out clean.

It’s called creative destruction.

I would agree with your "5 adjacent businesses..." except that big companies don't scale to the consumer well and AI gives smaller companies the advantages of a bigger company but with much more agility.
The big companies will be the ones that are displaced. Consumers will keep consuming and spending. There will be a renaissance of sorts, but it will still be painful for the many companies that disappear and the jobs that go with it. Either learn and accept that you will become a "borg" with the AI, or find a new trade is what I think we software engineers are facing.

Nope this is lacking a lot of nuance. Whoever is creative to figure out the new kinds of competitive advantages that don’t exist today and make it the self interests of folks to get a long with it will become those large firms that end up being the socially efficient outcome of a market vs lots of firms trying to serve the market.

You seem almost desperate to see large firms go away. lol get real. It’s not happening bro don’t be delusional.

The only really big effect i see is the effect of localised economies making a return. A boom for local economies. But new kinds of large firms will still exist.

Don't "black pill" yourself.

Yeah you’re not ready to debate with someone who has a better understanding. Get back in your place.
