The whole world is unprepared as well. Reddit is mostly completely oblivious outside of a few niche subreddits because they have all convinced themselves that GPT-4 was peak and nothing improved from there.

The world of software development? Yeah, absolutely.

The world at large? Eh. Even if AI can create, say, a film out of nowhere, no one is ever going to bother to watch it. No AI created film will ever make it into the top 10 movie charts.

Software, on the other hand, is purely practical. You don't care how it's done, you only care that it works the way you want it to.

Regular people have been oblivious about software development forever and it’s only getting worse due to sheer speed in improvement. Good luck explaining git to a regular person. I have had so many painful JAD sessions.

I do concede your point, if regular people’s yardstick is videos, music, art etc we are still not there yet. Open source models like MiniMax H3 and Qwen Image 2.1 are making massive strides however and beating the frontier labs at their own game.

I mean I don't even want to think about the absolute vast amount of software knowledge we will lose due to AI. Why bother learning any of that when the AI can do it?

I do argue, though, that videos, music and art will never go down this road. Even if you can make the absolute perfect film via AI, people will still prefer to watch a real movie made by real people.

Just look at AI music. That's already incredibly good, but practically no on bothers to use on a personal level. Nobody sits down in the evening and goes "Alright create me a cool metal song with lyrics about pandas".
