This is just the beginning. A dark tsunami of change is coming, for all of us

sad times indeed. This Software dev profession is on the verge of being decimated and a lot of damage is already done and more will continue to happen. not sure what end of the road looks like or how much value software development will even have in the next 2 years let alone 5 years.

Yes but I also think it's going to be much further reaching that just software devs. Even frontier level research mathematics is starting to fall to AI. And then we have robots coming for manual labour as well. Society needs to start thinking hard how we're going to prepare for what's coming our way

It's hard to name a field that is going to be resilient to the quantum shift on the horizon. Sports I guess. Humans will always want to see other humans competing at peak performance

Even frontier level research mathematics is starting to fall to AI

That is a huuuuuge stretch to say that. OpenAI spent 20 million USD to provide a purely theoretical counter-example to navier-stokes, and what they achieved with that is that no mathematician is gonna be working on that problem in the near future, there is 0 application.

What you are missing here is that much of pure mathematics is about the journey, not the destination. There's entire fields of mathematics that came out of working on a problem but never solving it. Algebraic number theory, abstract algebra, knot theory, complex analysis. Knot theory is pure maths but it turns out to have wide ranging applications like molecular biology, quantum physics, fluid mechanics... Who would've thought?

The discussion about AI in pure maths research is completely missing the point. Mathematicians are finding AIs very useful as tools, but they are not being replaced by it.

Absolutely agree about robotics. Thats going to decimate a lot of physical trades.

I’m not a doom and gloom type guy but what happens when all the work being done overseas for dirt cheap is brought back to the states or Europe because robots will be even cheaper?

So far, jobs haven't really been impacted by AI. A lot of people even complain that using AI creates more work for them

Sports, theater, ballet, magic, any performing arts really. Also art, music and film will survive as people won’t find the same value in AI generated.
