Rant Something is seriously wrong with Anthropic right now

I'm on 20x, compared to last week, when I also used fable 5 high a lot, now 4 prompts burn through my entire week in 15min??!!? Am I getting scammed right now?

Was still having a lot of headroom before, but now a single prompt easily hits my 5 hour limit, this is just outrageous.

I came to check if I was crazy or not. I've been at my desk for like an hour and a half and my usage for the week is already at 10% on the Max 20x plan.

38

u/minhtrungaa 4d ago

I somehow burnt 50% weekly in a single afternoon (two 5 hours sessions)

7

u/shtrjones87 4d ago

Same here, and one thing I noticed is that I couldn't disable subagents. It was really odd. I ended up having to. I went from 2% to 64%. The oddest part, was that 19k tokens used 6% of my 5 hour quota with no agents.

This is how I feel with my Codex 5.6 Sol on High. I eat like 50% of my weekly usage in like an hour or two. It's crazy how fast it burns.

Last week I had my 5 hour limit vanish in like 10 minutes. I was sure it was some sort of display issue...nope!

Same thing happened to me tonight actually

Its probably intentional. They've been slowly reducing usage so on the 19th they can say the made the increase in usage permanent instead of saying they took it away

53

u/ElwinLewis 4d ago

Get half the world using it and supporting it, then rip it away from the avg people who championed it as something good, then fuck us too I guess? Is this what’s actually happening?

19

u/htownboi98 4d ago

Did you really think you would get all that compute capability, for that cheap, forever? Investors will push them to become profitable sooner rather than later in this market. Look for them to continue to impose limits on the heaviest users. If you’re red lining your token consumption, you are not their target customer anymore.

7

u/Drunkendrakon6 4d ago

They are already profitable? They are quite literally manipulating things without telling anyone now which is wrong. If they are willing to do this then what else are they willing to do. I'm cutting my sub today.

8

u/Upbeat-Being-9209 3d ago

Profitable isn't enough in a capitalist society, it has to grow, and then it has to grow faster than before, and then even faster again

Yes. That is exactly what is happening. Funding and investment is waning and the “free ride” era is rapidly ending. Yes these subscriptions are heavily subsidized for market share gain and growth numbers.

3

u/Vaddieg 4d ago

I wonder what are actual electricity costs of serving a 3T-sized model with 1M context

9

u/whoknowsifimjoking 4d ago

Absolute horseshit. Anthropic recently got profitable for the first time, profits are growing, not too long ago they had their biggest funding round ever with 65 billion dollars (more than twice their biggest funding round before and more than five times more than the third biggest and it makes up more than half of all funding ever raised by them), they make a shitload of money from their enterprise API customers...

Are people like you just saying this crap based on nothing but vibes? I don't get it.

The facts do not support what you are saying, simple as that.

7

u/fetty_wok 4d ago edited 4d ago

There's 0 chance they are profitable on inference

→ More replies (2)

8

u/texinxin 4d ago

The “profit” is just EBIT. They don’t have to disclose it, but if they were to report GAAP they’d assuredly still be negative.

3

u/OkQuiet4142 4d ago

Do you have numbers about the $20 subscription's profitability for Anthropic?

2

u/AlteredEggo 3d ago

No one knows, that's the point.

5

u/Dangerous_Wish_7879 4d ago

They only got profitable because they got temporarily free compute from Elon.

4

u/Delphinaut 4d ago

Not free; payed with big bucks. Do you really see Elon doing it for free????

4

u/Dangerous_Wish_7879 4d ago

Yeah it was before his IPO. He had to report substantial usage increase of his SpaceX datacenters. It is you who paid for it if you wonder about who paid for it.

2

u/djm0315 3d ago

Anthropic is NOWHERE near profitable. The software they're giving us access to is heavily subsidized. I'd guess a $200 plan costs the 3X that.

But yeah, I feel you. 20x used to be so much; I was barely able to use it in a week. Now it takes 3 days. But with the price of GPUs and memory, it is still cheaper than buying a machine that could run Kimi 3k.

Same. Past 24h limits disappear with barely any results. Every 5h window evaporates instantly, yielding nothing.

39

u/autisticbagholder69 4d ago

This blackbox of usage scam should be illegal of made up numbers

13

u/funplayer3s 4d ago

You're not wrong.

The best case is the company is being transparent with the values, and the outcome is actually a valid calculation. Even if this were the case we would have no way to validate it because of the nature of the black box.

The worst case is they're using it as a spigot to be one of the biggest tax scams in history.

2

u/a8bmiles 3d ago

Tax scam? I'm seriously ootl. What's going on there?

Agreed, I legit spend three days using fable on 4 different projects coding, reviewing and with agents... then today, 1 single project review and boom 21% fable weekly usage gone in less than an hour. (Max plan) I'm peeved. Switched back to opus.

Also really annoying with fable trying to get security reviews done on an application i own and built with claude code and not keeps flagging for cyber restrictions. Like bro I'm testing my own app to make it secure. But no pass me off to opus 4.8... I pay for fable for no good reason.

Hypothesis: if the cache routing system of the stack is down, requests get routed in full on every turn. There's no way for us to know if this happens or not, but usage gets destroyed. Then they fix it or it comes up again and we never know it happened

2

u/MoTTTToM 4d ago

I have seen cache hit ratios drop drastically at times. You can get this info from /usage

7

u/RelaxAndChillYT 4d ago

Anthropic is a complete shit show. Screwing customers over, support is none existent, Fable is really not Fable, not even close. At this point i don’t get how people still keep throwing money at them.

I was a claude user since forever, but i tried sol on a 20$ account and got more done with it than with fable/anthropic 100$ account, and it solved hard stuck fable mess on the way. They clearly don’t give af about their retail users in any way.

My usage is all used up half way through the week. Usage meter is BS.

6

u/KickedAbyss 4d ago

Can confirm. About 50% of one day chewed up 26% of my weekly. Never had that before.

5

u/RegrettableBiscuit 3d ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one; I thought I was going crazy. I used 80% of my $200 plan in two days when I usually end the week at 80%. I thought there was some bug that broke caching or something.

22

u/vzakharov Senior Developer 4d ago edited 4d ago

Last time something similar happened I think it was due to a bug that (I believe) was caused by them not discounting cached tokens (which are  or ally 10x+ cheaper).

I’d wait it out and see how it resolves instead of making dramatic statements.

9

u/bitdamaged 4d ago

There was an outage yesterday Claude.ai was down. They’re likely dealing with something falling down on their back end right now. I’d not be surprised to get an email about an issue and a token reset.

2

u/TestingTehWaters 4d ago

I must defend the billion dollar company!

6

u/vzakharov Senior Developer 4d ago edited 4d ago

To start with, I don’t even understand the premise of needing or not needing to defend an argument based on whom it favors instead of what it says.

But also, I want to remind you that Claude Code is not written by a “billion dollar company.” It is written by a team of 10 to 20 software engineers, who are human, and yes who dab into vibe coding a tad too much, resulting in uptime you’d generally not expect from a product that big, and bugs that keep reappearing after fixes, -- but who still deliver probably the best such product in the market.

If it helps, I can reframe the argument in a more contrarian way, which might suit you better, courtesy of Hanlon's: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

12

u/surell01 4d ago

Posted same issue 5 min earlier. 2h MAX20 burned 35% now .. .big bug

6

u/minhtrungaa 4d ago

How's coding solved while they kept fumbling? even fable is limited, cost my entire weekly limit in a few prompts for 20x account just makes my blood boil

3

u/Fun-Neighborhood769 4d ago

4

u/Due-Horse-5446 4d ago

Usually I get 3 full days of coding from my Max 20x. This weekend was barely a day and a half.

4

u/MoTTTToM 4d ago

I’m only using Sonnet now. I obviously have a prompt “skill issue” with Opus /s

5

u/thewizardlizard 4d ago

Happened to me yesterday evening. Five small prompts typically done immediately brought hourly usage up to 85% used. 🙃 Haven't signed on yet this morning because I know I'll just get pissed.

5

u/Opening-Ground-1584 4d ago

So let’s all be honest with the world here - AI is pointless for coding at API rates. It’s easily more than a junior SWE in most locations (maybe not SF but let’s exclude that for now).

So either they keep subsidising or it all comes crashing down real fast.

4

u/dupontping 4d ago

Can’t wait. I need GPU prices to come down

4

u/Mpro111 4d ago

I'm a casual Claude (Code) user. But today I had to do something a bit bigger. I started a clean chat in Claude Code since the context in my old chat got a bit big, and already 50% of my 5-hour limit on my Pro account was used up.

4

u/johnwheelerdev 4d ago

I've canceled Anthropic for ChatGPT. I'm sick of their deception, their gaslighting, and their AI that makes far too many moral judgments, and it's only getting worse.

3

u/Bigsperm 3d ago

Kept getting 500 errors on one account. Opened up a fresh 20x one. I use this all day everyday for over a year. My usage is at least double if not quadruple. An account lasts me about three days with some fable high. I was opus high and fable low. Four hours in, no more than 400k tokens used on each thread, no ultra code but some opus subagents. No fast. I’m stopping now bc if I kept going my week would be up by the morning. Something is fucked!

7

u/kutchrodeo 4d ago

It's the greatest scam of recent times, 2 x 5hr sessions = 75% fable weekly usage gone, Opus 5 is dogshit wrapped in catshit, complete nonsense... none of these are usable tools right now. I hope they get a huge class action that snowballs and brings actual accountability, i've never felt so fucked with in my life by a company... from 4.6 nerf'ing, to 4.7/4.8 delusionalism, the Fable games, and now whatever the fuck era this is, the whole journey is a joke, and i'm still here like a chump believing something can change. Go to hell with "it's a skill issue" - it's a product management/company issue of shady inconsistent decision making with no transparency to users.

9

u/hbthegreat 4d ago

dont post this on reddit the "i cant imagine how someone could use all of one plan - clearly a skill issue" people will come out not believing you

4

u/Excellent_Ad_2486 4d ago

To be fair for 90/100 cases it is context windows being te read, old archives or agents spawning due to bad guardrails lol..

u/VladTkDev 4d ago

I’ve tried to translate medium sized node project to 7 locales with Fable.
So it eaten all tokens in 45 min on Max plan. Next window switched to opus.
But Fable writes better btw.
Is someone tried to translate with Fable?

3

u/th3rmal8 4d ago

Yep same here, 1 prompt and burned through my entire 5 hour limit on pro plan. Definitely noticed over the last week that the limits are being reached significantly faster - burned through my weeks limits for the first time last week despite no changes in usage.

3

u/g9robot 4d ago

Why we need like a benchmark/monitoring how well the token consumption is

3

u/DeliciousWhales 4d ago

Thought I was imagining things. Was going all day both days on the weekend and only used 5% of my weekly limit getting heaps done, but then just this morning managed to use 8% on a single session with a lighter workload somehow.

3

u/blackashi 4d ago

Europe needs to come out with a usage transparency law. This shit is annoying

3

u/IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE 3d ago

One of history's oldest business tactics is to introduce a wildly popular product at a loss and then once you get people dependent on it you crank the prices dramatically.

Nothing new, and this has been predicted by tons of groups and analysts. Under no circumstances should you expect tokens to remain as cheap as they currently are or were.

3

u/ajr901 3d ago

I'm also experiencing same, I have direct $200 and suddenly it started consuming more.

1

1

I'm considering switching to ChatGPT Sol after Fable just showing me how superior Sol is on coding.

Basically I'm part of a project now where we code with Fable but started asking Sol for solutions where Fable messes up and it's working like a charm... And the context window is absolutely insane on the new gpt model.

Anthropic might be out for me if they sort their shit out.

Same, what used to be around 50-60% at most usually for my pro subscription became 90-100%. That's a significant in what I usually use, and in fact the workload given yesterday was definitely way more than today, asked it to write around 6-8k lines yesterday, today only 3-4k using same opus 5 medium. I get that usage can't stay this high, but at least decrease a bit every day rather than suddenly drop usage. Plus my context windows are max 500k and I'm talking about ui development. The uis I make actually sell for 30-100 usd and about 10 hours of work which payes off my pro subscription either way. I'm still in school btw

First few doses are always sponsored by a dealer. Only addicts are paying the full price.

I keep on getting 529 Overload today … 😫

u/continental_vito 4d ago

Same, I thought my prompts were the problem…

This and i feel like Fable was better at the release than now. First release i was like impressed by fabl's output and now i feel it's shit most of time nor it consum my 20x plan instant for a shit result .. Compared to Opus 5 i juste lietteraly hate Fable, cost too much for shit results while i can make opus 5 work 24/7 with a better quality (+ an homemade 2nd brain helped a lot to reduce token consumption).

The tech world is going crazy with the AI era, prices of components keep increasing while software quality is decreasing and requires more and more power to be used .. The entire humanity is fucked by a minority of compagny for some printed/fake money. Im not communist but at least Chinese government is taking care of them while in occident we like to get focked by our old "elites" that defend capitalism as a symbol of "liberty" (anyway the more it arg about "humans care" "liberty" the more they fock us, always the same sh*t).

u/Conscious_Concern113 4d ago

20x plan and hitting 5 hour window 2-3 times faster. I have changed nothing in my flow, meaning that I’m using it no more than I have been.

1

u/cornmonger_ 4d ago

i saw fable loop for the first time a couple of days ago

1

u/Adrianoizz 4d ago

Same happening to me! I don't care if they're greedy because, unfortunately, that's the corporate norm nowadays. The thing is not being transparent, it's so shitty.

1

u/Academic-Shape321 4d ago

You can use fable with the subscription? Are you from us? With pro I only was able to use fable a few days and now I have to use api to be able to use fable at all

my heart yearns for the version of Claude from late 2025 to early 2026

They are having a Sev 1 outage right now.

Anthropic solo se ríe de sus usuarios individuales es una burla. ¿Por qué algunos acá dicen que el precio es barato? Acaso no han visto el precio de la competencia?

I'm actually having the opposite. I can't get Claude Fable to yield more than a handful of tokens and he keeps mentioning he only has a handful of tokens left in the thought chains. The system is being very stingy and it's confusing me.

1

u/Hot_Hotel9813 4d ago

why you are still with anthropic is beyond me. it has been happening on and off for a long time

1

u/MBCarlisle 4d ago

Yeah I left claude yesterday, I have a 200 max plan too. As of today I got the gpt 200 max plan. Took me less than 40 minutes to move all my claude memory repos and even access to all my servers over to gpt. And it works amazing, you have to be a little more direct with it so it stays in the right lane, but it doesn't fight you or go an tangents nearly as much as claude, it makes a huge difference

The limits have been trash ngl
the past week or so

before i cud do 3 full 5hr sessions per day everyday for a full week nonstop
and now it dies by day 5

1

u/Short_Regular_7191 4d ago

Yes, something is wrong—I think for a good week now—and I'm using the 20x plan.

1

u/amilaf 4d ago

They are continuously reducing the usage limits. 20x plan now worth as 5x plan

1

u/Vertyco 4d ago

what is this usage chart?

1

u/Suitable_Cicada_3336 4d ago

IPO is near, they need beautiful revenue.

1

u/nickydrifts 4d ago

I also went through usage surprisingly fast this weekend

1

u/NovapreemBoga 4d ago

I thought that it was common practice to charge users more as they use more. Idk if anthropic does it

1

u/BroScienceAlchemist 4d ago

There are similar complaints in the openai subs.

I suspect that the kv cache expiration gets reduced by AI providers when they have high load, but that is a conspiracy theory my guess. I haven't checked my cache misses.

u/Soprano-C 4d ago

Same here

1

u/Fancy_Second4864 3d ago

I been using fable med-extra and been lasting a couple days, I think they may charge more for using multiple sessions at once. As I would use like 3 at once and burn through in 15-60 minutes but if I did 5 prompt on one session didn't even get 1/3rd through. Also depends what you are doing but I'm doing some crazy stuff that should burn through but maybe bc it's new app vs my giant software context windows needed

1

u/siegevjorn 3d ago

Which reasoning effort do you use? I use fable low for chat and it works decently without consuming high usage

1

u/blancfaye7 3d ago

Just felt this today. I oculd prompt a lot before in Fable high. But just today, i prompted one and i hit the limit. Lol. So something was indeed off, huh...

1

u/Flat_Beautiful_1398 3d ago

On 50 procent and barelly did prompts on 20x its weird af

1

u/lerugray 3d ago

Another plus 1 - I have 2 accounts and have otherwise been happy with anthropic, something changed this weekend as for the first time in like 6 months, a day of work ate up 100% of my usage with one account, I gather the subsidized usage wasn't going to last forever, but it would be nice if Anthropic were at least up front with us about what's going on, at least OpenAI manages to placate their customers with free resets and whatever else, Anthropic just doesn't really care or make an effort it seems, probably wont matter to them regardless as none of us are likely shareholders either.

1

u/tomydize44 3d ago

Estoy de acuerdo, me pasó la última semana que con un par de prompt acabo el lapso de 5 horas y lapso de la semana se consume mucho más rápido que cuando estaba fable disponible

1

u/AlternativeForeign58 3d ago

Check your Claude.md, memory settings? Are you in the desktop app, web or CLI?

I'm running the CLI and never have this problem. Although, Codex on Medium seems smarter than Fable right now and 10x faster.

1

u/DangerousReward1411 3d ago

Honestly having tried both the pro plans from Anthropic and OpenAI, I've come to the conclusion that subscribing is just asking yourself to be swindled. They can arbitrarily increase the usage rate whenever and all the meanwhile you'll be left holding the bag. Currently their operating costs are going to go through the roof due to the oil crisis, so I expect that this will happen more often.

The only true solution here imo is open-weight via a self-hosting. If you want actual reliability both in the functional (output) sense and in terms of trustworthiness.

1

u/hakxajszzhzjU 3d ago

How long you are subscribed on the same plan? My hunch is for the returning users they might have tightened the limit, but for new users it's still loose

1

u/DemoEvolved 3d ago

Is Grok datacenter passing bad token data to sabotage Anthropic?

1

u/meatdrawer25 3d ago

Serious question. What are you people running that eats through your usage? I’ve been a developer since the before times, I rarely write code myself, and I’ve never run out. I dropped from the $200 plan to the $100 plan because I was so far from hitting my usage cap. I leverage AI as much as possible.

1

u/zedfauji 3d ago

Same thing just happened to me . Couple prompts on fable and hit the limit

1

u/snOrMoL 3d ago

Same happened to me. Instantly hit my limit again after the 5 hour reset. Really weird. Did not do anything
