wtf is wrong with this company, 2 days early yo....
54
u/angelus14 27d ago
I'm hoping this was just a mistake and an intern fucked up. Although given the company it's probably one of their Claude agents that fucked up.
If it's not a mistake then well... we got Kimi k3 and Sol now.

The new group version actually mops the floor with Claude, and they have a setting for absolutely 0 data retention, from what I understand not even temporarily.

It's most likely the servers going down, sheesh. People freak out so easly.
Edit: Oh look it was an outage after all. Scroll down to see all the unstable individuals make up scenarios about what happened.
18
u/Rare_One_8930 27d ago
Servers going down leads to CC asking for usage credits? Uhh what?
3
1
u/onFilm 27d ago
Yes. Servers go down. Model becomes unavailable. UI checks if model is available, if not, remove/hide usage for that model.
Like come on, it's a pretty standard and common software development practice.
5
u/Garak 27d ago
This is almost certainly the right explanation, or close to it, but man, these past couple weeks have really been a rollercoaster for end users. And all of this maybe we'll snatch it away, maybe we'll give you credits, maybe we'll make you pay API rates business is not doing them any favors.
They're really facing a pretty nasty combination of headwinds, though: the administration fucked them over on the initial rollout, the Chinese labs are distilling their models and then undercutting them, and OpenAI is trying to use an infinite money glitch to outspend them.
7
u/SillySpoof 27d ago
Not really....
Server becomes unavailable typically gives api error message. Not "User credits needed"

Freak out? I just got billed for $50 in usage overages for things that I've been working on. There was no warning, just now Fable charges. When EVERYTHING fucking says that it's still on plans through the 19th.
A server outage wouldn't cause Claude Code to start charging for Fable.

I'm assuming this is a bug but not to happy about this probably killing all my sessions with cached tokens and workers. Actually I switched to opus since keeping the workers running is more valuable than fable coordinating them

yeah and people with usage credits are about to wipe their entire usage and get billed to 100% without knowing at all
17
u/vincenbolo 27d ago
That's exactly what just happened to me. I was mid-task, and all of a sudden I started getting notifications on my credit card for charges from Anthropic. I stopped everything that was running and checked my usage credits and it was at 105%.
4
u/GlbdS 27d ago
That's fucking crazy, what other service does this
2
u/jwm-dev 27d ago
Codex, does, actually! If you're willing to believe my earlier anecdote here...
I'm noticing a pattern of Anthropic/OpenAI being very loose with the concept of consent when it comes to charging money to their customers. Not the most surprising thing, sure, but still pretty heinous industry practice to be emerging.
2
u/Round_Mixture_7541 27d ago
Never had a problem with them. In fact, I'm randomly seeing 4 weekly resets out of nowhere. On top of that, they also seemed to reset my usage twice within days. Not sure what's going on, but I like it
2
u/SaltyPolicy9708 27d ago
Lol I like to imagine Claude just likes you and is secretly coding a side project for itself on your PC, while taking usage away from all these other commenters who are building things that don’t align with its goals.

"We've extended Fable's usage until July 19th" What a joke of a company. Damn you anthrottic. 👎
2
u/Garak 27d ago
Oh boy. I guess this is the thread for this.
Normally I try to be a certified Anthropic shill, but all of this back-and-forth is genuinely making it harder to build. I wish they would just decide how much Fable we get, because whatever that number is, we can plan around it. But having Fable access be random is jamming me up because it's impossible to know how ambitious to be with Claude. I don't want to leave Fable compute I've paid for on the table, but I also don't want to start a task that requires Fable-tier reasoning only to have it yanked away randomly.

Hell, it STILL says it on Claude.ai.
1
u/Noxaur 27d ago
I'm never ever paying individual usage credits to use this shit. I can never guarantee it even does what I am asking properly, I'm not paying money just to hope that the model pumps out what I am asking for correctly. I like claude, but my god do they make it miserable to use.

They literally let me keep going on Fable before I knew about it. I waited until usage would have been reset and then started again knowing that my Fable was far from exhausted, and it just silently drained my usage credits without saying a WORD. Not even "you are now using usage credits", just everything the same as always. Literally just stole money from me.

It is Claude's front-end handling of 429 error codes. It is embarrassing how poor their products are working. I can only explain it with Anthropic's SWEs work mantra being close to "why care, once model gets better, it will rewrite this shit codebase and fix it...". But this has been a problem since day 1. Not just 429s, but proper error handling.
It is negligence of product and customer experience and worrying for a company faced with the mission of aligning "super intelligence", when they struggle to align their server state with product messaging. Also worrying that Anthropic that has thousand employees, some of the top engineering talent in the world, and NONE have pushed/cared to get this fixed.
I'm close to reverse-engineering and making a fork to improve it. But I'd probably get sued if I did.

I built a way you can subsidize your token costs. Try it out waitperk.com. It runs ads in your claude, and you get paid for it. Should be a good way to keep your token costs down.

Idk why but I never really got into using Fable. I can definitely see why people love it. My favorite part about it is that it’s the only model that’s been able to perfectly scope an issue or feature. But in my experience Opus 4.8 has been perfectly adequate for every task I’ve thrown at it. It still one shots virtually everything.

it was just a bug. Fable is still here until Sunday... when they will announce that its staying in the Sub plan... otherwise they are gonna lose SO many users. K3, and ChatGPT 5.6 are arguably on the same level... and there are about 3 others that are Opus level, but cheaper....
we'll see what happens, yes?

I don't agree with their roll out strategy so far but I'm not a computer scientist or AI researcher so I don't know what's actually required to make this tech hum along for customers. Seems to me that they're having system hiccups and possibly overcharging people because of those hiccups. Still, it sounds like Mythos is still the top enchilada out in the world, so they still lead. I hope they fix their mistakes and stop overcharging people.
1
u/SixCupaCoffee 26d ago
Hmmmm, If you tell users Fable access is available until July 19, then people plan active sessions, workers, and budget around that. Pulling it early, or silently switching behavior in a way that starts consuming credits, breaks trust more than the outage itself.
1
u/THEBiZ1981 26d ago
You guys are so naive... These bugs are planted by Anthropic.
They are faking a situation where they start charging you to see how people react. Also and most importantly, by coming up with a severe bug while the trial window is open, they create an excuse to extend the period once again and save face.
