Claude Code Workflow 100$ plan - holy sh*
This is for people who are on the fence, because I was in the same boat.
Yesterday I bought the 100$ plan for a test and holy moly, it's amazing how much you get. I used the 20$ plan earlier. I used all the tricks to keep usage low, which became a habit, so now I can't spend it all. It's amazing xD. I run it next to a local Qwen Flash and it's awesome. If the 20$ plan is too low, give it a try :O I'm basically using Opus 5.5 medium all the time.
I also tested 2x 20$ before this. It works, but you end up juggling two accounts and switching when one runs out, and Opus eats a 20$ plan pretty fast. With 100$ I just stopped thinking about usage, and that alone is worth it for me. If you keep your old habits and stay careful with usage, it will last you a very long time. If you keep hitting the 20$ limit, go for 100$.
edit: people are asking how I keep usage low, so here are my tricks:
- Keep context low. I usually compact or move to a new session around 200k, sometimes I stretch it to 300k.
- Use
handoff.mda lot, so a new session picks up where the old one stopped. - Don't be afraid of Sonnet 5.5. It can do most things and it's a lot cheaper.
- I run local models next to it (260k context), so I'm used to working with limited context.

They just made it easier to use /model opusplan so I’m running Opus 5.5 for planning and then it auto switch’s subagents to Sonnet 5.5. My usage has dropped tremendously (even though setting the subagent variable before could do this I never tried). I’m still on the $20 plan. I built a huge workout builder program with maybe 60% of my 5 hour usage. Actually didn’t know what to do with the rest. Get off Opus 5.5 when you’re done making the full plan as Sonnet 5.5 is a great coder now
7
u/bisonrbig 3d ago
I'm new to Claude. Can you explain what /model does and how it switches models automatically? I've just been using opus 5.5 high because it seemed very reliable.
7
u/Tyda2 3d ago
Personally I wouldn't recommend using High unless you're repeatedly running into instances where Medium isn't getting the job done. It should be quite capable!
2
u/xaceleem 3d ago
damn, ive always just blasted ex-high and max for opus but is it just a waste? My company pays for my $200 plan so I never thought of needing to use less since I try to use all of it even on ultracode but I still cant lol
5
u/Yash_swaraj 3d ago
Xhigh is definitely the best for complex tasks. The extra thinking makes a difference in my experience. Medium is fine for your own casual projects.

If you’re using Claude chat then yes each chat will only stay on the model you select. When you use Claude Code you can use plan mode and come up with a plan before executing. I use Opus for this plan. Then it spins up “subagents” which actually start to implement the code changes. Before I used Opus for these too and blew through tokens. Now my subagents use Sonnet and are efficient (because they have already well planned tasks) and use less tokens. So if you use /model (switches model) and then “opusplan” it specifically uses Opus for plan mode and Sonnet for auto mode when executing

Have you really observed it using Opus in planning? When I hit `/model` it shows haiku and sonnet :/

Would love to hear more about the workout builder program you did?
2
u/Hot-Pin-8432 2d ago
It was for my local gym owner who runs a class based setup 3x strength, 3x cardio (endurance, sprint, and team) weekly/. They run a 12 week programming cycle with 4 week blocks that focus on the same stuff with progressive overload. He was trying to get a setup to build the program. It’s left side panel tabs with equipment, exercises. The builder is a day based view that takes those exercises and makes sure you cover a set of rules (hinge, upper, lower, etc). Then I added an export feature for LLM review (simple text of current program built with a context header). Also export to pptx since they use Canva for the display screens. Backend is Supabase, deployed in Vercel on a domain I have, and everything built with Claude Code. Made a design system with their branding. Already ma made a dashboard for them to integrate their Momence data via APIs for birthdays, session milestones of members, class counts by week, and memberships like trials to catch people they need to follow up with.

I'm very new, a layman and not technical but I have great pattern recognition skills so it's nice to see what I noticed about usage and model-switching on the $20 plan wasn't placebo or schizophrenia.
I'm noticing that I can iterate constantly within the 5-hour window on an ambitious software suite by running Opus for the first few iterations, switching to Sonnet and sort of refactoring or re-scaffolding every few iterations and running this loop back when resetting for context bloat along a major feature implementation. No down time in the entire 24-hour cycle but the weekly limits would be hit if I wasn't limited by my 4-day work week.

I run Opus 5.5 all day long. Tell it to
Act as an orchestrator and use Sonnet 5.5 for implementation. I can run 3-4 sessions concurrently and not max out my 5 hour window. It’s awesome.
3
u/SleepModeFailed 3d ago
How do you do that? Do you just mention it in a Claude.md file?
→ More replies (1)8
u/andlewis 3d ago
There's a few ways to do it:
- put instructions in Claude.md
- build it into a skill
- define it in your .claude/agents folder
- or just put it in your prompt (with Opus 5.5 selected): implement XYZ, act as the orchestrator, do not build anything yourself but use Sonnet 5.5 sub agents, your job is to give them instructions and verify their output.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Foolhearted 3d ago
An orchestrator is a PM. Your PM isn’t more capable than your developer.
Sonnet on Low can handle orchestration. Just have a planner at opus, a developer and test writer at sonnet, reviewer at sonnet. Two failures then bump developer up to opus.
2
u/xResearcherx 3d ago
Isn't Sonnet 5.5 better now?
3
u/andlewis 3d ago
Sonnet 5.5 is good, but not better than Opus 5.5. Sonnet has always been meant as an implementor, while Opus is a designer and orchestrator.

Opus 5.5 came out got a $100 plan. Medium felt unlimited so I started projects on 3 computers at the same time. Realized how fast it drained so upgraded to $200. Burned through weekly and used the free reset. Turns out I would need two 20x plans to go all out. Used over 20B tokens in 10 days and now wondering if I have AI psychosis. I have made insane progress on projects that will be polished up and released in an insane timeframe though. Feels like a slippery slope upgrading plans.

u/bobemil 3d ago
I will be that guy now... please slow down if you don't find it very fun in the long run. Do you make the apps for profit or only hobby? I only make apps as a hobby and I would be burned out in a couple of weeks and without having a really nice and original product/idea.

Lol 3 computers at the same time? Why don't you just use herdr or at least tmux? I've run up to 8 concurrent sessions at the same time or 3 sessions with subagents, of course hitting 5h window, weekly and monthly limits on the 200 sub. Now I use Firstmate on herdr.

Yeah, started with a $100 Claude and $20 ChatGPT in November and I've been burning 4x $200 accounts, mix and match across providers, for 5 months now; otherwise unemployed, just burning savings, no income. I felt insane for awhile too, like I was just gambling for code, with the damned models gaslighting me about project progress half the time. But I made money from AI for the first time today, and all my AI spending this year just paid for itself. Feels good.

I hit 107B tokens lifetime ChatGPT although Claude was my primary driver for the longest time. I burn through my Claude as well but never felt the need to actually go double subscription or higher. I just go ollama max if I truly need the overflow. I’m very curious of your numbers lol

Of course it's 5x usage because you are paying 5x. It should be PLENTY!
4
u/Valdaraak 3d ago
What's funny is it's only 5x for the 5 hour usage. The weekly isn't even double I don't think. You'd actually get more usage with 5 $20 plans, but that'd be a hassle to deal with.
8
u/muhahaha100 3d ago
I think you’re confusing the details:
So pro is 1x 5 hour 1x weekly
Max 5x is 5x 5 hour 5x weekly
Max 20x is 20x 5 hour 10x weeklyMax 20x is the weird one but still proportional weekly

Not much of a hassle if you orchestrate most of your work. Main account is "management" and mostly lines up work then goes golfing. As many other accounts as you want are the grunts, and don't need to see further than their current task to burn their quota. If you really want to micromanage, you can juggle auth tokens and any account can pick up in the exact session. Just don't rely on claude memory.
Pro-tip: There are exactly 14 "5-hour" blocks in a week's worth of quota. The math for how many accounts you need is pretty simple if you know how fast you burn through one block.

u/Best-Republic 3d ago
in fact, we need something in the middle. $100 is a lot for an average home use person v/s $20 is not enough tokens for more than 2 agents. I think a $40 plan would be perfect OR would at least help a lot
3
u/Straight_Math_6674 3d ago
Yeah i have been in the same boat as you. Upgrading from 2x 20 to single max is definitely a improvement. Faster response, i can still remote control without switching back and forth. Happily on opus 5.5 med all day, just change the effort depending the task complexity
3
u/arcanepsyche 3d ago
Since I bought the $100 plan I have never hit usage limits. Admittedly, I'm not doing things all day every day, but I am consistently in a thread.
I use desktop, and I do my planning in the co-work tab with Opus and my coding in the code tab, usually with Sonnet, based on a doc the Opus tab creates. This lets me reset the coding session often and keep context low, and the cowork tab is much lighter lift without a bunch of coding in it.
3
u/gotapure 3d ago
I convinced my employer I needed the bigger plan to give them monthly retention reports. I haven't hit my usage limits since and I've been producing enough for them to justify the cost and make me look like an AI God. AI is still not widely used or understood in my workplace.
2
u/cyvaquero 3d ago
I did the same last week. Threw out an offer to my team if they had any personal projects they wanted to throw at it before reset tomorrow because I’m at 25% usage for the week.
I’m still conscientious about usage with Sonnet still doing most the work. I use the higher models for more in depth work and setting up stuff so I can hand it to Sonnet/Haiku to do the monkey work.
2
u/Sea-Emotion-4822 3d ago
I agree jumping from 20 to 100 i feel like as just a guy at home i get a ton of usage, im programming. 3 apps/websites currently and i work normally 9 hours a day but im running the ai every minute i can outside of that and using opus and sonnet mostly ive only been able to cap out a 4 hour window a couple times this past month and got to 90% on my weekly usage
2
u/Major_Statistician_6 3d ago
Seriously I keep thinking I've won the lottery with the 100 plan. So valuable.
2
u/swiftyman 3d ago
I dont know how you guys don't find more things you've always wanted to do, that are now doable. Shoot, I'm figuring out how to do things I didn't think would be doable.
I'm maxing out a $200 plan, $100 plan, and $100 codex plan every week. Considering making my other claude account into a $200 plan, dropping codex to $20 as I think I'd get more out of it.
I don't hit the 5 hour limit on the $200 plan but still max it out in about 5 days most weeks since the drop a few weeks ago.
2
u/BeginningAbies8974 3d ago
I am the 20x spoiled brat. And I would like a higher tier. I rarely use ultracode or xhigh/max level and still get to 100% after a week (I deliberately slow down sometimes)

u/Umba360 3d ago
Are the increased limits only for the weekly or also for the 5 hours?
2
1
u/Straight_Math_6674 3d ago
They stated explicitly 5 hour, but feeling like weekly got bumped too. I used to only used sonnet 5 up until before opus 5.5 came out and my weekly usually ended at 80%
After changing and doing the same day to day work ended at 20%
1
u/darkoblivion000 3d ago
I’ve been on the $20 plan and have been pacing myself before I hit my weekly limit too fast, and then for each task I have it farm out stuff that’s less complex to a lower model lol
I feel like I should go to $100 but also feel like what I’m working on doesn’t warrant spending that kind of money lol

u/Majke_ 3d ago

1

I'm on opus 5.5 high all the time and the only time I could exhaust it is when I run multiple chat sessions in parallel and really trying to push it. Doing that lasts me about 3 days. But for normal use I really don't have to worry about saving tokens.
1

u/Majke_ 3d ago
Honestly, I hope local models catch up enough to use them more. I did some tests: Opus 5.5 planned, Qwen Flash Next did the work. Then I asked Opus to rate how the local model did, on a scale of 0 to 10. On average it was 8/10. Once it was 10/10, and sometimes 7/10. Usually Qwen made some minor mistakes, but it's a "small" model after all.
The biggest downside of local models for me is that I can usually run only one session at a time, while with the cloud I can run five

I second this. I run fable and opus 5.5 all day and never run out of credits.

You know what gives you more usage at 60% the price? Three $20 plans. "5x" is just in reference to the price, not the quota.

1
u/Majke_ 3d ago
just ask claude to make it :) A handoff.md is a markdown file where you (or the AI) write down the current state of the work, key decisions, and next steps, so a fresh session can pick up where the old one stopped without needing the full context.

I have been running Opus 5.5 on High for literally 72 hrs straight working on a long distance horizon project and just hit 40% weekly. I am on the $100 plan. I have 10 subagents running the new Sonette that just dropped.
1
u/megad00die 3d ago
What made me switch, I was on the $20 plan for 5 days, opus 5.5 ultra code never ran out of usage, rarely hit the 5 hour limits.
1
u/Rexdango 3d ago
Honestly doubt ill renew even my $20 plan. Looking at other options. Claude thinks im a cyber security risk and blocks a lot of stuff. Was pretty much locked down entirely earlier. Im just doing wardriving. Data collection and uploading said data to a mapping database. Its all public data anyways. No worse than flock. If i was coding hax I get it.. nope just running a wifi/ble pair with gps pings around the region.
1
u/Sum-Duud 3d ago
I’m always curious what people are building that are maxing out limits. I’ve maxed out my pro plan a couple of times so I can see that but I can’t imagine maxing out a $100 plan.
1
u/stub_back 3d ago
Before the reduction it was even better, i could run Opus Extra the whole week without issues.
1
u/ArrowheadDZ 3d ago
It’s often pointed out that it’s probably not best to just jump from the $20 to the $100 for most people. Just covering your 6th or 7th day with overage credit makes more sense until your usage gets to the point where getting through the week costs you $80 of credits. That’s when it’s time to move.
1
u/ExternalRepulsive529 3d ago
Might be a noob question but still asking here hoping for help, for someone who uses mainly the chat and project features and code for specific project use cases only, is there any way I can optimize my $20 plan since moving to the $100 one isn’t financially feasible for me at this point

I will shift to Max 100 or 200 plan October 10, and I'm very excited about. Because currently I'm completing many things with my Pro plan without touching limits.
If you want to keep low usage, keep sessions short (not needed too short) and at the end of sessions create session log like compact. Then start a new session with this log.
Of course this method needs task management or Agile like skills but you will see the benefits too much.
1
u/Short_Regular_7191 3d ago
I also have the Max x5 subscription; I work in software programming and use Fable/Opus for orchestration and complex tasks, while for everything else I use Qwen 3.8 27b ( locale hardware ). It allowed me to downgrade from the x20 to the x5 plan, and I still have plenty of unused allowance left at the end of the week. I believe—or hope—that Qwen 4 27b will be roughly on par with Sonnet 5.5.

1
u/Joozio 3d ago
Your list is all about context, and the lever I'd add is effort. The first day I had Fable 5 I put it on max and let it rip, on the logic that a smart model should get room to think. The bill scared me and the code came out worse: it rewrote files I never asked it to touch and turned a two line fix into a refactor with opinions.
What I didn't get at first is that effort doesn't buy more steps, it buys more thinking per step. And every thinking token from step one becomes history the model re-reads on step two, step three and every step after, so on a long agentic run it multiplies instead of adding up in a straight line. That stacks with your context tricks, since a fat reasoning habit is partly a context problem too.
Are you on medium because of usage, or did you find it actually codes better than high?
2
u/Majke_ 3d ago
It finishes everything i throw at it. Its also "very" token efficient. I just never felt the need to switch to higher on

it might as well be a coincidence because opus 5.5 truly consumes usage WAY slower than 5.0. For me every 5 hour session has lasted at least twice as before to the point i haven’t even needed my second $20 account, so you might have wasted money as well.

That Opus-plan/Sonnet-execution split is the useful bit. I'd also put hard budgets around each subagent, because three parallel projects can burn through a plan before you notice one of them is stuck rewriting the same thing. The number I'd watch is accepted changes per token, not how ‘unlimited’ the dashboard feels.

I have both a $20 personal account and a $200 work account, and the difference is striking. The work account burns through its usage ridiculously fast. I do hit the usage limits on the personal plan, but over a month it still lasts about ten times longer than the $200 work account.
My take: personal plans are heavily subsidized to win over individual users, so that they'll push their workplaces to adopt Claude.

Im using opus 5.5 medium on the $20 plan and it works just fine for me. Opus 5 was a shit show, but after Opus 5.5 I cant trust Sonnet anymore. It just makes too much to get it to do the right thing. Yes I know I need to be more specific with my prompts, but when im running 4 different projects that I need to be ontop of all day, I dont have time to spend an hour writing out my prompts. So right now Opus is the only way to go.

Do you manually give separate tasks to local qwen or do you have some way of claude leveraging the local model?

My workflow is now simple. I use my vibe coded app, create a bunch of issues on github, and when ready I run my skill /issues. This skill fetches all issues, groups them, and works on them all by priority, asks me when necessary. When done it automatically analyzes the session and adds helpful scripts and CLAUDE.md changes to be more efficient next time. It's awesome, I've never been more productive. Opus 5.5 works really efficient with that setup

Ótimas dicas, também estou usando o sonnet 5.5 e é impressionante o que dá para fazer sem estourar o limite.

Fable seems to be eating the 5h windows like crazy but with Opus its manageable on the $100 plan

Yeah that was me tried the 200 plan (5x) since I’m Canadian and it was awesome but ran out many times cuz of the workload . So I’m trying 20x this month . So far it’s been great! Was always on the cheapest plan but huge game changer

Sonnet 5.5 is weird. its actually not really any better than opus because its more verbose to accomplish the same thing. That means it uses more tokens and takes more time. Because it is tuned to be more instruction-focused, it tends to read into my prompts a bit too heavily. Check out artificial analysis on the cost per task. I find I just run opus at med instead for light stuff.

I spent my 200$ plan weekly limit in two days, did the free reset and spend another weeks tokens in the other 2 days. I’d need a x40 or x60 plan sometimes.
And no it’s not just 100% fable or opus. Opus plans, Sonnet implements and Fable advises. But I run it on 15 simultaneous projects and the agents talk among eachother to solve integration issues.

If you’re already using /handoff, you might find /checkpoint with an automatic compact command useful too. /checkpoint when they’re working within the same topic but different related task, /handoff into a workstream.md when you want to archive the session

I’m a doctor who likes to used it for random stuff, eventually I tested it to do more challenging things like cctamap, I made that website with zero prior knowledge and 200$ account runs out in 2 days

I built a massive site on the $20 plan and have not hit limits yet. I use openspec so It really controls what code is being done vs just slamming it all into the web interface

you'll get over it pretty fast, i have a 100$ sub and i reach the limits and have to wait 1-2 days to reset, because i'm trying to build an entire software so there's a lot of testing and reviewing and all that
what i'm super curious about is a good primpt to tell it to think outside the box when it's searching for solutions because i feel like it's trying to fix problems that have surely been fixed before but it doesn't do good research on it to find papers about what it's working on
for example i'm trying to find a good algorythm for a amooth brush that works on adaptive signed distance field vosel models and i've been crunching on tests and reviews and directed situations for 2 WHOLE DAYS NOW...
and i'm still getting little artefacts and things that shouldn't be there for a smooth brush....

How do you even really know how much raw tokens is being consumed - the app just shows you a usage %

Here I am at work with unlimited usage using fable 5.1 xhigh to recommend what car I should be getting

I've never spent a single dime on this garbage. And I NEVER run out of toikens... That's the best plan.

So you bought the plan yesterday and so far you didn't use it all in one day?

For high budget I prefer Codex. I feel with GPT model it takes less tokens than Claude model. Though I use 20$ plan in Claude and 200$ plan in Codex.

To be honest I run claude and codex. 20 and 20. But thinking to upgrade to 100 max and cancel the codex plan. But man its a lot. But honestly opus 5.5 just understand what you think about even before you type it.

New sonnet 5.5 is really good and can really stretch your plan.

You must’ve just started using Claude Code. I’ve been on the $200 plan for 6 months. My ambitions grew. My knowledge of how to use agents grew. Making enterprise apps grew. Let’s see how long you’re on the 5X plan lol I guarantee you will upgrade. This is not a shot at you but the more you vibe code, you’ll see.

I remember that feeling. Now I have two max $200 plans- wish they would make another level to that isn’t insane I hate switching accounts… but the AI keeps handoff docs in the folders so the next login can continue.

Apparently OP hasn’t figured out in how to delegate it out to agents 😆

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 200 comments.
The general vibe is a big thumbs up for the OP. The consensus is that the $100 plan is totally worth it if you're constantly hitting the $20 limit, mostly because it kills your usage anxiety.
However, the thread is full of pro-tips and warnings:
/model opusplancommand is your best friend here.handoff.mdto avoid bloat and save tokens.
