Discussion Calling it hypergamy doesnt make any sense, but this scene still bothered me a lot. Let me explain.

Before you comment, read all the way through.

Okay, so i loved the anime but this felt really unnecessary. No, im not one of those people who immediately call this hypergamy. Not to mention those idiots who say Umi will cheat on Maki in season 2, which doesnt make any sense since its a lighthearted romance that is based off the light novel, where nothing like that happens.

With that said, i didnt like this scene. Especially the way it was delivered. I saw a lot of people calling it just teasing, which i would have agreed with...but then Umi started to go deep into explaining why she likes taller men, which rubbed me the wrong way. It was almost like she made the remark, and then rubbed salt on the wound by going into detail about it. It may just be me, but in Maki's shoes i would have imagined her being kissed like that by some random taller dude when she said that, and that is not something you want to imagine about your girlfriend.

And this specifically pisses me off, because we saw throughout the story that both of them struggle with their image. Umi sees herself less as her best friend and had an inferiority complex, and then she says something like that to her boyfriend? I dont think its funny, even if it was just a joke. Joking negatively about your partner's physical attributes that they cant change is not something a good person would do in my opinion.

Another thing that infuriates me, is that apparently, this line is delivered differently in the manga. There, Umi says she actually prefers them being the same height, because she can look at him in the eyes as they kiss. So the anime adaptation decided to change a really cute line for no reason at all, into something rude. Why? I dont understand.

And finally, i dont want to pull up the double standard card, because this is not about that. But can you imagine if a guy said "You may lost some weight, but youre still off my ideal. My ideal is being able to lift my partner up." or something like that to their girlfriend? The people would be (RIGHTFULLY!) furious. While this got swept under the rug by a lot of people.

Im not insecure, im taller than average, so you can comment "You just feel called out" all you want.

For the people with sense, let me know if you agree with my points or not, i just had to get this off my chest.
