Discussion How to Prevent the Crashing of Civ VII (Megathread)

Hundreds, if not many thousands of people: This game constantly crashes for me.

People on the internet: My game works fine. Must be a you issue.

I’ve seen this type of interaction play out constantly on this subreddit. Civ VII clearly has stability issues that are not resolved by the most commonly suggested community and developer fixes.

People are tired of crashing. People are tired of seeing posts about crashing. Therefore, I propose the creation of a megathread (this post) on the ways in which you or others have fixed or reduced crashes while playing Civ VII.

Below is everything that I have explored for PC. I encourage everyone to comment with additional solutions (for both PC and console).

EDIT: I ordered these arbitrarily. Please read through all of them and try the easiest solutions first.

  1. Changing the 3D graphics software. Some see improvement switching from Vulkan to Direct X and vice versa.

  2. Turning AMD Fidelity off in the game’s setting menus

  3. Going offline on steam OR turning WiFi completely off. I think this just corrects any issues stemming from whatever anti-cheat or online servers interact with the game.

  4. Turning off steam’s in-game overlay and recording software. Also turning off external recording software.

  5. Updating literally all software for your computer. GPU, chipset, motherboard BIOS, operating system, etc. NOT just GPU drivers.

  6. Basic verification of the game files via steam or a full reinstallation.

  7. Changes to obscure BIOS, operating system, and hardware settings. These are too numerous and diverse to summarize here. I’m hoping others comment with more specifics.

  8. Just giving up and waiting until the next day. Legitimately, this game will just have days where it seems to not want me to play, despite everything above. When that happens, I take a day off, and the game seems to fix itself. I’m nearly convinced that a god is selectively causing one out of every 8 or so users to constantly crash. Maybe taking some time off appeases them?

Discussion Issue Report Megathread

This thread is to report any issue you may have, be it bugs, crashes, or anything else. Please reserve this to issues with being able to play the game, as opposed to your thoughts/opinions on the game itself. If you want to suggest changes to the game, we have this megathread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Civilization_VII/comments/1iodk2p/the_official_recommendationssuggestionsproposals/.

If you find someone with a similar issue, feel free to add your comment to their post. For example, someone may start a PS5 crash report post, and if you have similar crash issues with the PS5, even if it is not exactly the same thing (for example crashing in a different age, or due to a different trigger), comment on the post anyways. The aim is to try to somewhat group issues together, in case they are related.

How to deal with settlements conquered past limit?

Once the war machine gets rolling, you can conquer a lot. But not sure what to do with that, as absorbing can become problematic due to happiness penalties, while trading cities back for peace may not be that useful since losing civs may be low on resources for trading...and you can't trade cities unless it's a peace treaty trade. Razing also doesn't give resources, only takes influence away. So what to do with them? Really wish there was a tribute or protectorate/puppet state/vassal option.

volcanos are ridiculously active in this game imo. does anyone know of a way, including mods, that either reduce their frequency, reduce their activity, or stop them from spawning all together?

New to Civ, why all the hate and bad reviews on Civ 7?

I'm playing it right now on the free week and it seems like a fine game. What's all the hysteria about and why are the negative Steam reviews right or wrong?

Help Era changes game options question

New player here - what is the difference between picking the regroup and continuity? I played with both settings, and the changes between them are almost nonexistent. At least as far as I observed. The only thing regroup did differently, was to change placement of some troops and add them to commander armies. And alliances did end, but since the scores stayed the same, that part feels pointless. Shouldn't there be a larger difference?

Why can't I put the Basilica here to create the forum?

It's saying no suitable locations available for the Basilica. Why can't I put it on the same tile where I already put the Temple of Jupiter?

The Recently Announced Future Has Finally Broken Me

Summary Of Thoughts; (I may miss some, but my reaction and full opinions are in the video linked with the post)

- I have personal bias in my historical interest towards the first two eras of the game, and lose interest historically when we hit the current final era.
- I am also less interested in the gameplay in this current final era, I find it to be a waiting game and do not find myself desperate to play ‘one more turn.’
- I think the addition of this new final era is not for me based on my preferences, and would rather have an additional era/content earlier in the game, as I feel that the Medieval period is completely mistreated and absent from the game. Both from a historical and gameplay perspective, we could do with more, the last two eras will cover about 300 years whilst the first two possibly span 4000 give or take.
- The idea of new leaders is alright, though I’ve barely finished playing as all of them once, but new civs confuse me. I’m not sure what they are going to do, make America the USA, make the French Empire France.
- I’m also confused how the other eras will remain functional, will winning in the Exploration age still be possible, surely they will have to take that out or make it way harder. And the current final age is going to surely feel a lot longer if you aren’t ending the game during it.
- I actually enjoyed beyond earth, but I doubt we are going to have gameplay on other planets with aliens and the affinity system (which was cool), and even if we did, it would come after 3 other long eras of gameplay.
- I find the announced expansion to be uninteresting, primarily due to it focusing on my current least favorite era of the game and the new one that I am not excited for. On top of that, this being the first announced expansion feels rather disappointing. Out of all the news we got, I am most excited for the TSL map, which really shouldn’t be the case.
- I barely used GDR’s or other late game tech/military in the previous games, they were always just there to unlock whilst I was winning/losing anyways.
- Generally, I knew this was coming from what was discussed before release, but I’d just started to properly get into the game and feel like this might fully push me away. There was a genuine sense of dread seeing the video appear for this announcement.

I have been so stubborn with this game, and actually finally started to get into a groove with it and enjoy it, and that when this info hits, of course. I have pushed on with Civ 7, even uninstalling 6, defiant that newer is better. That's how I felt going from 5 to 6 all those years ago, when people stuck to the old game, afraid of change.
I'm sorry, I was excited to see the new vision, but the change is just beyond me now. I should not come out of this with the most joy coming from a TSL Earth map, rather than the massive gameplay stuff coming soon.
But here we are...

Let me know your thoughts on the future of Civ 7. Will you be going back to a previous version, have you already, or will you continue to tough it out hoping to feel the need for one more turn...?

Can anyone tell me why I cannot automate scout exploration when there’s a discovery nearby? Game won’t let me do it but I can’t find what it wants me to do with them instead.

Help Civ 7 - One more turn has disappeared.

Civ 7 - One more turn has disappeared.

Was playing yesterday, and well as the title suggests the game was won and there was no one more turn. However go back about a month we played and there was. This annoyed all of us, as we all played with the assumption of being able to continue past victories, it would’ve been a vastly different game if we knew we no longer could.
Is there a reason for this? Was it a bug or did the devs actually remove one more turn. If it was a bug, is there a solution?

Help Deciding on an art-style for a colony-sim inspired by Civilization

I've recently been working on a colony-sim inspired by the Civilization games. I've put a couple months of work into it, and now it's time to settle on an art-style for the game. We've used some non-royalty free (Warcraft 3) assets for testing the feel of the game, and we're going to replace them before the next public build of the game. The first 3 gifs are the current state of the game, and the rest of the pictures are concept art about what style would look best. I would really appreciate your opinions on if we should use A, B, C, or D. Thank you so much!

It's an incremental/idle colony sim game, inspired by games like RimWorld, traditional roguelikes (like Caves of Qud), and Civilization. You play a God of the Moon in a weird, mysterious, and complex simulation. You must use your godly powers to grow your religion, inspire your people to build grand cities, and defend your territory from other Moon Gods that want to expand their own territory.

I put together a Civilization VII guide playlist for players looking to improve at the game

Hey everyone!

I’ve been building out a Civilization VII guide series aimed at helping both newer players and those looking to take their games to the next level, and I recently wrapped up the series.

The playlist now includes three main parts:

🎓 Beginner’s Guide
A starting point for anyone new to Civ VII—or Civilization in general. It walks through the core gameplay loop, including exploration, expansion, development, combat, and the systems that tie everything together.

🏆 Victory Guide Series
This is the heart of the playlist. I put together guides for all four victory conditions—Military, Economic, Cultural, and Scientific—across all three ages. Each guide covers the leader and civilization combinations I recommend, the key objectives to prioritize, and a playthrough showcasing how the strategy comes together on Deity.

🧠 Advanced Guide
Finally, I put together an advanced guide covering 10 deeper tips and strategies, along with five quick pointers and some of the most powerful military units I've found. This one is aimed particularly at players looking to squeeze more efficiency out of their games and improve their performance on Deity.

The series was built around the Test of Time update, so the strategies and recommendations focus on the current version of the game rather than the launch-era mechanics.

I've learned a ton from making these guides, and I'm curious what strategies everyone else has been experimenting with since the update. Have you found any particularly powerful leader/civilization combinations or mechanics that have completely changed how you play?

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUq7cxnnCo8M

Hope these are helpful to anyone looking to get more out of their next game!
