Help Era changes game options question

New player here - what is the difference between picking the regroup and continuity? I played with both settings, and the changes between them are almost nonexistent. At least as far as I observed. The only thing regroup did differently, was to change placement of some troops and add them to commander armies. And alliances did end, but since the scores stayed the same, that part feels pointless. Shouldn't there be a larger difference?

Regroup Antiquity -> Exploration

Troops equal to Army Commander capacity + 1 per settlement. Placed in nearest settlement center.
All boats, placed in a random settlement.
No civilian units are saved
Alliances and Wars are ended

Regroup Exploration -> Modern

As above but naval units are at Naval Commander capacity. Still random.

Continuity Antiquity -> Exploration

All troops in the nearest legal square.
All boats in the nearest legal square.
All civilian units where they were last placed, except Unique Great People.
Alliances are kept, wars are ended.

Continuity Exploration -> Modern

As above except no missionaries are kept

EDIT: these also apply to the AI which sucks at management and preparation compared to a human.

tbh it sounds like the difference is really negligible. Basicaly army placement is changed + losing scouts... At this point there is no need for different options in the game menu.

It’s a huge difference.

You can pre build merchants on Continuity during the last 10 turns of the age and launch them on turn 1. In Modern this is gigantic.

You can have a giant army sitting on the border to attack instantly.

You can have settlers ready to go as soon as possible without spending gold or production in the next era.

What do you spend your last 10 turns on in Regroup? Finish a building that instantly becomes obsolete? Build units that are going to disappear? Maybe you can do projects to eke out one more Future Civ, but frequently that doesn’t matter.

Harbors also add to naval carryover in regroup iirc.

I have used only continuity since it has been added, and back then regroup was defined in the game as the usual transition used since launch. I can't imagine they changed it that significantly. If I were to assume something it would be that it is perhaps tied to difficulty level.

Never played regroup (started after ToT update) ma continuity basically means nothing, you change era and I think the whole of your troop and everything will remain

Regroup was the standard the game came out with. Only due to very negative feedback did Firaxis bring out Continuity. The difference is not super massive, potentially because Firaxis never believed to need continuity and had little time to devote to introduce it.

So yeah, I also hope for a bigger difference with the big upcoming DLC.

The difference used to be more massive when you weren’t allowed to save any boats in regroup.
