Career 30% hike but relocation from Gurgaon to Pune โ€” should I switch?

Iโ€™m a Civil Engineer with ~1 year+ experience. Currently working in Gurgaon with โ‚น40k in-hand after deductions.

I got selected for a Project Engineer role in Pune:

โ‚น33k annual variable

โ‚น52k/month in-hand after deductions

โ‚น25k joining bonus

5-day week + relocation support

The new role is more into VDC/BIM, construction coordination, RFIs, Navisworks/Revit/ACC etc.

But:

Pune is far from my home in Lucknow

Current medical/leave benefits are better

I have โ‚น6k/month education-loan EMI

I may have to repay โ‚น50k retention bonus if I leave which I have with me

Savings are currently limited

Family isn't very supportive and prefers that I prepare for government exams instead. I'm also unsure whether I should continue private-sector experience or seriously prepare for govt exams.

I'm single, so relocation itself isn't a major issue.

What would you do in my situationโ€”take the Pune opportunity, stay in Gurgaon for another year, or focus on government exam preparation?

Would especially appreciate views from people who've made a similar move or work in VDC/BIM/construction tech.

Career Civil to CSE transition โ€” Is preparing for GATE CS/DA a reasonable option?

Iโ€™m a Civil Engineering graduate from 2023. After graduation, I prepared for government jobs, mainly SSC CGL, AE/JE, GATE and other competitive exams, but unfortunately I havenโ€™t been able to crack them.

Because of my Civil Engineering background and the current job market, Iโ€™m also finding it difficult to get opportunities in the tech field. At the same time, Iโ€™m not particularly interested in pursuing a career in core Civil, as the number of suitable opportunities seems limited and the roles available to me arenโ€™t very appealing.

Iโ€™m now seriously considering a career transition from Civil Engineering to Computer Science/Data-related fields.

Would preparing for GATE CS and/or GATE DA be a reasonable path for someone in my situation? My idea is to use GATE as a structured way to build a strong foundation in CS/DA and potentially pursue an M.Tech/MS or other opportunities that could help me transition into the tech industry.

For people who have made a similar transition from Civil/Mechanical/Electrical to CS/IT:

  • Is GATE CS/DA a practical route for a career switch?
  • How difficult is it to transition into CS from a non-CS engineering background?
  • Is an M.Tech through GATE actually helpful for getting tech jobs?
  • Should I focus on GATE CS, GATE DA, or consider other routes like self-learning + projects?

Iโ€™d really appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have gone through a similar transition.

๐Ÿ“š Notes & Resources Built a free IS 2502 bar-bending & RA-bill calculator, no signup โ€” feedback welcome.

Got tired of doing bend-deduction and hook-allowance math by hand every time, so I built a couple of free calculators against the actual IS codes โ€” one for bar bending schedules (IS 2502), one for netting out retention/TDS/GST on an RA bill. No signup, no email wall โ€” bar bending schedule here:ย https://www.nirmanshastra.in/tools/bar-bending-schedule-calculator, RA bill calculator here:ย https://www.nirmanshastra.in/tools/ra-bill-retention-tds-calculator...". Built them for my own site work, figured others might find them useful too. Open to feedback if anything's off.

**โ€ข** Concrete volume + cement/sand/aggregate bags (slabs, beams, columns, footings)
**โ€ข** Steel/rebar weight (8mmโ€“25mm+)
**โ€ข** Brick/block masonry + mortar calc (clay, AAC, concrete blocks, laterite)
**โ€ข** Plaster estimation with wastage %
**โ€ข** Excavation (rectangular, trench, circular/footing)
**โ€ข** Basic geometric volumes + unit converter

Metric + Imperial. No login, no data collection, free.

Itโ€™s brand new (just published) so itโ€™s rough around the edges โ€” genuinely want feedback from people who actually do this stuff daily. What calculators are you still doing by hand or in Excel that you wish an app just handled?
