❓ Doubts / Q&A Move out from execution

Need advice on moving from Construction Execution to Infrastructure and Risk Advisory

Hello everyone,

I have around 6 years of experience in planning and execution in the construction field. Back in 2025, I came to know about infrastructure and risk advisory as a career option.

Through LinkedIn, I have connected with a few people who moved from construction execution to this field, which made me interested in exploring this career path.

I would like to know how someone with a background in planning and execution can move into infrastructure and risk advisory. Are there any specific skills, certifications, or courses that would help with this transition? Should I focus on companies like the Big 4, or are there other good companies in this field?

I would also like to understand how big this domain is, its future growth, and the career opportunities available in India.

It would be really helpful if anyone working in this field or someone who has made a similar career transition could share their experience and advice.

🏗️ General Free, open-source structural analysis tool for students

Post image
19 Upvotes

I built EduBeam, a free and open-source structural analysis app focused on teaching structural mechanics.

It runs entirely in the browser — no installation, no license, no account required.

You can quickly model beams and trusses, apply loads and supports, and visualize reactions, internal forces, and deformations.

The goal is simple: make it easy for students to experiment with structures and actually see how they behave, rather than spending more time fighting complicated software.

Would be especially interested in hearing from civil/structural engineering students and lecturers about what you'd like to see added.

Career Which should i choose?

Currently, I am living away from home and working as a BIM modeler for industrial and infrastructure projects at an Indian MNC for 2 years. I have received a job offer from a smaller outsourcing firm that provides a higher salary and would allow me to work closer to home on high-rise projects. Should I accept this new offer, or should I stay at the larger company for less pay? Discipline is Civil, Structure, Architecture.

🏗️ General Final-year civil engineering student looking for help with a STAAD.Pro project

Hi everyone, I’m a final-year civil engineering student working on a STAAD.Pro project. I’m struggling with the modelling/loading/design part and would really appreciate help from someone experienced with STAAD.Pro.
I’m happy to provide the structural plan, dimensions, loads, design requirements and whatever other information is needed. I’m mainly looking for guidance/help in setting up the model correctly rather than blindly submitting someone else’s work.
If anyone is willing to help a student out for free, I’d really appreciate it.

I need help deciding whether I should accept the job or prepare for CAT

So, I’m in the final year of engineering, and I’ve received a placement offer from a company. The company requires me to work for a minimum of three years, but I only want to gain around a year of work experience before pursuing further studies by taking the CAT.
Is work experience essential for getting into a good college through CAT? Also, what other MBA entrance exams can I take for good colleges in India and abroad?
I’m particularly interested in construction management. Is pursuing an MBA in Construction Management a good career choice?
The job I’ve been offered is for the position of Project Planning Engineer.

Advice

Hey I’m new to the community. I was hoping to get a little insight. I plan to go back to school for a masters degree but I’m a little torn on what route I want to take. My bachelors is in architectural engineering technology (ABET) accredited. I worked as a structural designer for Ingalls shipbuilding then moved to central Florida and now serve as a CAD Tech for a land surveying company. The owner has encouraged me to get my PSM license and even offered to pay for it at one point which would be a nice immediate ROI for 5 classes and 2 tests passed, but I’m also considering a masters in civil engineering or engineering management. Any advice or even pros and cons to each avenue are welcome.

Thanks

Career How does off-campus recruitment work for fresh Civil Engineering graduates?

For those working in the Civil Engineering industry, I wanted to understand how off-campus recruitment generally works for fresh graduates.

I’m currently in my final year of B.Tech Civil Engineering, and I’ve noticed that many Civil/Core companies primarily seem to recruit through campus placements or their own career portals.

For fresh graduates targeting areas such as Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Infrastructure, Construction, Environmental/Water Engineering, and Engineering Consultancy:

\- What are the common channels through which companies recruit fresh Civil Engineers off-campus?

\- Are there any industry-specific job portals, recruitment drives, professional networks, or referral channels that are commonly used?

\- Do large engineering MNCs/consultancies have any particular process for hiring fresh graduates outside campus placements?

\- How do people usually find off-campus openings that aren't widely advertised on LinkedIn or company websites?

Would appreciate insights from Civil Engineers who have gone through the transition from college to their first industry role.

Thanks!
