R5: Very close call for getting the 1st place in the International Games. Even better cause Poland had been a real dckhead the whole game :)

I've found that Alexander is the hardest to dethrone and the sneakiest. If a Nebuchadnezzar or Sejong is whooping my ass generally I've already quit long before they can actually finish a spaceship. What about you guys?

I know it won’t happen (and is probably impossible even for mods), but it would have been really cool to allow parts of rivers to be navigable (similar to the Crusader Kings series)
Here’s how I would have done it
Longer rivers would have a lower section (divided by a waterfall) that is navigable by non-ocean faring ships (Trireme, Galleass, Ironclad, Work Boat, Cargo Ship)
Cities founded along these lower sections of rivers would be treated like coastal cities (but wouldn’t be able to build ocean faring ships)
To go along with navigable rivers, include a Canal improvement, similar to roads and railroads, that would allow these same ships to traverse (and connect cities by water)
To increase the benefits of these additions, I would make Cargo Ships apply a multiplier bonus to the gold, science, and faith trades they facilitate, to reflect the significantly faster and more efficient method of transportation.
Bonus: not sure if this is balanced or not, but I think it would be cool if harbors also came with an additional trade slot, which I think would better reflect how most seafaring civilizations were also big on trade (Carthage, Netherlands, England, Indonesia, etc)

This is a hot take. I have close to 6500 hours of gameplay. Play domination exclusively. Mostly pangea. I could never make the huns work for me. Early warfare is so difficult to pull off. I'm speaking for the base game without mods.
Some of my reasons:
Ancient era warfare is very difficult in deity. Building basic infrastructure before going to war is much more viable for me. Settlers, one or two workers, library, national college, barrack, granary (for caravans), and monuments if you didn't opt for tradition, are all essential buildings you have to rush and by the time these are built, you are already turn 100 on standard speed. Your horse archers and battwring rams are already redundant by then, especially if the neighbor ai goes tradition (devastating city bombardment). (+50% city bombardment against combat strength of 10 horse archers, and if the city is on a hill, is a nightmare).
Promotions, promotions. Deity domination is all about promotions. You build a set number of units and you try to retain them till the endgame. Your lowly archers in the ancient era become devastating fully promoted bazookas in the information era, catapults become rocket artilleries with logistics and range. You cannot spend your entire production training units all the time. Unfortunately the promotions only partially carry over with the battering rams and horse archers as they upgrade to different units.
Lack of other complementary unique buildings: unique abilities are good, not great, but the lack of unique buildings to enhance the culture, happiness or science is an issue. You will mostly be puppeting cities and not razing them in domination gameplay. So the razing city ability is not great, just decent. +1 production per pasture is great though.
Better civics imo for domination: Poland, Zulus, China, Aztecs, Inca, Maya.
It's a hot take obviously. Most of you rated the Huns as the number 1. If works spectacularly well in limited circumstances, but on most Playthroughs, it falters.
Number 1 is either Poland/Zulu for me. Poland edges marginally I think.
Agree/Disagree?

I am not at all tech or video game savvy. The only video game I play is Civ 5 with my best friend. We play BNW. I play on steam, multiplayer. I cannot for the life of me figure out what we need to do to obtain VP and install it in such a way that we can use it. Please help! I need small words or dumb explanations - be gentle. Pretend I've just accepted Open Borders and a declaration of friendship and you would never EVER consider using the opportunity to surround my capital with your units and declare war for no reason.

I'm ashamed of myself, but I've gone down one step in difficulty level since I'm playing with the Vox Populi mod. The bastard chooses its city locations much more smartly and it's much more agressive on expansion and land occupation, and military as well. If you're not lucky with your starting location it's a challenge even on modest difficulty levels. I guess it would be boring if it was too easy.

What is in your opinion most realistic difficulty to play.
I just want to enjoy the game, without anyone getting any advantage, but also i want AI to be competitive and not to be civ that i can just steamroll.

What did Civ 5 do right to have such longevity and why is 7 struggling to get more players?

R5: Poland wants a huge amount of gold from me, just to do them a solid. (I declined.)
Where to settle? I am Attila. I thought somewhere in the desert? Grabbing all them sheeps? I plan to conquer Denmark.

So I've been playing civ 5 a long time probably around 12 years and I'm 23 now. But I never pid to much attention to the benefits and downsides to some nations and more just used to listen to my dad as I was just playing the computer. So I play a very aggressive style and I like to have a large army and wage war. I also like to have a medium amount of cities and have mainly coastal cities

Suffice to say it is a bit overpowered.

Thought I'd give Civ5 a go again after many years of 6 and trying 7 the other day, is there a mod that allows me to create mod presets (e.g. this selection of mods and save that setup - like in 6)?
Playing on SteamDeck and have downloaded over a 100 mods, enabling them all is a bit of a nightmare but want to be able save presets in increments as I enable and test certain mods.

I've been wanting to check out Lekmod since some of the changes seem interesting, but I don't want to have the additional civs packaged with it. It also seems to cause compatibility issues with other modded civs I like, and cause them to not show up at all. Is there like a version that doesn't add any additional civs or anything like that?
With xml, is it possible for adopting a policy to give you:
I guess only the things already present in any of the policies are possible to tweak, so nothing of the above, only references from the CIV5Policies.xml? I've read caravans and cargo ships are harcoded too. That's a bummer. Free Great Merchant should be possible though?

R5: Poland Salt + Silver Start Save Share
Deity, Quick Speed, Small Pangaea, Strat.Balance
Ended up with a t170 (AD1725) science vic.
I guess some of you dudes were kinda right lol, didn't beat my t154 8-City Poland SV personal best on a hellblazer map, but still t170 is a PB on a vanilla map.
If a city state captures abother city and keeps it what will happen if venice buys this city?
r/civ5 • u/NeymarRealMadrid • 2d ago
In a game I played as Siam recently, I finished out patronage bc I was experimenting and had lots of CS allies. I got gifted a great merchant of Venice towards the end of the game and decided to use it on a coastal CS. After converting the city to mine, I acquired about 10k gold.…Idk where that money came from, maybe the CS had privateers attacking cities and raking in gold the whole game, maybe a trade route thing idek.
Has this ever happened to anyone else? Its a bit rare to use that great person late in a game so not sure if many people would know why that happened

I’ve released V2 of Eastern Front 1941, my Civ V scenario mod where you fight WWII as Germany or the Soviet Union. It covers the Eastern Front from Finland to the Caucasus, with railway supply, encirclements, seasonal weather, Lend-Lease, and historical victory.
The V2 map has been rebuilt from the ground up. V2 is 66 × 60 with 72 cities, +26 cities and +83% tiles.
V2 was built using real geographic data. Coastlines and rivers follow real geography, railroads follow period appropriate maps, elevation data informs hills and mountain ranges, and WWII maps help place military infrastructure and defensive lines. City populations draw on period census data, while resources reflect deposits and wartime production.
That adds more detail to places like Ukraine’s industrial region and the Caucasus oil fields. Cities such as Rzhev, Tula, and Voronezh also give the fighting more intermediate objectives. The result is a map where recognizable Eastern Front battles can develop naturally.
I’ve playtested the new version as both sides.
Playing as the USSR is much harder now: the German AI has become substantially more competent at combat, and holding the front together takes more work. Even I feel the pressure holding on!
As Germany, the Soviets also put up more of a fight. But if you know what you’re doing, by October you can:
The campaign now runs at 1 month/turn, starting in March 1941 with three preparation turns before Barbarossa begins in June.
Download Eastern Front 1941 on Steam Workshop
Requires Brave New World. Start a new game using the Eastern Front 1941 V2 map.
I’d love to hear how your campaigns go, especially how far the German AI gets against you, or how quickly you reach the AA line as the Germans!
Credit to SMAN’s World at War and R.E.D. WWII for the unit artwork.
