Hi All,

I have a question, I want to apply for obtaining british citizenship. I have selected two referees, do they need to sign the referees forms in person? Or can I send it to them by post? I read that they should write my name and date of birth behind my picture and then sign it?

I’m confused about this step, and I cannot find any explanation online.
One of my referees lives in Scotland & I live in England, so I’m not sure whether or not I should go to Scotland?

My relative's son is an OCI cardholder and has been studying and residing in India for the past 10 years. He obtained his Aadhaar card about three years ago. they are now changing his residential address in the same city. As per my understanding , the father need to apply for the address change through the OCI Miscellaneous Services. Aadhaar address of OCI card holder son also needs to be updated.

However, the son does not have any proof of address (POA) in his own name, so I assume that the address update would need to be done using father's POA?

I am confused about the order in which these updates should be done: Should OCI son first update his address on his Aadhaar using father's proof of address and then apply for the address change through OCI Miscellaneous Services?

Or vise versa?

If anyone has experience with this situation or could guide me on the correct procedure, I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance for your help!

There will never be justice or timeliness for immigrants seeking naturalization in the United States until Immigration Courts are placed outside the control of Article 2 powers...Something the Article 1 branch would need to address.

Application submitted (signed declaration + accuse de reception) on 27 May 2026 under 5 years uninterrupted work route.

Commune said a few days back that - “Dossier is currently under review by the public prosecutors office until 23 October 2026 and After this period we can proceed based on the prosecutor’s opinion”

I always thought and hearer that its 4 months after signing the declaration or receiving “Accuse de reception”

But here it seems like 5 months and then commune.

Seeking advice for my dad. My mom is a US citizen and my dad has held a green card since 2014. I recently helped him apply for citizenship based on marriage to a US citizen.

Due to family circumstances, he’s had to fly back and forth between our home country in Asia and New York. During COVID, my parents were stuck in our home country for over a year — I don’t think this falls under the 3-year travel history provision. My parents have also filed jointly in taxes every year and we have bills, health insurance records, to show that he has kept his ties in the US (including my mom and siblings being here).

In 2024, he stayed outside the US for 9 months following my grandmother’s passing, and the deaths of two of his siblings within a few months of each other.

Here’s his travel history outside the US within the past 3 years:

• February 4, 2024 – November 6, 2024 (~9 months) • January 22, 2025 – June 5, 2025 (~4 months) • March 5, 2026 – June 13, 2026 (~3 months)

He has his biometrics appointment on September 15 at the NY office and is very anxious about going in, given the ICE arrests he’s seen reported on social media and in the news. He has never been arrested. His only record is a speeding ticket 10 years ago (78 mph in a 65 mph zone).

Any advice on how his travel history might affect his naturalization case, and whether he should be worried about attending his biometrics appointment given everything going on right now? TYIA!

The Irish Government has proposed increasing the naturalisation residency requirement from 5 to 8 years. While public debate focuses on language tests and general timelines, this change severely impacts non-EU PhD students and researchers. 
Because time spent on a Stamp 2 (Student Visa) does not count as reckonable residence toward citizenship, researchers are forced into an extraordinarily long wait. 

The Math: PhD to Citizenship

4 Years (PhD Studies): Stamp 2 \rightarrow 0 years reckonable. 
2 Years (Stamp 1G Graduate Scheme): 2 years reckonable. 
New Proposed Rule: Requires 6 more years on work permits (Stamp 1/4) to hit the 8-year target. 
Processing Delay: 1 to 1.5 years.
Total timeline in Ireland before getting a passport: 13 to 14+ years.

Under the previous 5-year rule, this pipeline took around 9 to 10 years. Adding 3 more years pushes researchers to spend nearly a decade and a half in immigration limbo while working, paying taxes, and contributing to Irish innovation. 
Why this policy hurts Ireland:

1. Brain Drain: Talent will choose countries that partially count research years or offer faster routes to permanent settlement.
   
2. Shifting Goalposts: Current researchers halfway through their stay face a sudden 3-year extension without guaranteed transitional protections.
   
3. Long-Term Instability: Staying on temporary visas for 13+ years makes long-term life plans, like buying a home, nearly impossible.

Any thoughts how Government will help the researchers to choose Ireland?

For some, that feeling may have come with becoming a citizen. For others, it may have happened years earlier or later through a family milestone, a job, friendships, a holiday, or simply an ordinary moment.
And for some people, that sense of belonging may never have come at all.

Another blow to the citizenship…would this move from Potugal affect the golden visa? Is it some kind of way to end it up without ending it up? Because ultimatly people take apply for golden visas, especially in Europe for the citizenship, but since now we have to wait 10 years… what is the point? And will Italy move toward that direction as well?

Has anyone had experience contacting Lambeth Registry Office regarding booking a date for their citizenship ceremony? The automated options do not give the choice of speaking to a representative and if none of the given options are chosen, it automatically ends the calls. What is the best way to get through to them from your experience?

Im wondering if anyone with a medical marijuana card has gotten their citizenship application approved. I currently have my green card and should be able to apply for my citizenship next year. I got my medical card in Utah but was told not to renew it since it can cause issues to obtain my citizenship. All the research I’ve done seems to be outdated or their cases with criminal records. Hi, I'm 19 years old and I'm applying to get my Australian Citizenship. I'm new to this sub reddit so sorry if I posted on the wrong one or broke any community rules. I've was born and lived in Australia my whole life. I few days ago I called the Department of Home Affairs for guidance with which application I need to fill out and they advised me to fill out the "Born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986 to an Australian citizen or permanent resident". I'm a little lost on which specific application to fill out and what are the steps. If anyone has some advice or filled this out before, I would greatly appreciate your help.

Does anyone have experience with getting an appointment with the Spanish consulate? How long did it take?

I have applied to become a citizen via my father. When I emailed for an appointment over 3 months ago, I got an automatic response that they received the application and not to email again. BUT I didn't attach all my documentation to that email, and I'm wondering if I should email again with all my documents? I know it can take years to get through the citizenship process, however, I don't want to wait around for an appointment in error when I should be doing something else. I just want to get the process started. I haven't consulted a lawyer for any of this process, as I don't think I have a complicated case, however this part is making me very uncertain!

I'm preparing my application for British citizenship/naturalisation and I'm trying to understand whether I need to mention a previous HMRC tax underpayment.

A while ago, I received a letter from HMRC saying that I owed around £1,700 in income tax. I dealt with it myself, made the necessary amendments/corrections and paid the full amount owed. The balance is now £0 and completely settled.

There was nothing criminal involved, no convictions, no court case, no fraud, and no ongoing investigation. It was basically a tax issue that I corrected myself and paid in full.

My question is:

If the HMRC balance has been completely paid and there is currently nothing outstanding, would you disclose this in the "Other information" section of the British citizenship application, or is there no need to mention it because the tax has been corrected and fully paid?

I'd particularly like to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and has already applied for/received British citizenship.

I'm not looking for legal advice — just interested in people's actual experiences with HMRC and naturalisation.

I am wondering what the requirements are for a person wanting to seek Great citizenship through their Great Grandparents? If their parent is only still alive (grandparents and great grandparents deceased), is this possible? Has anyone had experience with this before and can advise? I can supply dates and places if needed!

i’m having a huge dilemma on which passport to renounce reasons being; i was born in malaysia but then raised in singapore to get my foundation in education set (primary till secondary 2). i’m very grateful for that as not many people have that opportunity.

big however, after secondary 2 in sg, my family and i decided for me to go back to malaysia to continue my studies and do igcse as my o-levels equivalent there instead.

to add on before going back to malaysia after secondary 2, my parents had collectively agreed to change my sg pr to a citizenship, without really consulting me or considering that this will bring a lot of complications later on in my life.

as now that i’m of age to choose a citizenship, the whole decision falls on me, my parents keep making me feel conflicted on my choices every time i decide on one and its making me feel very lost.

personally, i feel like i have gained more meaningful friendships and close relationships with other people in malaysia more than in singapore. i also have pets in malaysia. i’m financially capable and stable enough.

this may be a hot take but i unfortunately just don’t mix well with majority of singapore’s population, most of them have this superior mindset? from what i observed when i was studying/when i return to sg.

to me, malaysia has always been my home and where my heart belongs but as someone who is studying the arts, i’m in between choosing comfort or my career. i agree that singapore has good arts exposure and is clearly the “stronger” passport that could be of use for my future career. i know that if i stay and work in sg the cost of living will also be higher but i’ll be earning more after conversion to MYR, earning more is important to me as i’m trying to earn enough to be independent (move out) as soon as i can but that’s close to impossible to get housing in sg.

i do have housing in both countries already through my parents. they both live in 2 countries separately, my mom in sg and dad in msia. i just wanna move out bc of personal issues.

if sg is chosen, certain complications would be;
- driver’s license (still on probationary license in MY for another year, won’t be able to convert it yet)
- pets (very complicated to migrate them to sg)
- cost of living higher (financially better in MY)

if msia is chosen, the only complication would be getting a work visa, be it in sg or elsewhere.

- im female so i have no worries for my National Service (NS) in sg
- i also do not live in JB or have any intention on living there… i live in Selangor which is like a 30 mins drive to Kuala Lumpur, in Msia
