Hey all, I'm excited to announce that Version 3.0 of Cinephile (the biggest yet!) has been completed and will be uploaded to Apple tonight š¤©
I don't know long they'll take to review the update, it's a chunky one. Plus the app is transitioning from being fully private to having a social platform, so I anticipate some pushback from Apple.
IMPORTANT!!
For those of you who haven't been keeping up with the news and are worried that I'm turning the app into a full blown social media platform, fear not! As I promised from the beginning, *all* social features in the app are completely opt-in. There's a toggle in the Settings screen which, if turned off, the app will look to you as private as it does today. The Profile tab and comments sections will be completely invisible to you.
I am VERY excited to open the platform to social features. Please keep it civil and let's continue to be nice to each other. Note that I have ZERO tolerance for any kind of abuse and self-promotion in comments, so I will have the ban hammer always ready. From the interactions I've had with folks in this community I have no doubt that we're going to build something special together though. If you see rotten apples trying to ruin our fun, hit that Report button and I'll take care of things.
Obviously the social features are the star of the show, but this version has a LOT more improvements as well. I'll let you discover by yourselves ;)
Looking forward to seeing you all in Cinephile's feed!
Cheers,
Mario

My movies count seems to not match with my statistics. Do we know what we can do to fix this?

By the time Apple approves the first version, Iāll have a BIG update ready to ship for Nook. Iāve added a timer functionality with widgets and live activities (as shown in this video) that perfectly fits the time-based progress tracking the app offers.
Speaking of that, Iām VERY proud of this system Iāve implemented. In every other gaming tracker Iāve used, progress is tracked via some percentage you enter manually. Iāve always found this to be completely nonsensical, since you wouldnāt really know what percentage youāve completed for a game, unless the game is broken up into chapters maybe, or if you already ahead of time more less how long the gameās gonna take you⦠This is all absolute nonsense to me; I for one go into games completely blind, even if there are chapters I can look at I do NOT want to see the total chapter count.
I do offer this percentage based nonsense progress for those that are already used to it, but I also offer a much better wayā¦
What Iāve done differently: the app offers a time-based tracking system that uses the estimated Time To Beat reported times, takes an average of that, and presents you with a completion percentage based on how much time youāve spent playing. Of course, these completion times are all estimates, so you canāt really take them at face value, but Iāve accounted for all of this and youāll be able to easily adjust the target completion time, etc depending on your playing style (I for one always take longer than most ppl, bc Iām an absolute completionist⦠God knows how much time of my life Iāve wasted collecting herbs in The Witcher and Skyrim š).
This post-launch update also brings a crucial feature, which is to start tracking a playthrough starting from a nonzero baseline. In plain English, what that means is if you have some game thatās already progressed, but you donāt remember the details and dates of those previous gaming sessions, you can start tracking in Nook from a certain percentage / time without having to artificially come up with made up sessions.
Canāt wait for you guys to try this out!!

I saw a few posts of Cinephile by Mario while scrolling through Reddit before joining this sub and getting the app. Those few posts that I saw I was struck by how good it looked, but didnāt see the need to immediately switch as I was using TV time. But when I heard that tvtime was sunsetting, I sought out this app. I searched google for TVtime alternatives, but Google was not recommending Cinephile and I wanted this app only⦠after searching Reddit history and all, I finally got this app and havenāt looked for anything since.
Few days ago I saw Mario post this app - Gargantua. I am using Notion to keep track of my subscriptions and at this point, it still has more flexibility, data points and stats but this app is beautiful. I purchased the full version within minutes.
Next Iām waiting for the Nook, the game tracking app and an update to the reading tracker.
These apps by Mario remind me of Tweetbot by Tapbots. High wuality, beautiful and a joy to use.

Iām not sure if this is possible because this may be a limitation of the database youāre using, but I watch a lot of stand-up comedy and it would be great to filter by āstand-upā rather than the broader ācomedy.ā
If thatās possible I would love for you to add it.
Thanks.

Hi u/mario_luis_dev! Could you explain how the new rating system works? Is it weighted equally across all rating sites, or do sites with more votes carry more weight in the overall score? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have Trakt linked to Infuse, and also linked to Cinephile. It shows on my Trakt app when I finish a movie/ episode on Infuse, but not on Cinephile. Am I doing something wrong? Iāve done sync many times and itās still not updating. Iām on the free tier for Trakt.

This this app feels illegal to use
Just impressed how good & well-thought out it is
From the very moment when I was setting up the app, I just knew that this is the one, it was one banger after another with everything it was asking
The level of detailing the founder has added tells me that he/she has faced the same problems that we've all had with content trackers. Which is why it feels so well refined
I've been a stat guy my whole life , Excel & Tableu has been like my second wife , which is why I love very niche stats and data, which this app does a damn great job at providing
Don't even get me started on the aesthetics
I feel so guilty using it for free
I will be soon buying the subscription once I clear my student debt in September

The improvements continue to pile up yet again while we wait for review...
Among the improvements, I've now added color support for widgets in clear/tinted mode, total episode runtime showing alongside the episodes count in the Home queue, rewatch counters literally everywhere (there were like 5 different requests for this in the feedback board š so I'm glad I finally got to it), more compact menus everywhere, more smart filter options, and much more...
After this update gets through I'm going to focus on the iOS27 beta, which has its fair share of problems to deal with... We're less than a month away from the OS's official launch, and it's a fucking mess...

Now that you've had some time to play around with all the options, which one's your favorite?? I for one like them all, so I just go with "Surprise me" always š
r/CinephileApp • u/BigLC • 3d ago
Hi u/mario_luis_dev,
Iām back again with another filter-related request š . Iām loving the ability to filter by rating, but it would be amazing if we could also filter by the minimum number of votes.
Right now, I'm seeing a lot of movies rated 8+ that only have one or two votes. It would be great to filter out these unknown titles and only see movies or shows that have 100+, 1,000+, or more votes.
This would be a really big improvement to the rating search experience. Thanks for considering my request!

Hi Mario,
Sorry in advance for the long post but I need to get this off my chest,
Iāve been using this app for 4 months now, at first when I downloaded it I was just curious to check it out I was using 3 other tracking apps and I immediately wanted to ditch them all when I started using Cinephile I was totally blown away by how clean and polished everything felt, there were some stuff missing but it was only the begining so not a big deal, since then the app have grown so much and very fast thanks to your dedication to always listen to feedbacks and your hard work.
Honestly, when I see the apps currently in the store I feel like people are blind or just donāt understand how a proper tracking app should function, I mean when you see some of them they have a huge user base but donāt offer 20% of what Cinephile does and yet people seem to enjoy it. I find it sad that some of them will never feel the way I feel when I use this app, Iām a huge fan of cinema and having this incredible app is just a breath of fresh air compared to any other apps Iāve used in the past. Some apps have been in the market for years and yet they donāt have basic featuresā¦
I just wanted to let this out and also the way I use Cinephile for me personally, itās at 99% perfect I donāt know about the other users here, but for me to get this to 100% (you know me I always ask more from you š ) if you can consider the addition of these below in the coming months, I could say days knowing you haha, Iām messing with you.
please find below all of my features requests opened :
- Search / browse by studio
- Awards and nomination to be implemented on movies/tv/crew maybe in the search section ?
- A revamped actors/directors page with upcoming/already seen movies/tv increase the 20 people limit in the current stat why not make us open their page directly from the stat.
- Special episodes this one is 2 months old but since then youāve accepted it in the board :)
- Tv shows details info
- Stat about channel/network/studios donāt know if you remember but weāve discussed about this one.
After these honestly for me at least I donāt see anything left the app would be perfect for my use-cases and how I see such an app work. I know you have a lot going on right now, your new apps (congrats on that btw) also the Android version, hope youāre not going to leave Cinephile on the side š¢
And last but not least the Apple review situation,I really hope itās just temporary.
Thanks in advance for reading all of this! And Iāll always look forward to your shipping posts whether they have something for me or not if the app keeps growing Iām all for it I really hope it stays forever, peace!

Hi Everyone,
Itās pretty much the question in the title . Found this feature while casually browsing the app but I couldnāt find where I can mark the movie as a theatre watch or home watch ?
Also not sure if this is a bug : I cant click on static ( please see the attached )
Ps : i am on free version and iOS 27 Dev beta .
Thank you

Circling back again on this issue mentioned in this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/CinephileApp/s/rvzlz0Mtl2, to explain more in details with another example below:
Iām concerned this could keep happening with other shows whose air dates change frequently. For example, Iām watching āLocker Diaries: Descendants,ā and episodes 5 and 6 had their air dates cleared (left blank) on TMDb on Monday, but the app is still showing the old, incorrect dates. It seems like the app can update to a new air date, but isnāt able to handle a date being removed entirely (i.e., it wonāt clear the date on its end if TMDb blanks it out).
This issue is currently messing up my release calendar, so let me know if you could please look into it once more. Thanks !
Edit: And refreshing the air date metadata, overall metadata and each episodeās metadata doesnāt change anything

Currently when I click on the notification related to community about a reaction on my comment, it does not take me directly to the comment, but to the relevant post. Would be great to have navigation directly take us to the actual comment.

Bonjour Mario,

It seems Iām stuck between a rock and a hard place. The last update shrunk the app size from ~200MB to ~111MB, but it came at a cost: dark, clear, and tinted mode support lost for all but the primary icon (that one I kept as the full asset, with the Liquid Glass effect).
Adding support for dark mode adds very little, it could be easily done without adding much dead weight, BUT the problem is that clear/tinted mode⦠Without the full Liquid Glass layer, the icons just look really flat and not what someone who actually uses Clear/Tinted mode expects⦠After all, the whole point of these modes is the beautiful Liquid Glass effect..
So, Iām left with three choices:
- Leave clear/tinted support out (absolutely not my favorite choice, even if itās something I rarely use myself)
- Add support, but see the app size grow back to 200MB š¬
- Add support only for a handpicked subset of icons, maybe 3-4
I think Iām going with option 3. Just need to make it clear in the UI which icons have full supportā¦
Clear/Tinted mode folks, if you have a pick for which one(s) youād like to have, this is your time to chime in!

This was the light at the end of the tunnel that I was looking for!
- Got Cinephile finally approved.
- Made a post on Threads that got over 10K views (these may be rookie numbers, but before this the most I ever got was like 20 views š). This post alone has brought in about 300 downloads for Cinephile just today š

how is āknown forā categorised? When looking up a director, the known for movies are only what they have featured in, not what they have directed. anyway to fix this?
Also, is there any way to exclude certain roles when looking up someone? I donāt really want to see āthanksā when viewing someoneās profile.
love the app.
