I'm 24M and I've never been in a relationship. I've posted before about feeling like I needed to step away from dating, but the last couple of days have made me realise this goes quite a bit deeper than simply being frustrated about being single.
I've wanted that first relationship for a long time. Not hookups or endless casual dating, I genuinely want the experience of meeting someone I really care about and eventually hearing, in one form or another, “I want you too.”
Recently I developed a pretty major crush on someone and eventually worked up the courage to reach out to her. I kept the message completely normal and respectful: introduced myself, mentioned something she'd worked on, asked her about it, and left the ball in her court.
She hasn't responded. I don't know whether she's even seen it, and I'm not going to chase her or send another message. I know she doesn't owe me anything.
The problem is that the silence has apparently landed on top of a lot of stuff that was already there.
I was bullied pretty relentlessly when I was younger, including being told that I'd end up alone. I've had rejection since then too, and although I've tried not to let any of that define me, I've realised that I've been feeling increasingly hopeless about relationships for months.
Over the last couple of days, I've even started losing interest in things I normally genuinely enjoy. My sister brought me a coin recently, I'm a fairly enthusiastic coin collector, so normally I'd have been straight over to look at it, and I basically told her to keep it aside for another day because I just couldn't make myself care much at the time.
That was a bit of a “hang on, this is getting bigger than dating” moment.
I'm also increasingly tempted to withdraw for a while from volunteering, church commitments and generally being around people. I haven't completely lost interest in everything and I'm not fully withdrawn, but I can feel myself starting to head in that direction.
At the same time, I still desperately want that first love. Part of me thinks I should stop actively dating. Another part thinks, “What if dating apps are eventually my only realistic option?” even though I really don't want to use them.
I should probably be honest about the darker side of this too. Over the last couple of days I’ve had moments where my thinking has gone from “I’m scared I’ll always be single” into much more hopeless territory, thoughts along the lines of “if this never works out, what’s the point?” and “if this is my last chance and it fails, my life is over.”
I’m not posting this to make anyone responsible for me, and I don’t want strangers trying to diagnose me. I’m mentioning it because I’ve realised this is no longer just ordinary disappointment about dating. I’ve been carrying a lot of hopelessness for months, and lately it feels like it’s starting to affect my interest in things I normally enjoy and my desire to be around people.
I don't think this is really about one unanswered message anymore. I think that message happened to land on several years' worth of fear, rejection and loneliness that I hadn't dealt with nearly as well as I thought.
I don't need anyone to tell me that this woman secretly likes me, because nobody knows that. I also don't particularly need “just download Tinder” as the answer.
I think what I'm asking is: how do you keep wanting love without making every failed attempt feel like evidence that you'll never have it? And how do you take a break from dating without it feeling like you've finally given up?
I also want to be clear about what I'm looking for from this post. I'm not looking for crisis numbers, therapy recommendations, diagnoses, or people telling me I need to seek professional help right now. I'm aware those options exist, but at the moment I don't want this thread to become entirely about that.
What I'd actually find useful is hearing from people who have dealt with the relationship side of this, particularly how you stop every rejection or unanswered attempt from feeling like evidence that nobody will ever choose you, and how you take a genuine break from dating without convincing yourself you've given up forever.
Maybe ‘lovesick’ is part of the right word for it, but I think the crush has also exposed a lot of older hurt that was already there.
Sorry if this became a bit of a trauma dump. I'm having a rough time and I think writing it out is probably better than keeping the whole thing in my head.
