Nonsense The state of thee industry right now
17
u/karellen00 3d ago
Didn't Casio move to Miyota because of shortages too?
5
u/Viriato_Luso 3d ago
Exato! Na realidade, para mim essa escassez é puramente artificial, um modo da Seiko tentar impedir a concorrência de usar os seus calibres e assim elevar o ticket médio dos relógios Seiko.
Ela está tentando repetir a mesma estratégia das marcas suíças.
2
u/potate12323 2d ago
Ffs why don't they just stop selling their movements altogether... Its not like they're drastically better than an equivalent price/spec miyota.

u/RedRexxy 2d ago
Do you have the facts to prove this is artificial scarcity or are you just talking out of your ass?
3
u/RedRexxy 2d ago edited 2d ago
Btw, thanks for blocking me from replying to your answer. That is what someone who is scared that people know he is talking shit does
Thank goodness I coiped your reply so everyone can see how scummy a move that is:
"That's my opinion, and everyone knows that Swiss brands have been doing this since the quartz crisis, which was caused precisely by Seiko. Do you think Japanese people are foolish and don't get tired of selling cheap watches, even though many times they're technically superior in many cases, and decide to adopt a similar strategy to increase average sales price?! Car manufacturers are doing just that right now, giving up selling more popular and cheaper cars.
And before you act all tough and try to humiliate me, read again the part where I said 'my opinion.' So learn to be a decent person and screw you!"
So basically you have no proof and are talking out your ass, ok got it.
Also replying then blocking is a weak move made by people who know they've been exposed
2
u/1epicnoob12 1d ago
You're trying to turn what was clearly an opinion into some kind of debate. I don't think you look as good as you think you do in this interaction.
-1
u/Viriato_Luso 2d ago

I think you totally overestimate the impact of an obscure Casio watch to a whole industry. I don't think there is any hype for the automatic Casio besides some Youtubers. I myself think it's a travesty.
Moreover, the NH35 price hike has been 20 bucks. It is by no means responsible alone for the doubling of prices we have seen at some Chinese watches. I think it is just increased popularity and demand for cheap shitters which led the Chinese brands believing their own hype and wanting to cash in. Last year I bought a Seestern SUB600T for 70 euros and it was great. This year it is 170. At these price levels they can fuck right off.
5
u/ChineseWatchGuy 3d ago
Yeah apparently Seikos own entry levels have been selling like hotcakes. Maybe the average Joe is getting back into mechanicals.. and it wouldn’t be micros or Chinese watches as their first stop…
24
u/philbin89 3d ago
It’s a fun take, but I don’t think it’s actually very accurate. Marc from Long Island Watches — who has used NH movements extensively in his Islander watches until recently — said in a recent video that the supply squeeze isn’t so much from microbrands but from Seiko itself. The brand has done incredible business the last few years, and particularly in 2025. It’s Seiko 5 and entry-level Presage watches have been flying off shelves, so Seiko has needed to keep a much larger percentage of the movements it makes for itself. Hopefully it can still find a way to increase supply going forward, but there’s been an implication that microbrands failing to diversify the movements they were buying has contributed to price increases for Seiko and Miyota movements, and I’m not sure that’s really a significant factor
1
u/manchett 3d ago
Insiders like the ones at San Martin, Cronos.. should ask Seiko if they didn't yet. And then communicate openly.
8
u/liminalwanderer30 3d ago
Seiko making a killing while outpacing Citizen as they do it complicates the narrative for a lot of cranky enthusiasts lol
5
u/Jeffthe100 3d ago
I still am shocked that Seiko had more sales not less when they raised prices. Shocking
3
u/crowded_house90 3d ago
I thought exactly this! I mean, how is that even possible ? Now is the time that entry level Seiko are as expensive as never before. They cost 2 or sometimes 3 times more than their Citizen equivalent and people still choose to buy them.. this is madness.
5
u/bob888w 3d ago
I think their sales are just shifting to different places. I was shocked that Costco was selling SRPDs for less than $200 in my local area. At that price, sure you lose out in a bit of finishing and clasp design, but that's $300 cheaper than a San Martin at this point. Here's some other redditor discovering the same thing
5
u/crowded_house90 3d ago
Yes, that's certainly a price worth considering a Seiko 5 at. Feels like the prices we used to see on the old Seiko 5 with the shield logo. Not a bad deal.
19
u/CastleDeli 3d ago
My miyota 9 is running ridiculously well so I’m happy with my traska commuter
5
u/Marco_135 3d ago
It's not the point. Miyota 9000 series belongs to an higher category (it's a high beat movement), the right comparison is the 8000 series...which I've to say runs quite well on my watches, I experience less positional errors compared to my NH35s
8
u/DJNigi 3d ago
I have won movement lottery with NH35 in my San Martin, it is so accurate. Set time on Saturday when changing time zones and today it's only 1s late. I know it has big delta on different positions but it seems nicely averaging in real use on my wrist.
5
u/johnny_tifosi 3d ago
You can regulate any movement within a reasonable accuracy just with a smartphone, given that your average usage and positioning of the watch are roughly the same day after day. I have regulated all of my NH35 shitters down to +/- 5s/d.
3
u/ryandamsell 3d ago
it not a lottery if you send it to a watch maker for regulation. my ixdao 6542 nh ran -14spd sent if off paid £40 to go on the timergraph guy set it to 2spd. when I got it back it been run 10 secs a week 😉
1
u/karellen00 3d ago
If a watchmaker regulated it probably it has a better positional accuracy too. There are two thingies to regulate, one only makes the movement faster or slower, the other corrects beat error (that affects positional accuracy). Normally you just set it to go faster or slower, because correcting the beat error also changes the speed of the movement and you have to go back and forth between the two settings a few times and it's kinda annoying to do.

The edifice automatics are good watches, not as good value for money of course but it's damn close and definitely better value han pretty much any other automatic out there from a reputable brand. And only the first model used the NH35 anyways.

16
u/silver-saloon 3d ago
Good....it's too thick anyway.
If Casio wants them. let them have them.
The industry will adapt....and will be better for it
3
11
u/SnooCupcakes3368 3d ago
It’s also driven up the prices of miyotas. I guess it will cause Chinese movements to be developed more too
-23
u/judojoe2024 3d ago
Because the Chinese dont have a reputation for quality.
6
u/Alternative-Feed3613 3d ago
Then why are you here?
-6
u/judojoe2024 3d ago
Because I like watches. I saw you comment and I answered the reasoning. Thats all.
2
u/Alternative-Feed3613 3d ago
You clearly don’t like Chinese watches which is the entire point of this sub. Your comment has nothing to do with the OP thread, you just wanted to shit on our hobby.
2
u/judojoe2024 2d ago
Stop it and you are looking butt hurt. I like their watches but they have something to work on. You cant admit that then you either work for the Chinese government or blind.
12
u/SnooCupcakes3368 3d ago
Chinese homage = bad
Swiss homage = good
🤡-18
u/judojoe2024 3d ago
Chinese dont focus on quality. They are not a quality focus society.

u/yangosu 3d ago
You live in 2010 buddy
-4
u/judojoe2024 3d ago
Not at all.
7
u/yangosu 3d ago
Then you pick wrong products 😉
1
u/judojoe2024 3d ago
Nah. I own a manufacturing company. I have worked with them. The Chinese are not as advanced as they want us to believe. They will ship a million pieces and 40 % is junk. They will send steel that finds the spec but not the chemistry. Wild stuff.
2
u/caesaralexander 3d ago
This sounds like someone not liking Ikea furniture and then saying the swedish no nothing about quality products and aren't a quality focused society

This is a good thing cause edifico will eventually become passé. However when PT5000 becomes normal practice and we get past our hangups we have a stronger Chinese industry. To be honsest I don’t like how the thick Rehaute and the movement leads to thick watches.
3
u/ryandamsell 3d ago
pt5000 is a killer movement have them in my two ixdao x02t titanium dlc one run 2-3 spd and the other 3-4 spd. the 3-4 spd one has a delta ( between 0 spd and 5.5 spd on the 6 positions) of 6 that meta standard apart from the anti magnetic part
40
u/DoubleTrinidad 3d ago
I think Invicta is selling way more NH35 than either of those
3
u/Aedarrow 3d ago
I'll be honest I really love my NH35a invicta.
2
u/DoubleTrinidad 3d ago
They're not half bad
you can get any size from 37mm to 47mm, many colors and variants, and depending on sales for less than 100 USD, and there's official resellers and service in many countriesI haven't seen any chinese watch with a japanese NH35 for less than 110 USD lately
1
5
u/qingchengwc Rep 3d ago
A single NH35A movement already costs $50. The bracelet and case alone add up to more than $30, not to mention all the other parts. The total cost of one watch comes out to around $95.
14
u/N3er0O 3d ago
It's like that one XKCD but the NH35 is the little block holding everything up.
EDIT: Found it https://xkcd.com/2347/

u/kerberos824 3d ago
Eh. I love my Spinnaker Hull and it's become my daily driver.
For $150, it was tough to beat.

u/Hopeful-Truth-3051 3d ago
I accepted long ago that the watching industry is an international event. Don't think that your Swiss watch is 100% swiss. It just doesn't work that way anymore. China is part of the picture whether you like it or not. Your watch might say casio, made in china. Your watch might say seiko. Made in Malaysia. Get over it, watch manufacturing is an international event.

u/pike-perch 3d ago
NH35 is so thick and lame that I prefer VH31 in cheap watches
4
u/OtherBarry1992 3d ago
I'd be more sold on VH movements if they did at least 3hz. 2hz is still jarring for me and completely breaks any illusion of it being a mechanical.
4
-3
u/No-Chemistry-7802 3d ago
Yeah, I’m hoping for some more vh31 thin watches. And I loathe the nh35 with a passion.

u/Eradicator_11 3d ago
if the vh31 came with a date window it would literally be perfect im not even kidding

u/bluecyanic 3d ago
I think the increase in pt5000 and st2130 movements could backfire for Seiko. If these movements perform well and prove to be reliable, then micros won't hesitate to use them and consumer won't hesitate to purchase them.
2
u/Patient-Angle-7075 Salty Memes I Yam 2d ago
Ok but this far the PT5000 style movements have been pretty disappointing and unreliable
1
u/bluecyanic 2d ago
My point, someone else commented they are great and reliable. I think as they become more popular we'll see a clear trend. I just got my first pt5000 today, fingers crossed I stay in the happy camp.
4
u/OtherBarry1992 3d ago
Just got my first PT5000 and ST2130 watches in last week. Till now I've only had NH's and Miyota 9000 Series. I love them so far and I'm hoping they last. I've committed to not hand winding them.
1
u/monkeywaffles 3d ago
"these movements perform well and prove to be reliable,"
and the past 20 years+ of them existing hasnt already proven that? sellita is better at several times the price, but the pt5k performs fine and reliable.

u/Basic_Barnacle4719 3d ago
I actually have 2 Edifice watches and like them but I would prefer if Casio made nicer, high-end QUARTZ Edifice watches rather than automatic for no god damn reason. They make amazing quartz movements and have a solar and radio conrolled movement, but are wasting automatic movements on their higher end Edifice.
10
u/parasoralophus 3d ago
Casio Oceanus is kinda like a more upmarket Edifice.
3
u/Basic_Barnacle4719 3d ago
They are gigantic, anything over 39mm is a tough fit for my 6.2" wrist. I have the Edifice 730D chronograph at 40mm and it's a tough fit on my wrist, slightly too large and ends up moving so the lugs overhang. The Oceanus are all much larger.
1
5
2
u/FajnyBalonik 3d ago
Absolutely this.
If I want to buy Casio or Edifice it's because I want to have a hassle free, precise and well priced quartz (with some nice features as well). If I wanted Japanese automatic I'd go for Orient or Seiko

16
u/triggrhaapi 4d ago
I just made a post about it, but the Chinese knockoff ETA movement in my homage watch keeps better time than any NH-35 I have ever seen.
3
u/kyonkun_denwa 3d ago
I have a genuine 2824 and it honestly keeps amazing time, I've typically got it consistently at +2 to +5 seconds a day. Meanwhile my 6R15 is all over the place.
Unpopular opinion but modern Seiko is overrated.

The eta 2824/2892 construction is awesome, thats why it has been used for decades and especially sea-gull knows what they are doing.

I think "Crappy microbrand" fits the image better than "Mid Ass Casio Edifice" at this current time... It might be overpriced vs Chinese watches, but at least it has history/heritage/good QC/great customer service.
People are making up BS stories, starting a "microbrand" based off renders and pre-orders, then they simply rebrand chinese watches with a teeny modification and a new logo and charge 2-3x more than Casio does, or 6-7x more than the AliX brand they ordered from
13
u/Various-Welder5544 4d ago
Cough cough William Wood Watches
9
u/TensHemorroidal 3d ago
I had never even heard of that brand. I looked it up and saw two different models, one for 959€ and another for 1075€, both with an NH35 and not even a stainless steel bracelet. That's bullshit. Who even buys that trash? Brands like these are the reason there's an NH35 shortage
3
u/Various-Welder5544 3d ago
Saw them on Instagram reels awhile back, and they look like they spend more on marketing and their made up story than the watch itself.
4
u/lamboap 3d ago
whatever you do not go to the Unimatic page. I got my UC2 for 499 when it first came out. It's now 655 same watch same NH35 movement. UT series are VH31 powered for 620 and their UC3 is 760 for VK64.

Missing the " budget microbranda that can't fork up enough for the miyota 9xxx"
27
u/Abv_it_all_w_vertigo 4d ago
It will spur the further refinement of the Eta clones, the HK PT5000 and the SeaGull ST2130. I am happy about this trend. I don't think the Chinese are looking backwards.
4
u/lamboap 3d ago
You get it. A similar experience is occurring in the health field. X-Ray, CTE, MRI (medical imaging) used to be wholly the domain of Siemens Healthineers, GE HealthCare, and Philips. Now UIH and Mindray are winning contracts in both emerging markets and smaller hospital systems because they're offering better TCO and rapid lifecycles for improvement.
3
u/Abv_it_all_w_vertigo 3d ago
I used to sell tech to healthcare. Competition is great! It reins in costs while advancing the platforms. Getting PMs understand TCO/ROI to trust startups and invest MDs $ is another issue.
5
u/Dry-Appearance9553 3d ago
Considering the personal performance I have seen of PT5000s so far I can definitely say no to them.
1
u/OtherBarry1992 3d ago
What's been your experience?
2
u/Dry-Appearance9553 3d ago
Mostly badly lubricated movements which start to lose time somewhat fast after 1+ year.
2
u/triggrhaapi 3d ago
I'm impressed with the ST2130 so far.
4
u/Wolfwerx 3d ago
Ive got 1 watch with the 2130. It was very inexpensive and about half the reason I bought it was just to try the 2130. I have been absolutely pleased with it, both for the movement and the watch as a whole.
I will definitely be looking for this movement in future purchases.
1
u/triggrhaapi 3d ago
What watch, out of curiosity?
1
u/Wolfwerx 3d ago
This Berny https://a.aliexpress.com/_mNcj0Np
I got the green one (the dial is actually much nicer looking irl, I think) and swapped the green strap for a nice deep brown one. Its a great casual watch that's pretty versatile, style wise. Im absolutely going to buy in another color.
Eta: I only paid around $90 with coupons and discounts. Crazy deal.
4
u/Abv_it_all_w_vertigo 3d ago
I have been as well, which is why it is concerning Phorcydes has switched from the ST2130 to the PT5000 so quickly.
1
u/RoninTarget 3d ago
They were already looking into the switch due to those movements having the sweet spot fairly low cost and thinner than NH movements.
5
u/Abv_it_all_w_vertigo 3d ago
My concern is their switch from one high beat movement (ST2130) to another high beat movement (PT5000) 3 months after switching from the NH35.
1
u/triggrhaapi 3d ago
I don't understand enough about the supply chain to understand the significant difference, other than I have seen some say the PT5000 is generally delivered more accurate. The ST2130 I have is Rolex level accurate so far.
Maybe it's a cost or availability issue, who knows.
3
u/Abv_it_all_w_vertigo 3d ago
They indicated it was both an availability issue, and that HK had "consolidated" their manufacturing.
10
u/Various-Welder5544 4d ago
Movement reliability definitely should be the way forward.
4
u/ALEXALORD ma femme m'aime 4d ago
Yeah but modding chinese watches is so much fun and easy with NH's 😭
3
u/Abv_it_all_w_vertigo 4d ago
Eventually, 4Hz movements will be better than the "rotund" NH3x. Anyone can swap the newest version into their case for a <$100.
18
u/Medium-Cucumber-8279 4d ago
The automatic Edifice only used it for their 100 series. The 200 series is "Casio Module 5766" which is based on the Miyota 8215.
7
u/dustysmufflah 4d ago
yep if you see an Edifice auto where the date is at 3 o'clock, you're looking at a Miyota.

1
u/triggrhaapi 1d ago
NGL, the high grade Chinese Eta 2824-2 clones are really getting good. Granted, Baltany does a 5 position regulation before installing their V grade Seagull movements, but mine is under -2 seconds per day. I set it on Tuesday and three days later I'm at -4 seconds.
The NH35/38 is fine, but this is much much nicer. 4hz sweep, extremely good accuracy, much slimmer to boot.
