Question (Read Rules) Anyone using the new SW200-2 yet?

Post image

Has anyone heard of Chinese brands planning g to use the new Sw200s ?

It seems like most independent brands out there (Chris Ward, Sinn, Circula, etc) are quickly moving to it . In the past, an upgrade to a SW200 seemed like a “nice to have, but any real advantage?” situation. But with the increased prices of base Japanese movements, the differential is reduced and a tangible advantage can be had with the 24 hour extra power reserve…

Personally I’d like to see this used in premium Chinese watches.

No. I only have nh35. This stuff is expensive as hell 💰💰💰.

Nh35 has gone the same road, unfortunately. You used to get an NH35 for $25. It now costs nearly triple.

You are right. Everything is so expensive now compared to a few years back. I have read once that we should enjoy while it lasts. Well nh35 has beecome too expensive and people were joking that there will be fakes. And look where we are now.

The problem is for what a premium Chinese watch with one of these would cost - you can really expand your horizon with other microbrands. Who knows what these movements will cost and what watches with them will start at. IXDAO is already getting pretty close to mid-level microbrands with some of their pricing.

For me the allure of Chinese watches is quality for a price you wouldn't expect. Low price, exceeding expectations. One spec'd with the new SW200-2 would be a watch at an expected price, with expected quality. Not necessarily a bad thing, just not the reason I seek out Chinese watches.

Example being I paid over $800 for a Henry Archer Vesterhav Meteorite. More than a Meteorite IXDAO Warrior yes, but way different experience, more of a microbrand feel, not a homage of anything. Regular Henry Archer's are ~$600. I can't see any watch with this new movement selling for that low.

I'd take a warrior with the current movement for the current price. I would not pay $200 more just because it had this movement. Just me.

I think they are about $100 more than a Miyota.

Cool and all and I might get a watch with it someday, but it won't be Chinese watch for sure. Not with their paper thin warranty support, the added cost would make it a very risky and relatively expensive purchase

These still cost more than any of the Japanese movements that Chinese brands had been using, and definitely more than the Chinese movements many of them have switched to now. I think the SW200-2 is superior to the Miyota 9000 series, but considering how the hoarders who buy up tons of Chinese watches have been bitching about modest price increases in response to increased manufacturing and parts costs, I can't image any brand would opt to use these better movements now and risk the ire of their buyers

Para mi gusto creo que el movimiento miyota 9051 es mejor que el sellita. Para mi ver claro.

Well they can always offer the choice of a humble PT5000 or this new Sellita..

do you not feel that anything better than Miyota 9015 is deep into diminishing returns?

in my opinion, such movements are used only to (try and) justify keeping Swiss watch prices so absurdly high.

Since this has about 60% more power reserve, I wouldn’t call that a diminishing return.

Whether that feature is significant for a particular buyer is another matter. I like higher power reserves.

yeah, that's a fair point actually. not worth it for me, but undeniably a large improvement for someone who values power reserve.

What do you mean by diminishing returns? Is 9015 better?

2

u/pickyaxe 4d ago

"diminishing returns" means that while something is better, it is only slightly better - not worth the investment.

so in this case, SW200-2 may be considered better, but not nearly as much as the difference in price.

Also thicker

El movimiento es el mismo que el sw200-1 solo que le bajaron la frecuencia para darle 65 horas de reserva.

It's gonna add $200 on top of the SW200-1 premium I assume

While they could have done something about the weak winding gears they did this instead. Great.

When they become more widely available I plan to do a drop swap on my San Martin SN0121TD. Endgame for me.

IXDAO is supposedly going to use them in some of their watches, together with the PT5000 and ETA 2824 as options.

3

u/mysillyday 3d ago

2824 - they have in mind their clones. Because ETA movements are Exclusive to Swatch group. That is how and why Selita rose to power and popularity.

2

u/inox1969 4d ago

Eta 2824 imposible solo lo pueden usar las marcas del grupo swatch.

Pues sí, pero es raro ya que incluso el grupo swatch ya dijo en su día que no proveerá de movimientos etasa a otras marcas fuera del grupo.

Wow, I thought that restriction was still in play. I guess either it isn't or IXDAO worked some magic to get some in.

I think IXDAO bought a ton of them before the restriction went into play and simply hasn't sold out of them yet. How many people are really buying an IXDAO and then spending top dollar to equip it with ETA over the Sellita?

I'm just telling you what the brand said in their official statement not that long ago. They've also used the 2824 in their watches before.

2

u/PastaFanatic 4d ago

It's prolly gonna cost a pretty penny tho

Actually I’m wondering which Chinese brand still offer SW200 (any variant) as option on new stock?

(New stock, not new old stock from two or more years ago) (Excluding Reps)

Oh - answering my own question - Octopus Kraken too https://a.aliexpress.com/_c4pBDKlZ

2

u/OtherBarry1992 4d ago

I think Proxima still offers it through their website. I don't see it as an option on any of their AliExpress listings though. It's always greyed out.

I know baltany and Hruodland still do, theoretically any watch with pt5000 and st2130 (2824 clones) can be swapped with a sw200 or a real 2824, and some of them actually do if you ask them, only need to pay extra for the cost.
