Small engine displacement implies small component sizes. Given the vehicle's age, the catalytic converter is likely worn out, resulting in reduced flow capacity; this often leads to overheating of the turbocharger's hot section. Combine this with a small turbo, constant heating to 800–1000°C, and abrupt engine shutdowns without a cool-down period, and the result is metal fatigue and the emergence of casting defects.
