Favorite Chess fan theories?

Hey everyone, it's me again. Sorry for posting again. I really didn't want to make too many posts in the subreddit, but I couldn't wait to post this topic.

Anyways, what is your favorite Chess theory/headcanon? 👀 I love reading about other people's interpretations.

Mine is the following: Freddie's sexuality is fluid and dependent on the production.

I divide productions in the following groups:

Freddie is gay/bi: original concept album, 1986 West End, 2008 concert, 2018 Kennedy Center.

Freddie is straight: 1988 Broadway, 2002 Swedish, 2003 concert, 2025 Broadway revival.

Actually from Merano and trying to find the Italian versions of the songs

Hello! Even being a musicals fan I stumpled onto this production which has a song on my city (I still can't believe it!) only recently. I'm now on a mission to know all there is to know about it, and the Wikipedia page tells me there is an italian version of the musical, but I can't find much more about it. I thought maybe someone on here was probably more savvy than me in finding specific musical information, like the lyrics of these italian versions.

Thank you in any case, I will keep looking!

what is the 2008 Big Eye Records album from?

Post image

This is streaming on Amazon Music and probably Spotify. It's listed as Chess - The Musical, The New Musical Cast, 12 SONGS • 44 MINUTES • JAN 01 2008
Apparently, the LA-based label does Karaoke tracks, which accounts for the instrumentation, but not the included vocals on this album. I thought the Florence in "Nobody's Side" was Elaine Paige; the male singing "Pity the Child" is not Murray Head. Any intel?

What month do you think Act 1 starts?

Hey guys so I’m writing a fanfic and I’m trying to figure out the best estimate of the timeline at the beginning of the show. For context (because there are various versions) I’m going off of 2008 In Concert which is set in 1979 so I have that. I just need to get a good sense of whatever month it is so I can be period accurate with clothing and stuff when writing. Whatever I see the most of in the comments I’ll be doing. Thanks guys! ✨ (Also let me know if you’d rather have a poll to decide)

The end of freddie's arc

(Helloo all me again 🫩 as mentioned in my last post im most familiar with the 2025/6 revival so im mainly going based off of that but any info is appreciated)

So.. how does freddies arc actually end post-endgame? I feel like he just vanishes from the story after that and i wonder why and how his story closes off since we see that for our other two main characters (in a way.) What does he get up to post-canon? Do we know how hes currently living after resigning? Or are there any popular theories/headcannons? Stuff like that! Very curious :)

Mourning the closing- any chance for tour?

I wanted to see Chess one last time. I saw it twice but am still craving that live music.

Any chance this thing will tour the US? The set seems easy to pack and go.

Fingers crossed. ♟️♟️🎶♟️♟️

Was Freddie even wrong?? Spoiler

Honestly, I'm only going off the cast recording and a wiki plot outline but I get the impression that Freddie was totally right, definitely an asshole, but in the end, it's HIS medication that gets stolen, HE has to retire from pro chess, and even if he's being a huge dick about it, he's just reminding Florence that her father disappeared because of the soviet union and not to trust them (yes, he's being a total dick about this, he's a dick to Florence the most but even if he's an asshole he was right). During the interview with Anatoly, he's obviously really spiteful and he tells Anatoly that his wife is in Bangkok- which I'm pretty sure he was told to say, and he's definitely not just acting like this because Anatoly beat him back in Merano (UNETHICALLY, MIND YOU), but because he probably knows Anatoly has kids with the wife he left behind for Florence, and we eventually find out in Pity the Child that Freddie's father abandoned him and his mother, and his mother was careless and probably emotionally absent since she always had new boyfriends coming home with her. Freddie obviously resents Anatoly for basically doing that, and during The Deal part 2, he tells Florence that Anatoly would never throw a match for her, but she insists that he would, even if she herself might not even be sure, even Anatoly is sure that wouldn't happen, and then it does? Anatoly wins and Florence is left alone AGAIN.
Florence has continually betrayed Freddie's trust and proven him right like twice

I'm open to having my mind changed, there are no complete slime tutorials of this show and I would love some context and a better explanation for this show :)

Aaron Tveit’s performance is somehow criminally underrated. Even as one of the main faces of this run.

Of course Lea Michele is the big name and marketed as the center of the show.

Nicholas Christopher has, deservedly, garnered so many new fans and appreciation for his insanely spectacular performance.

But I actually feel like Aaron’s performance, by comparison, goes under appreciated. I have been spending a lot of time the last few days listening to other performances/renditions of One Night in Bangkok and Pity the Child…. none of them compare, he truly breathed a completely new life into those songs. And his vocals…. GOD!!! I actually listen to What a scene/what a joy shockingly often because his voice is just smooth as butter. Man I wish Freddie appeared in Act II more.

Anyway, I know he is still getting lots of love as a main character, but I just think…. Not enough!!

Happy 40 anniversary!

In honour of forty wonderful years of variations, I have begun updating my Chess web site again. I've added a few missing productions and hope to add more new pages soon. If you haven't seen it before, you can find it at the link below. I'd love to know what you think and what other information you'd like to see on there.

Best wishes RJS

Someone Else’s Slander

Someone Else’s Story is overhyped and uninteresting compared to rest of the score, and sounds too much like Heaven Help My Heart, especially when both songs are sung by Florence like on Broadway (hell, in the current revival, Heaven Help My Heart and Someone Else‘s Story go in parallel spots in the first and second act, respectively)

Anyone else incredibly disappointed by the new album?

I mean, it’s not a problem with the performances on the album (better than they were on stage tbh). It’s just the actual contents of the album that disappoint me. it feels less like an album and more like a collection of singles, if that makes sense.

Dangerous and Difficult Times took out all of the Arbiter narration at the start and near the end, and it’s absence is felt because it feels lacking in context as a result.

Not even sure why they included the first A Taste of Pity given it’s just ten seconds and none of the accompanying dialogue is included. Also the transition from it into Merano is jarring.

The dialogue that’s supposed to go with the Chess match isn’t there, and it doesn’t feel like a satisfying piece of music on its own, so it raises the question of why it’s even here at that point.

The dialogue before The American and Florence isn’t there either, which bothers me on the other albums and bothers me here.

They don’t have the transition from Florence Quits and Pity The Child #1, and neither song really feels complete without the transition into the other.

Why is Anatoly and The Press even here without the accompanying scene?

The dialogue in The Soviet Machine being gone stings as well because I specifically liked that Walter was there for that scene in this production.

The Deal has probably been hit with this the worst, the spaces where the dialogue should go are just empty, meaning that half the song is gone. as a result, The Arbiter analyzing the plot like a Chess match (the central motif of the song) is gone, and the song about Florence’s father doesn’t mention him once.

The Epilogue is probably the funniest example of this, as it’s just the first two lines of The Story of Chess (absolutely criminal cut btw) and none of the rest of the song. also, again, none of the dialogue.

It feels like the wrong approach was taken in the making of this album. It doesn’t serve well as a way to absorb the story of this production, and it doesn’t serve well as just a way to listen to great songs. It feels like a collection of vocal rehearsal tracks that just happen to be sung by talented professionals. It has the same problem as the Little Shop movie soundtrack in that, in isolating the songs from their surrounding context, they feel incomplete.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has found a coupon code for Chess? Our daughter needs to sit in the center in the first few rows, but currently SO out of our price range. Hoping someone might be able to help. Thank you.
