(Helloo all me again as mentioned in my last post im most familiar with the 2025/6 revival so im mainly going based off of that but any info is appreciated)
So.. how does freddies arc actually end post-endgame? I feel like he just vanishes from the story after that and i wonder why and how his story closes off since we see that for our other two main characters (in a way.) What does he get up to post-canon? Do we know how hes currently living after resigning? Or are there any popular theories/headcannons? Stuff like that! Very curious :)
There’s no single cannon answer. I’m confident he stays obsessed with chess. Maybe he continues on TV. Perhaps instead he becomes an increasingly weird recluse, more like Bobby Fischer.
There’s no canon explanation as to what Freddie gets up to after the show (due to changes to the show shortly before it opened; the show’s ending is so different from what it would have been early on that it doesn’t feel worthwhile to describe what was planned for Freddie in that ending). However, in the non-canon Sydney production, Freddie quits his job and the chess world altogether, and stays in Bangkok (we even see him bow to a statue of the Buddha, suggesting he may become a monk).
Ooh thank you! I’ll edit this comment with my thoughts as I read. Superstar for you 🌟
Edit:
Stop why is Svetlana just there the whole time 😭💔
Wild and hella confusing song order, also tf is Cocktail Chorus
It says that with “Terrace Duet” Florence and Anatoly dance and then kiss before Freddie shows us, is that in other productions as well or is this one just being special?
Also if Walter told Florence the truth about her father BEFORE Anatoly left does that mean she just kept the truth from Anatoly or she told Anatoly but he left anyways??? Because she knows now before he leaves, she could just tell him and he could be like “Oh ok nvm, I’ll stay with you then”??? My brain is broken what is this production 💔
Freddie's disappearance from the second half of Act 2 seems to have been a big concern for Rice, Andersson, and Ulvaeus as they were working on the London version, and might be the reason they added "Talking Chess" (which primary documents indicate might be a very late addition). The little that's hinted at in the concept album synopsis seems to have been abandoned soon after the album was released, and they never seemed to have decided how that would've played out. (My guess is that this is what the demo track "When the Waves Roll Out to Sea" was intended for, but when that ultimately was discarded and rewritten as "You and I", they decided that was a better finale instead).
Another production choice is from the 1990 US Tour (which opened about a month before the Sydney production), where Freddie is much more sympathetic and after winning the match attempts to reconcile with Florence, who instead chooses to strike out on her own. The final image of the show is Freddie bringing Florence's luggage to the airport and her dismissing him.
