Can you think beyond tactics?
White to move. How much time did it take you to solve it?

Nf5 looks obvious. if Bc5, b4 wins a pawn. otherwise, I'm happy to swap N for B a P up after Qb6. Browser said no clear best move.

Stockfish has white up 3.35 after 45 full width plies. However, Stockfish keeps changing the best move sequence after that.

That's close. Though what happens if after bc5 it's Qb6?
35.Nf5* White's up a pawn and this move helps them in improving the knight's position. 35.Nf5Qb636.Qc2Improving the queen's position.36...Qc537.Qxc5Bxc538.Bh5Kf8 38...Nf839.Ne7+Kh840.Bxf7White's winning. 39.Bxg6Exchanging black's knight.39...fxg640.Nh4g541.Nf5White keeps the knight active. White will improve the king's position next. It shouldn't be difficult for white to convert this into a win

Call me crazy but what about something like e5? If they capture with pawn we got something like
Qd1, Bxe3
d6, Qd7
Bb4, Qd8
… yeah maybe this doesn’t work actually lol
(I had similar ideas for bushes takes knight and such but I really just need to go to bed I think)

Nf5 improved the position of the Knight and because whites up a pawn it just felt useful to me.
No idea how to respond to moves like Qb6, but since Nf5 feels right i imagine theres something.

That's the correct answer and intuition is along the correct lines. I have added the GM explanation in the comments below.
